Athletic director Mark Coyle will identify and then hire the next coach with the expected approval of U president Joan Gabel and the Board of Regents. His candidate pool should include several coaches with Minnesota ties. This is an opportune time to choose a coach familiar with and appreciative of the U, and the state’s people, culture, quality of life and Fortune 500 business community.

A coach with state ties can bring unique passion and commitment to the Gopher job. He will want Minnesotans to be proud of their Gophers. With a commitment and attitude like that, it’s much less likely the coach will see this as a stepping stone job and want to move on.

This is a huge hiring decision for Coyle. Gopher basketball has to end the cycle of failed coaching eras and establish a long run of success like Wisconsin has done. A winning program translates to more than a better experience for the players and fans. Men’s basketball is the second largest income-producing sport among 22 programs in the self-supporting athletic department, and increased revenues are needed more than ever. With the state almost bursting with quality high school basketball talent, the U program has more potential than in the past and is positioned for success with the right leadership.

No he's wrong....we can't expect to get any of the good players from Minnesota. We should look at joining UST in the Summit.

So dumb. A P5/6 job is rarely a stepping stone job - no matter the school. If you are winning enough others have interest you stay with the program you are at. It is rare anyone leaves - except to a Kansas, UNC, Duke, etc. there are only a handful of jobs anyone would leave another job in one of the P5 conferences for, and there is usually some connection to that school.

I don't think that is what he is saying. I think what he was saying the same thing TT was saying. Someone who can understands what this job can be.

Yes and no. His comment is that they wouldn't view it as a stepping stone job. No P5/6 jobs are really stepping stone jobs if you have success. That said, if we can get a great coach with MN ties -- Musselman or Dutcher for me --- that would be great.

Wisconsin success seems to have been built on Minnesota players. This year 7 Mn players who seem to know their roles and with no real super stars.

Well, at least the wis st journal now only posts wi basketball game pics of the non white kids on the team. Progress. Of course, the uw tabling it’s president search to avoid hiring someone of color... not progress.

You’re correct. Someone pointed out the most recent B1G coach to leave for a different college job was Bill Self. 18 years ago. It is very unlikely a gopher coach ever does.

? P5/P6 jobs are stepping stones all of the time. Plenty of coaches leave for bigger jobs. Cuonzo Martin did it 2 times for tiny step ups. You just need a home run hire in the first place for it to happen

Multiple guys on that roster don’t play. Move on.

Do other places get as fixated on “_________ Connections” as we do? Or worry about a coach leaving to the point we hire a guy that might have deeper roots? So bizarre to me. Find a winner. Don’t box your search in to some preconceived bias. Worry about your coach leaving because we are winning too much when, you know, we actually start winning.

Don’t Michigan football fans/boosters obsess over having a “Michigan Man” lead the football program? And not even just from the state, but someone who attended the university. I though some of the fans were unsupportive of Rich Rod because he didn’t have the Michigan ties they wanted. I know Harbaugh used to play at Michigan, and I’m pretty sure Hoke and Carr did too.

I have seen Indiana basketball fans kind of obsess over keeping the best players in state, to the point of preferring that top local recruits commit to Purdue rather than go to college in another state, which confuses me. I don’t know if Bloomington newspapers write fawning articles about Glenn Robinson or Garry Harris or Greg Oden or any of the number of blue chip recruits who left Indiana while the Hoosiers were down though, discussing what a great point of pride they are for Indiana basketball.

Personally of those 7 I'd probably want 1 or 2 on my roster...that team with pitino coaching probably wins 2 big ten games all year.

Also, in this case, it's not that Gopher fans are just locking in on coaches that have some sort of MN connection. Each of these coaches would make the short list for a lot of good jobs. And outside of that, I think people are genuinely not coming up with a long list of other potential hires. Sure if someone like Nate Oates were still an option, I think most on this forum would like to have him. And. . .the MWC being a good conference, people tend to look there for options. Like many on this forum, I'll watch any team from any conference if it's an interesting matchup, but for whatever reason, this year, I'm challenged to think of potential hires from the Patriot League for instance. I"m sure there are some really good coaches that may be on Coyle's list, that we're not aware of.

