Shooter Now: Gophers are redshirting Maurice Walker

Strange that Mo will be in his 3rd year, yet we know so little about what he'll be able to do. We only have a 12-game sampling. It's almost like we'll be getting a freshman.

Nice to hear the knee is rounding into shape.

I like it. The team is starting to gel and I think we have a decent shot at the tourney without him. So we might as well redshirt him. Three years from now we will have Andre Hollins, Joe Coleman, Oto Osenieks, Elliot Eliason, and Mo Walker as seniors. That would probably be a great starting lineup by itself, but we'll probably have some other underclassman that could be starting over those guys **cough Tyus cough**. The future is bright.

While some of our "experts" are in this "I want it, and I want it now" syndrome, the best move for next year and beyond is to redshirt big Mo. It is so simple.

I have no reason to believe he can stay healthy for a full season. So I'm losing excitement for Big Mo's Gopher future.

Really hope I'm wrong, because I loved his upside.

One injury and he is Greg Oden.

Haha, yeah no kidding. Some Gopher fans go way out of their way to be down on players. I'm happy about this decision, can't wait to see Big Mo dominate the B1G next year.

I agree with you because you are an "expert". Get him healthy for next year.

Really like the move. It was awfully tempting to want Big Mo to get in the rotation for the B1G season here, but this will be better in the long haul...especially considering how much brighter the future looks now than it did 10 days ago.

Not that I wasn't before, but I'm excited to kick back and see what kind of noise our current roster can make the rest of this season.

Not getting a big man in next years class won't hurt at all, with Walker redshirting it is probably better this happened. They really need one in 2013 though.

Rayno's Blog makes it sound like they are holding him out for more reasons than just the knee injury. I don't think there is much to that from everything else we have heard.

I was just going to comment on that after reading it. Not sure what all the mystery is about. I think Rayno might be just assuming "If he's healthy, play him." ...which is shortsighted and doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me the way the team has rebounded the past couple games. Obviously we could use him, but it's just not worth it (of course everyone's entitled to their opinion).

Rayno has done a pretty good job thus far though, so I can't imagine she wouldn't have thought that through. Hopefully there's nothing more to this than the knee. Let him take his time getting back into playing shape so he can explode next year. With full confidence in his knee.

He's just ripping on Rayno, saying it's not in her character to think about a situation like this from all angles. So in her mind, because the Gophers aren't playing a healthy Walker, something must be up.

Rayno doesn't exactly engage in abstract thought.

Well, at least she's good with numbers.

Take a look at this chart from the last six games, split into the first three and the last three:

FG FGA 3P 3PA FT FTA

12/27 26 69 4 14 16 18
1/1 21 49 8 19 6 8
1/4 23 50 4 12 14 24

Total 41.6 percent 35.5 percent 72 percent

1/8 30 55 10 15 9 19
1/12 29 62 6 17 13 18
1/15 21 38 5 10 33 44

Total 51.6 percent 50 percent 67.9 percent

The numbers show that from the first three games to the last three, the Gophers shooting improved

• 10 percentage points from the field after making 10 more shots, but attempting 13 fewer
• 14.4 percent from three-point range, making five more total in their last three games than their first three.

Of course, the one area in which the Gophers did not improve statistically was free-throw shooting. But it's worth mentioning that the Gophers actually got to the line 31 more times in their second three games, a stunning jump. While the percentage is not as good, the team manufactured 19 more points by that method in the last three games.

I'm into some stats that are far from mainstream, but her method above of combining Iowa's and Purdue's shooting statistics with the Gophers' (rows 1/4 and 1/8 above) to calculate a single team's shooting stats is a new one to me. Either it's another error, or we're looking at another Dean Oliver.

(btw, my quick math says the Gophers' FG shooting is up about 5% in games 4 through 6 vs. 1 through 3 of the conference season... 3FG up nearly 15% and eFG up about 7%. 45 more FTA, with 31 more FTM.) Better shooting is due to playing against horse-crap defenses.

And it has nothing to do with the fact that the guys are playing better basketball. Penn State seemed to play some pretty good defense in their win over Illinois last night.

Points per possession allowed this year... all games
Northwestern 1.03, the worst of all teams in the Big Ten
Tied for 10th... Penn State & Indiana at 1.02.

Defensive efficiency in conference games this year
Worst in the conference... Indiana
9th... Penn State

You are not a fan. Why do you even spend your time on here?

I've been noticing all your negative post and all the digs you throw in about the players/program... it's as if you only post to prove you are correct about a topic, and don't care one bit about Gophers basketball. This past week or so people have asked if you are actually a gophers fan, I'm also waiting for a response to this question.

Still waiting.

Not trying to start anything with this question, just generally curious.

Is it this normal (across other programs and sports) to be this quiet/hush hush about a player's injury and status? We have all been checking this forum for months and there has been very little information on Big Mo.

Maybe that's the norm.

Yes, the information has been that he is working himself back after a very serious knee injury/surgery, and that it is best for Mo, and the future to redshirt him this year. Why is that very little information?

Walker said he's actually ready to scrimmage with the team and run on his knee. But he thought it was best to redshirt.

Tubby said there was a setback for Walker in November that made it difficult to be ready to play by the start of Big Ten, which was the goal
