Shooter: Don’t be surprised if former Orono star Nolan Groves ends up with the Gophers for his sophomore season.

But Cade Tyson established himself as a scorer at Belmont so he had that history. Nolan Groves has no history at the collegiate level. He's a bit like Freitag after his freshman year at Wisconsin but Freitag has established himself as an impact player (20 points per game) at Buffalo this season. Once you do that the likelihood that you can do that again improves.
Totally fair. Was just using Tyson as an example of a guy who was not able to do much with his previous school.

Let him prove himself at a lower level. Tyson at least showed something at Belmont. I was skeptical of his lack of floor time at UNC, but it worked out.
I'm willing to trust the evaluation of Niko and staff.....if they think he is worth recruiting I'm willing to give them and him the benefit of the doubt.

Grayson Grove, Nolan Anderson, and Nolan Groves may be too much….

I was referring to Nolan Groves rather than Grayson Grove.
It's begun- commence the fights over completely different people in the same argument where no one wins and everyone is just confused!!! :ROFLMAO:

While we're at it...

I know he's a one-of-us, but Asuma is not performing at anything but a lower end B10 PG, and that's being kind (the Torvik site has a ranking function by role, and he's the 15th best "scoring PG" in the B10). An upgrade would not only be welcome, it'd be advised.
His numbers and progression have been fantastic... with context. He's just he's not supposed to be averaging 37 mins a night (last 9 games). It's the last 3 tired minutes of a 10 minutes stint, where instead of getting a breather, he's making fatigued decisions. 1 TO and 0/1 3pt each of those sections and that's an easy 4to 0/4 statline impact from those fateful 12 minutes. Youth and being forced to play way too many minutes on a struggling team are major factors here. Not sure who wouldn't struggle

Well we get fifteen spots and I would rather have Nolan Groves than RJ Spencer and Max Gizzi, Niko wanted him in the spring, probably won't play much next year but if Niko thinks he can develop him let's see what he's got.i am sure we will add older guys too
They're never going to recruit players who expect to play for those 13-15 spots.

The problem with wanting better, established scorers/players is everyone else wants those guys also. Unless you’re going to outbid teams it comes down to Niko selling the program against others.

Tough task when guys have tons of options. For now, developing some bit players or finding guys who fit well here may be the only option.

Freitag for example may have a lot of high major interest. Not sure why he’d choose MN over other options.

We must be looking at different numbers. The ones I’m seeing - on Torvik- show a player whose offensive rating has decreased over last year and is worse in conference play this year. He’s the 5th best rated player on the team. And compared to his peers across the league, he’s woeful.

If he was from Cherry, Illinois, there’d be a lot more criticism.

Wait a minute, wait a minute...wait just a gol' dang minute here.
We hired the wrong coach?

Maybe! Maybe not!

But selling a program that hasn’t achieved moderate success in 30? Years is harder than selling Duke or Kentucky or others. Especially when they will pay more.

Duke and Kentucky (plus another 50 programs we feel we can’t out-recruit) still have a finite number of roster spots. We can certainly compete for players against NW, Penn St., Georgia Tech, Pitt, Utah, Kansas St., Providence, S. Carolina, LSU—the bottom feeders of Power 5. Plus all of the mid-majors. We simply need better players, and more of them. Hell, we could probably field a decent team just from the leftovers of the transfer portal who were left without a chair when the music stopped.

I understand that, but I think with all the injuries we had this year, you spin it as an opportunity to come in and get minutes and battle for a rotation spot and Groves can decide from there if he wants to come in and do that or go to a lower level for more of a sure thing. I am guessing some convos happened behind the scenes if media will put it out there

Groves is not falling from highly recruited to "you get no $$ and can be our 13th guy" because he had an underwhelming freshman year. I think people are vastly understating his value.