Yes. They do. It might not be to quite the extent of Minnesota but we are in a pretty unique point in history. Minnesota is historically good at basketball and the only D1 college basketball team in town has not been able to improve at all during that time. Again, I'm not saying that we should expect the coach to get Chet, Suggs, Hurt, etc. I am saying that we should be in the mix for all of the second tier guys.

I am currently in TX, and I really believe one of the reasons why UT made a move is because they didn't appear to really have a shot at Quinn Ewers. There is tons of chatter here about the absurdity that UT is not landing the best players from TX. This was similar to when I was in PA. PSU fans constantly talked about landing PA guys.

Cuonzo Martin did it 2 times for tiny step ups.

Martin did it because he was on the verge of being or was already on the hot seat at Tennessee and then at Cal. He is close to being on the hot seat at Mizzou.

? I mean thats just not true for the first 2 points He left Tennessee after a sweet 16 Run and while Cal wasn't as good of an effort he was no where near the Hot seat.

He was on his way to being fired at Tennessee, but saved his job by making the Sweet 16 run. They couldn't fire him after that. Fans didn't want him, he didn't want to stay, so Cal was a landing spot for him. If you think Cal is a "tiny step up" from Tennessee, then I don't know what to tell you.

Martin left Tennessee the same way Tubby Smith left Kentucky to go to Minnesota, or Steve Alford left Iowa to go to New Mexico. They saw the writing on the wall and took a step back to get off the hot seat, out of the fire, and into a fresh spot.

And, yes, Martin was absolutely headed to the hot seat at Cal after three middling seasons on the court didn't live up to the hyped recruits he brought in. That said, you're correct, taking the Mizzou job was a step up and he returned to an area he was familiar with. But, he appears headed to the hot seat there as well after his team has faded again and missed expectations. He is 30-40 in the SEC.

This is ridiculous.

You do not need a coach to kiss the ass of the Minnesota development team organizations.

Musselman and Dutcher are so far in the past that most MN recruits may not have even heard of their fathers.

Like others have said, a B1G HC is a destination job. They can build what the want And be on the top stage.

Some prior history to MN may help attract some coaches, but it is not needed to keep them here or motivate them to win.

The top priority is to bring in the best coach that we can get, the relationships with players will naturally follow.

You kind of make my point. He was one of a very few.

When a coach has things going well in their program, you rarely see them leave for another P5 program. It doesn't happen all the time. It's rare. There are currently only 7 coaches of 65 in Big 12, Big 10, Pac 12, ACC, and SEC who left a program for another one - Turgeon, Roy Williams, Tony Bennett, Frank Martin, Bill Self, Bob Huggins, and Cuonzo Martin. 4 of the 7 were going to programs they had a connection to, with only Turgeon, CM, and FM leaving their programs for another (you could argue both Martins under some pressure from boosters/ADs).

If our coach was in a position to get a Duke, Kentucky, UNC type job, great. That means we have won a couple of Big Ten championships and been to the Final Four, and don't have to worry about finding a great coach. However, unless it is something like that, it is rare you see a coach who has a program rolling in a positive direction go to a program and start over. Unless it is a blue blood type program, which come open when doing well, other openings usually involve needing to turn things around.

Not sure which is more preposterous, that we NEED a coach with Minnesota connections, or if the coach is over 50 he needs to bring in an assistant to be the "coach in waiting".

Go Gophers!!

Employment, pay check and pride are the motivators, not geography. His provincialism is as small town as it gets IMO.

By that logic we should have hired Norries Wilson, Marc Trestman, Tony Dungy, etc... and never should have hired Fleck

Shama is pandering to his base and is the worse and really should never be posted on here again.
Must be fun to not have an actual editor.
