Shooter: It will be interesting to see if Pitino receives an adjustment on his salary

I don't think he should get a raise after one season, although he did a great job. Get to the Big dance next year and he's definitely deserving.

It'll be interesting to see whether Richard Pitino, after coaching the Gophers to the NIT championship, receives an adjustment on his $1.2 million annual salary. Minnesota, with four starters returning, should be a top-five finisher in the Big Ten next season.

Go Gophers!!

I certainly think we can finish in the top 5, but wouldn't say we should finish that high.

There should be no adjustment for NIT. The idea that NIT warrants a contract adjustment is absurd. Was initial contract based upon expectations that the Gophs were not expected to make the NCAA's and that event a NIT appearance warrants a contract adjustment. Maybe Pitino could get a incentive bonus added to his contract for NIT success. Walters like Sid are object examples of journalistic incompetence.

I am not sure what Gopher program some people follow, but winning championships and 25 games is not common place around here. I believe we only have one other championship in our 100+ year history, and we have never won 25 games (not vacated). This was a pretty good accomplishment for a young, first year coach, and the country has taken notice. A pay raise may be required to show the fans, other programs, and Pitino himself that we are dedicated to advancing the program. We got him on the cheap because he was an inexperienced head coach and he was looking for a BCS school opportunity. His stock is definitely higher this April than last.

We went 23-9 in an Elite Eight year, your whole 25 wins because of the NIT theory is essentially hollow.

Well, I guess you got me. I also forgot the pre-1920's national championships. My mistake, I guess we do have seasons like this every 25 years or so.

Sid is suggesting something similar this morning in his column. It's important to remember that some people thought Richard wasn't qualified for this job, that he would be outclassed being on the same floor with Izzo, Beilein and Ryan, that he would get embarrassed being fed into that wood chipper. That's the part that pleases me about his performance: that, even though he's obviously learning this gig on the job - any coach in his second year as a HC would be - he's at minimum holding his own against veteran coaching and sometimes bettering them. I was so impressed with how well coached SMU was the other night. Larry Brown deserves all the bouquets he gets. And Richard stood toe to toe with him and beat him with, and let's be honest here, a lesser team. Coming back from down 7 after that timeout...damn, that's impressive.

If losing the Texas Bowl gets an adjustment gets a salary adjustment I don't see how it's absurd that wining the NIT would.

it is called there is a reason that winning an NIT rarely qualifies for a contract incentive bonus. Do you realize that if if Pitino won the NIT every year he would eventually get fired for not making the Big Dance!

If you believe Pitino deserves a raise right now, then you're part of the problem of collegiate athletics.

I must disagree. I got a 10 percent raise after my first year with my company out of college. Not because I was God's gift but because I simply demonstrated that I belonged and could do the work. It's not unusual.

Since God now posts on Gopherhole, maybe he could comment on your giftedness. :)

If Pitino is underpaid due to the risk of his hire as an inexperienced head coach, I think we have seen enough to justify rectifying the situation.

I'm not God but I work for Him. I can testify to BG's giftedness. It's real.:D

And if kill loses the Texas Bowl every year he'll get fired for not contending in the Big Ten. That didn't stop him from receiving a raise after doing it early on in his coaching tenure.

apples to oranges....doubt if you started out with a 6 year compensation defined contract.

Kill actually has been improving the program...the hoops team digressed from last year. No raise for doing worse. Football team started from the bottom when kill took over. So Texas Bowl looks a lot prettier than NIT.

25-13 > 21-13

That's misleading, and you know it.

Pitino had a great first year. He exceeded my expectations. But he doesn't deserve a raise. No coach deserves a raise after year one absent a fantastic NCAA showing at a non blue blood program or a substantially similar outcome (like winning the Big Ten regular season).

Wasn't a fan of the Jerry Kill raise at all and wouldn't be a fan of a raise for Coach Pitino at this point either. The only difference with Pitino is that I believe there is some risk of him being approached about another high major job, while I don't see that happening with Coach Kill. It would be nice if we waited until a coach had a winning record in his own conference at least one time before we started handing out raises. I think Coach Pitino has a good chance to be in position for a raise following next season.

I would give him some kind of bump. Do we want to build this program or not? Season ticket sales will be up next year. Give him a piece of the pie and show him you want him for the long haul. No extension though. No decrease in buyout.

Agree

Why can't they just throw him and staff a bonus. No need for a raise yet. Give em a gift certificate for the Vu.

I don't know if he deserves a raise or not. It's not my money. That being said, I was certainly happy with year one.

But the "25 wins" is not the reason to do it, in my opinion. If he had made it to the sweet sixteen this year, he would have had 3 less wins but a much better year. Not all wins are created equal.
