Look for Jerry Kill to soon receive a pay raise of about $1 million per year. The increase will put the University of Minnesota football coach's annual salary at about $2.2 million. Last year, his $1.2 million salary was lowest in the Big Ten.

Kill, in his third season with the Gophers last year, led the team to an 8-5 record, including four straight conference victories and a second straight bowl game.

Go Gophers!!

No mention of extra years so if it is just a raise it would seem to fall in line with what a lot of the other coaches in the conference are making. Have said all along a raise wouldn't bother me but an extension at this point would. Would assume if Kill is getting a bump his assistants will also get something out of the deal because I don't think Kill is the type that would take a bump in his salary without taking care of his assistants as well.

Anything I've ever heard or read coming from the U never mentioned extension when a raise was talked about. I never believed it was even discussed.

Ridiculous if true. The guy is 8-16 in conference play and really hasn't been close to winning any other B1G games. The problem with a raise is that it almost assuredly increases the buyout. I would need to see, at minimum, a winning conference season along with no/minimal health issues before I'd think a raise was warranted.

Soupcan, is that you?

If you don't think Coach Kill is on other team's radar, you're naive. They will eagerly pay him this type of money to lure him and his staff away from Minny. Perhaps your attitude is "good riddance". If it is, you would be in a very small minority opinion among Gopher fans. His and his staff's salaries are the lowest in the B1G. Kill and Co. are better than at least six other programs in the conference including Rutgers and Maryland and deserved to be paid accordingly.

And if he thinks he is going to get one more nickel than minimum wage, he has another thing coming.

If you took the combined salaries of the football coach and basketball coach at each Big Ten school, we would be at the bottom by how much?

I would throw the naive charge back at you. If you think an AD at a BCS school would actively pursue Jerry Kill at this point in time, you are naive. To me, a raise should be given when you have accomplished something that was unexpected when you signed your deal. One .500 conference season and an overall 8-16 conference record (with double digit loss margins being the norm) does not warrant any type of increased compensation.

Where is this program at if next year things go back to 2-6 or if Jerry Kill misses more game time? If this report is true and IF the numbers from USA Today on B1G coaches salaries are accurate, then Kill would be right in the ballpark of Gary Andersen at Wisconsin and Pat Fitzgerald at Northwestern. Does that make sense? No. Further, Mark Dantonio allegedly made a little under 2 million this year to coach Michigan State. That means that two 7-1 seasons in the B1G didn't increase his compensation above the 2 million dollar mark.

I cannot comment on what agreement Dantonio and MSU had in the past. I do know that his staff will be behind only tOSU and Michigan in coaches salaries this coming season. I have a feeling that Andersen won't be in the bottom half very long as well. Kill's staff is on par with Fitzgerald's imo. He definitely deserves to be paid better than Beckman, Wilson, and Hazell. Pelini is over-payed. He deserves more than what MD is paying Edsall.

You don't think KSU wouldn't look at a coach with a record of building programs and is a Kansas native to take over for Bill Snyder after he is done coaching for good. They would snap at a chance in a heartbeat.

From the sound of it, your narrow mind is already made up that you would love to see the best coach this program has had in 45 years leave town I'm sure anything I say is pointless.

Your complaint is that, after going 4-4, Kill's salary is in the ballpark of a coach who went 1-7 last year and lost to Kill on his home turf?

Have you lost your mind. How much has the team improved in the past 3 years? You can look at the records or if you are really a fan, you can tell by watching the team. Turning a D1 football team around takes time and by almost all fans that I have talked to standards, this team's turnaround has exceeded expectations. What are your expectations? Or are you a Badger/Hawkeye fan?

We just had our 2nd or 3rd best season of the last 25 years and there are people complaining about getting our head coach out of the basement of salaries...

Is kill still rebating the $800,000 to the u of m from the unc cancellation?

Pretty sure we made that back on the TCU series. In any event - let it go. It was a sensationalized non-story.

Probably not if you include Mason's, Brewster's, and Tubby's buyouts. Haha

There aren't people complaining. There is a person complaining.

well I've read many times right here on Gopherhole that Shooter is clueless so there is that.

The details are what matters.

At any rate, terminations provisions are key. Don't see JK around for more than 2 years, but a poorly constructed deal could change my view on that.

(PS - JK's not really the lowest paid Big Ten football coach.)

My god, you're weird. Is this because he's going to leave for a better job, or because he'll be fired? Or are you still obsessing about his health issues?

I'm anxious to hear the answer to that.

I think I sat near some of the Negative Nellies at games this year. They are the ones that seem to take pleasure when something bad happens in a game so they can complain and say I told you so. Might it be worth enjoying this success? Life is too short.

If I remember correctly, by dumping UNC, the total net affect was in the black and that we made money even with the cancellation fee. So, this comment falls under the category of being without merit.

How much is left to pay on Tubby's and Brewster's buyout? Mason's is done right?
