I believe the PAC 12 is the only Big 5 conference not using 8 officials this year. NFL officials make $4000-$8000 per game based on experience.

Per game

HS. $85
D3. $150-$200
D2. $300-$500

Crazy thing is that an official pays their own travel out of the game fee.

And some of the NBA refs sell their upgrades and don't report it as income.

If that last statement is true on the BCS level that's unreal. I travel weekly for work and generally book last minute and most tickets run me $1500 to $2000. Being that these officials don't get assignments until last minute and often have to fly to regional airports they'd be cash flow negative, hard.

I doubt Kenny Mauer would be saying "good for them" after serving 5 months for tax evasion.

I thought that was the case. Maybe I'm wrong but my impression is that crews are rated throughout the year and the best are given premium games.
 

And by last minute I meant the Monday before a game. Generally airline tickets really spike two weeks out from departure.

In 2000, Mauer was convicted of a felony, three counts of tax evasion, and one count of obstruction of justice for not reporting downgraded airline tickets as income to the Internal Revenue Service. Mauer failed to pay taxes on $26,500 of additional income over a three-year period. Mauer was one of two NBA referees who chose not to plea bargain his case, believing that there was an injustice done against him. Mauer stated that he never intended to commit a criminal act, that his accountants signed off on his tax returns, and that he was not told of any issues. In April 2001, Mauer was sentenced to five months in jail, five months of home detention, three years of supervised release, and 800 hours of community service. At the conclusion of the trial, Mauer said, "I'm proud that I stood up for myself. At the same time, I'm relieved that it turned out this way. This is the first decent day I've had in a year and a half. This summer is going to be hard, serving my sentence. But I'm going to turn it into a positive thing. I'm going to help the kids, I'll get into shape."


And what I know about it from people involved in the case:

Now this was only one part of why they really wanted to go after him, but they thought they had him for a much larger issue. They noticed that he had flown to Thailand about 5 times the previous 18 months or so, and thought he was involved in something much larger than simple tax evasion. Drug trafficking, or something like that. What it really turned out to be was that every time Mauer would ref again with Pat Riley as coach, he would relentlessly badger him about where he got his suits, because he wanted to dress just like him. Riley held out for a long time, but finally relented and said that he has to follow his instructions or he would not follow through. Mauer agreed. So he told him to go to his guy in Houston, but that was only to select a bolt of cloth to make the suit, the real magic was in the tailor, who resides in Thailand. So after Mauer agreed to purchase 4 or 6 bolts of fabric (at a very dear cost), he finally learned that he had to fly to Thailand for an initial fitting, back for a trial fitting, back again for another fitting, and 1 or 2 final fittings.

I never did go back and look at the game logs of Laker games that he reffed in, but I'll bet you that the Lakers had a lot fewer fouls called on them than the opponent. He is an arrogant prick, and I'm glad he got pinched.

No biggie, I just cut/paste from wiki since I knew I wouldn't have to retype it. However, the Pat Riley thing went unreported (as far as I can tell).

They usually know games for about 3-4 weeks out.
