Shooter Now: Gophers are redshirting Maurice Walker

Interesting.

Wow. Very interesting. I'd like to hear more of that conversation than just 5 words.

To address the earlier question about injuries being hush hush, yeah I'd say that's pretty much normal. It's pretty frustrating sometimes when you're waiting to hear news about a player, but long-term injuries have long recovery/rehab periods where there isn't much to report. Most of you will hate this example, but the same kind of thing happened with Packers safety Nick Collins after he injured his neck the 2nd game of the season. He completely disappeared from the news until an article finally popped up about him within the past month.

Yes, the information has been that he is working himself back after a very serious knee injury/surgery, and that it is best for Mo, and the future to redshirt him this year. Why is that very little information?

Ah, my bad. I meant "very little information" up until now. Today was information.
Everything up until today was "very little"... He was injured in 2010, it's now 2012, and up until yesterday, the average gopher fan would have shrugged his/her shoulders if you asked them his status. just wondering if that was the norm.

And again, I am not as deep into the program as many of you, but would consider myself a hard-core fan. I have been following this forum for years, and up until today I had no idea what Mo Walker's status was....

There is a blog on startribune about it now.

Basically Mo says he wants to be out there helping and wants to play every minute he can. Tubby disagrees. I think Mo is showing that he is a great teammate wanting to be out there helping, and Tubby is still thinking about the future of MN and Mo.

Not many kids think they should be red shirted (id HATE to sit a year) but tubby has to do what is best for the team in the future, and likely for Mo as well.

You are not a fan. Why do you even spend your time on here?

Wow, thought police out in force. Maybe 98Vqueen, PUD and you can form some kind of GH censorship board. What do you want him to do, massage the numbers so that they show that everything is unicorns and skittles.

Remember: just because it's mid-season doesn't mean that Walker would be in mid-season form. He didn't get the non-conference tuneup games the rest of the team did.

As much as I'd like to see him in the rotation, this isn't a bad thing.

A quote from Walker:

Briefly: Sophomore center Mo Walker spoke today for the first time since deciding to redshirt this season after recovering slowly from a knee injury that lingered from last season. Walker missed playing in the Big Ten as a freshman after suffering a torn posterior cruciate ligament and meniscus in his right knee.

The Toronto native had surgery on the knee exactly a year ago, but there were some setbacks for Walker in November, Smith said.

"The coaches just decided with the trainers and myself that I was going to redshirt," the 6-foot-10, 289-pound Walker said. "We were just playing by ear, day-by-day. They just don't feel like it's ready yet. They want to wait until I'm 100 percent before I play again. It feels good right now, truthfully. But there are still some strength issues, still some slight pain at times."

Go Gophers!!

You're right, why would we expect one of GH's biggest contributors to actual be a fan of the team? Who cares if he's not a supporter and throws digs at them all the time, that's great.

You are to GW what Killjoy is to wren.

We could have:

Healyty Mo
6th Year Trev
Senior Welch
Vet. starting gurad Au. Hollins
Vet backup pg Mav
2nd year Joe and Dre
EE w/ Raplh gone!
Rodney? 50/50 he comes back.

This year still might turn out okay-good, but next year could be big.

I don't understand the controversy. Seems like the best decision fo Mo and the team. Gives Mo a chance to completely heal and get stronger which should reduce the chance of injury. I would expect Mo's playing time would be limited this year based on where we are in the schedule and playing behind Ralph and EE (at this point). Prevents Mo from losing two years of competition. If Mo's performance blows up he can always leave early for the NBA.

If Tubby knows Mo is not going to play much - he should tell him to redshirt. Which he did.

Helps the Gophers as they get another year of competition from an experienced big man.
