Shooter says Mbakwe to visit Memphis this week

It'll be interesting to see if Trevor buys the bill of goods Memphis will almost certainly try to sell him about being able to play right away next year. Should be great entertainment.

Wouldn't the fact that he's even visiting Memphis indicate that the AD there would allow him to play next year? If their AD is willing to sign Mbakwe up, then there's no reason for this continued punishment from Maturi. This trial may not occur for another year.

This doesn't stand to reason. The only thing it means is that Memphis' AD is willing to operate in the gray area Maturi is not. When the trial occurs has no bearing on if he can play or not...it is the fact that it has not been resolved.

Next year??? Won't he have to sit a year because of the transfer? and lose a year of eiligibility? red shirts are used up.... i think he loses eligibility, no?

Don't know about Trevor's eligibility status but he did allude to next Tuesday being free. I recall Maturi mentioning that he would revisit Trevor's eligibility status should the trail date be moved again. Isn't the trial date scheduled now for June 7? Or has that date moves too.

I don't get it. Once Mbakwe announced he was going to "look around" he should've been shown the door. It's ridiculous that he even has the option to return to the U if he is indeed shopping himself around to other schools. WTF? Please...spare me the details about his trial, Maturi, blah, blah, blah. I understand what's going on but he's nuts if he thinks he's going to be able to play next year if he transfers......yet again. Yeah, the anal retentive NC double a-holes are going cut some slack for a player who is being accused of a felony and wants to attend his 4th college in 4 years. Yeah, they'll get right on that one

lets be real his trial date is like the release date for Detox. If will forever be pushed back, and it can never be as good as everyone originally expected.

a couple issues ago Rolling Stone said Detox was coming out for sure this fall.

It would be up to the NCAA to decide if Trevor gets a special waiver to play next year, not the Memphis AD or coach. And a guy going on his fourth school in four years who also is on trial for felony assault, not to mention to a school recently found to have committed major violations, would seem to be against everything the NCAA has ever done regarding waiver's.

Who is advising this kid? My guess is nobody, which is why Memphis is able to blow smoke up his butt.

It sounds like he is only listening to the advice he wants to hear. I was excited about him being a Gopher, but wow do we have some boneheads. The only way he plays next year is at the U of M, if he concludes his positively. I literally can't comprehend how he can't grasp this reality.

Why isn't this considered tampering? Isn't Memphis essentially recruiting a player already under scholarship at another school?

I've gotta say, Trevor is getting one heck of a free "well rounded" education for very little work on the court.

Didn't he go to 2 or 3 high schools? On top of that, possibly his 4th college. Where there's smoke, there's fire.

I posted this a couple of weeks ago and I still think it's applicable:

Losing PC, Mbakwe and Royce is a huge blow to our frontcourt. We need a PF, and Oto is a SF who could play limited PF, but i don't think he is big enough or a skilled post player. This year will be hard no question, I see more Colt/Sampson and Samp/Walker lineups. The one good thing is that this gives us I believe 4 schollys for next year, land 1 SG (coleman) 1 SF (jesperson) 1 PG (who knows yet) and 1 PF. hopefully if coleman and Jesperson make it into the top 100, other big time recruits will take notice. We could use a skilled 4 like trevor or Royce would have been

While we won't miss Trevor or Royce this year...we certainly could use them. That said, if Walker lives up to his potential, we will be fine by next year as he is a true power forward. It would have been nice for things to work out differently with Paul Carter but life has a funny time getting in the way. Paul was not a power forward anyway...

We have enough pieces to perform well this year (barring injury). The key for the future will be for a couple of the new guys to blossom into quality guys by year 2.

Problem is, Walker is not a Pf, he is a center. You want your PF's to be moblie, athletic, Good defenders like damian, PC could play damian;s role, he had some post moves and while not very big he was effective. Mo walker weighs around 270-300 lbs, and id imagine is pretty slow. the only person on our team that can play PF is RS3 and maybe Oto. maybe

Damian wasn't a power forward.

Well, he started every game as the power forward, but I know what you mean. He wasn't the prototypical PF. But, he certainly wasn't a SF, either. We kind of played a strange 3-guard lineup with a tweener SF/PF starting at the PF.

He was actually a pretty standard small forward. Can guard multiple positions, decent mid-range game but more of a slasher, 6'7'' without limited rebounding ability. How wasn't he a small forward?

I am very aware of how he was used, but that doesn't change what he was.

You can actually get away without a power forward in the Big Ten. The loss of Trevor and Royce and to a degree Carter is exacerbated by the lack of of similar players on other Big Ten teams. Michigan state is really the only other Big Ten team that has wide bodies at both 4 and 5, and I am pretty sure Walker can out run Nix and Green.

Maybe Nix, they are similar players but I give mo the edge because he is a better shooter/passer but he definatley cannot outrun green. Green could play a wing if he really wanted, if he developed a three ball. But damian might have been a SF but he did play the 4 and was pretty good at it, what im saying is, we need a rebounder, a guy who can lock down post players like Sullinger, Coble, Shurna, Leuer, Green etc. A true PF who dominates the post. Sampson and Colt are really good, RS3 on the offensive side, colt on defense, but they cant gaurd those mobile PFs which brings up my next question, are we at all pursuing Cinemon Bowers? we should really offer him.

Damian Johnson

Damian Johnson was a forward. On offense he was not a slasher actually putting the ball on the floor is the weak part of his game.

On offense he posted alot on the block despite the slim build and would catch n shoot 15 footers. On defense when the Gophers were not playing zone he would guard a power forward -when the Gophers were in a 3 guard set he was down low alot.

To say he didnt have power forward responsibilities on the Off end and the Def end would be wrong in my opinion. College starting lineups are so unorthodox - 3 guard, 4 guards, no center you really cant pinhole someone.

If Walker can out run Draymond Green then we have something in Walker. I will wait to see that. Green is a baller...

I remember Damian slashing to the basket plenty. He is definitely more of a small forward than he is a power forward, regardless of how we used him.

Yes, you got that one part right.

Walker's presence at center, along with Colt Iverson, allows Ralph III to play the PF spot full time.

I think with Walker's shooting ability he could step in at power forward at times as well. He would provide a good high-low with Colt and would provide another big body to clog lanes and provide rebounding in the zone defense. I think he will be able to sub in for whoever needs a breather between Ralph and Colt, it will likely be Colt a majority of the time though.
