Chatted with Jerry Kill a few days ago, soon after he had been examined by a melanoma specialist. The former Gophers football coach was ecstatic.

“I got great news — I’m cancer-free,” he said. “I feel as good as I’ve felt in probably 14, 15 years. My health’s awesome.”

Kill, 58, is an offensive assistant for Texas Christian University coach Gary Patterson.

“I miss Minnesota, but right now in my life, it can’t get any better,” Kill said. “I’m working for a great coach, and Fort Worth’s a great town.”

Go Gophers!!

I bet he’s angling to be OC. I know they already got a guy. It’s just sad though.

ol' jer is a ball coach. it's who he is, it's in his blood. he turns boys into men and football is his vehicle. if this is as good as he's felt in 14-15 years that's good news, his good health will allow him to impact more boys.

Didn't mention other programs...says he misses Minnesota. Nice to hear. Now that his health is back to where it should be, he shouldn't do anything to provoke it.

No doubt Jerry Kill did really good things for this program but I was really disappointed with the way he talked so negatively about Kill and his wife. I think he stepped over the bounds and was really disappointing.
I assume you meant PJ and I agree. Lost a ton of respect for him when he did that.

There must have been something that happened behind the scenes that resulted in that. I'm not agreeing with it, but something must have happened between the two coaches.

Believe it was that Fleck did not give more credit/respect to what was done here before and said the culture needed to change (which PJ would say taking over Alabama as well).

I was a big Kill fan but man I can’t imagine his wife is overly thrilled he keeps playing with fire like this and angling to keep coming back. Hope it works out for him

Changing the culture was Coyle's "must" when he hired a new coach, right? Why not say it if you're PJ. And as for not giving Kill credit/ respect for what he had done, maybe I don't watch press conferences for new head coaches enough but I can't imagine that's standard operating procedure, especially when Claeys had coached the team for 1 1/2 years at that point. I know Fleck coached on Kill's staff at one point, but still.

Hopefully he’s social distancing.

I think everyone in Minnesota appreciates the job Jerry Kill did when he was here - he was very well liked here and we all wish him the very best. It was very strange and bizarre to see him take the low road on PJ Fleck. Perhaps some of it is rooted in jealousy as I am sure he wishes he were still here.

A lesson for everyone is you ALWAYS take the high road and some things are better left unsaid. I felt a little bad that he wasn't a big part of the really fun year we had last year as a good portion of that team were his players that he brought in. It would have been fun to see him mixing in with the fans and team but he brought it on himself.

Fleck also then said, many times, that he wanted to instill his own culture. He said that this doesn't mean the old culture was necessarily bad, he just wanted to instill his own. Most leaders in any organization would do that. Put your own personal stamp on it. PJ maybe could have articulated that better. But... PJ talks about culture every time you turn around. Jerry took that to mean that the culture under his regime was bad.

And I am officially done caring about what Kill is up to these days.

I believe Denny Green took the High Road

yeah I don't think Fleck was wrong at all in how he handled any of it. Kill went out and threw punches, Fleck has avoided him and taken the high road by my estimation.

ol' jer is a self-centered narcissistic ball coach. it's who he is, it's in his blood. he turns boys into men when it suits his needs, when needs attention, and football is his vehicle. if this is as good as he's felt in 14-15 years, it's the same BS we've heard since the NMSU game. his good health will allow him to draw more attention to himself.

I think it was simply this: Kill perceived that Fleck (and maybe Coyle?) trashed his, and then Claeys, former regime, when he/they(?) were talking about needing to come in and clean up the culture.

I think Kill took that as saying that he, and then Claeys, ran a crappy culture at Minnesota. Which we all understand is not true in the slightest. Kill did a ton of work to get grades up, and instill responsibility on the team (the much publicized "I'm a loafer" tshirts, etc.).

I think the problem was that Fleck (and Coyle?) had to say things like that, because they used the sex scandal and then Claeys tweeting out support for the players as the scapegoat to fire Tracy and hire PJ. So they had to back that up, in the press.

Seems like a big, unfortunate thing in that is the way it had to play out, and I think Jerry took great offense to those comments.

I hope there were private comments to smooth things over and explain it.

Also want to bolster my guess that Jerry is angling to be at least co-OC at TCU, because the previous co-OC has been hired away by Missouri.

"
Luper, who has 24 years of college coaching experience and is regarded among the nation's top recruiters, has spent the past seven seasons at TCU, including the last three as co-offensive coordinator, running backs coach and recruiting coordinator. Details of Luper's contract with Mizzou, as well as his specific coaching duties, will be released pending completion of the human resources process.
"

I just hope that if Gary does allow it, that somehow, someway, they can fix it up so that Jerry can't be himself and go overboard with it. Limit his hours, limit his stress.

We all, all know for a fact that Jerry Kill deliberately lied to all of us regarding his medical condition and that he could do the job at full speed even while he took his meds. He knew that was false at the time he said it was true. He lied at the most important level for the most important reasons. Therefore, Jerry lost me. Today I hope Jerry has a nice life but I would never believe anything he ever says again.
