Shooter: 92% ticket renewal for men's hoops; 225 new season tix added since Pitino

if my math is correct, that would mean we have a net loss as of now. that's not good. pitino definitely needs to energize the fan base. there could be some really low attendance numbers at some of the non-conference games.

per Shooter:

Gophers men's basketball season tickets have had a 92 percent renewal, and since the hiring of Richard Pitino as coach in April, 255 new season tickets have been sold.

Go Gophers!!

Curious as to what 92% renewal rate is in comparison to other schools in the bottom half/middle of the B1G... I know thats not a great number for NFL franchises, its not a BAD number either, but it's nothing to beat your chest over.

If there were only 2800 season tickets last year, then we're on the rise!!!

I am really surprised that Gopher Hoops renewal is slightly lower that Gopher Football renewal. I would have assumed the significantly better product put on the floor last season and the new coach Pitino would combine for a higher renewal rate. Gopher Hoops fans also got to witness the big home win against Indiana that included a storm the court moment for the first time in ages.

Possible reasons for lower renewal rate

1. Time of year- Is it possible that some season ticket holders will still renew for basketball considering the season is a few months away still?
2 .Non Conference schedule- Is the lack of quality opposition coming to the Barn pre-B!G season becoming too much to swallow?
3. Price- The commitment to hoops season tickets is more than the commitment to football
4. Disappointment with Pitino hire- I think most expected a more established coach coming to Minnesota, even though most posters on GH are happy with him
5. Expectations- Last year we were talking a potential top 3 finish (as an upside scenario), this year we are talking middle of the pack as an upside scenario.

Probably a little of everything and some things beyond those. I've spoken to a number of people, and generally a lot of folks are squarely in 'show me' mode. There's a lot of cautious optimism about the Pitino hire; there's also a lot of healthy skepticism; there's a lot of 'I've seen this before' (Dan Monson); some have been turned of by the feeling of futility of the Tubby years and are fatigued; some wanted a 'home run hire' (Flip Saunders); some are turned off by the nature of the modern student athlete / prima donna, the facilities arms race (TV's in the crapper), the benefits they get beyond tuition, room and board (practically a training table), and their mental and emotional softness. And one guy - a former student manager from years ago - cited ALL these things. There's a good deal of disenchantment out there. Additionally, you have people who are getting a little old to go to games in the middle of winter, and you've got people who continue to struggle through the economic depression. Sometimes it's hard to see the real world from the Gopherhole.

The season ticket number is closer to 10k. They have sold around 2000 student season tickets already and I expect that to go up as the school year begins.

That's my math too - with 7,411, that means 6818 renewed, so a loss of 592, which means a net loss of 337. So basically, close to the same smaller crowds we had last year. But there is a few months to sell more.

Is this a surprise considering we lost Mbakwe and we have a new coach that has not shown us he can coach yet?

Biggest reason. Minnesotans support winners over everything else. When the team isn't winning we don't really show up(general statement please don't take this as a personal attack on your own fandom).

Tubby was an experienced coach who showed us that he couldn't.

Why are you talking about Tubby? That was about Pitino. You want me to move on from Tubby, but you feel the need to keep bringing him up.

Absolutely no reference to Tubby, or underhand jab at Pitino... Lay off Don...

I really disagree with this statement. Basketball attendance has far exceeded performance on the court for years. The Gophers are perennially in the top 25 in attendance in hoops, yet the program hasn't reached that level in years. In football, the stadium should be empty with the product that's put on the field. I feel like Minnesotan's condone losing too much and that's one of the reasons why unsuccessful coaches have had such a long leash in revenue sports.

In general, it's the exception rather the rule where a fan base in any state supports an unsuccessful product. I can think of an example like South Carolina in football (even pre-Spurrier) or possibly the Sacramento Kings at times in the NBA (though not recently) where ticket sales have been high, but the product was not strong.

The thing that's impossible to know is what ticket sales would be looking like if the U hadn't made the coaching move. One could speculate, though.

Cubs in baseball, Bulls in basketball(even while bad in the early 2000s). Red sox before they won the title. but those are bigger markets so I don't know if you can compare.

The vikings when bad have a hard time selling out, even with blackout opportunities. (even with AP doing AP we were 21st in attendance in the NFL based on % of stadium sold)

Given how bad the timberwolves are I actually was surprised by the 20-25th ranked attendance over the last few years. except for 1 when we were like 15th.

The Wild have fallen between the 14-2nd in attendance(ranked by percent of tickets sold) over the last 7 years with higher years being the ones we actually had a shot. but given the fact that we haven't really won anything that's impressive.

the twins, since the new stadium was built haven't fallen outside of 10th in percentage sold. Despite the poor performance.

gophers basketball is consistently between 23-30 over the last 6-7 years. (i might have missed a year) which is good for 6-7th in the BIG10 witch is about right given our smaller arena size and team performance.

Sorry for the initial statement you're probably right. I stand corrected. Thank you for making me look this stuff up. My perception was wrong.

You did okay. The Gopher Basketball Faithful were once considered the most knowledgeable and loyal fans in town. Give Coach P. a little time.
