Gophers coach Jerry Kill wanted out of a two-game schedule in 2013-2014 against North Carolina because the Tar Heels represented more of a competitive nonconference opponent than his struggling program was ready for. What he didn’t know was athletic director Norwood Teague would eventually schedule a much more difficult opponent in TCU. And while the Gophers might not win on the field against TCU, Teague arranged financial terms easing the expense of vacating the North Carolina games.

Minnesota was 3-9 overall and 2-6 in Big Ten games after Kill’s first season in 2011. The Gophers had the same record the season prior and Kill knew there was monumental work to do in rebuilding the program. In the fall of 2012 Teague and Kill were in agreement to buyout the Carolina contract for $800,000.

The Gophers had been scheduled to play in Chapel Hill, North Carolina September 7, 2013, with the return game in Minneapolis September 14 of the next year. The buyout was criticized by Minnesota media and fans for the cost and also the unwillingness to play an opponent from a major football conference.

Maybe +$400,000? Good news. Add a win and it's great news.

This info has been out there since soon after the TCU game was scheduled. The U finished money-ahead in the swap, even if their image didn't. However, folks like to focus on certain things and the $800K topic never went away b

Sort of true. The amount that they are ahead seems to be going-up. The initial loss became a break even, then $100,000 profit and now $400,000. Most likely due to the cost of tickets going-up and then the cost of attending going-up this season. The "U" took the heat but for obvious reasons didn't want to say that when TCU finally came here to play the gate haul would make up for the loss.

Wonder how long those things were in place?

It's gonna be so much sweeter beating #2 TCU it's gonna happen!
UNC ??

Thanks. You are right that the $ has gone up. Bottom Line is that even tho we didn't lose money on the swap (& actually made $) folks will be talking about how we "paid $800K to get out of UNC" until the day I die.

I has been a joke ever since it happened. I not uncommon for college teams to do these types of things. The hack writers in TC don't have a clue regarding what is involved in scheduling. If they didn't have something to complain about they would be unemployed. Most of them should be.

Go Gophers

Had you never scheduled the UNC games in the first place you wouldn't be out the $800k, hey? It's a big chunk of change to LOSE just because you're afraid to play a team.

Being a MN native that moved to Texas I was excited to hear about the series with the Gophers. We were originally set with a home and home with LSU. After they agreed to play 1 big money maker vs LSU at Cowboys Stadium in 2013 I was worried we wouldn't find a good one to replace.
Next year we start a home and home with Arkansas and I hope Patterson can beat Fat Bielema down like he did in the Rose Bowl. Then we have a home and home with Ohio St. I'm a little worried about that road trip becuase I've heard horror stories about how bad OSU fans are at home. I'm looking forward to a good time in MN because I know Gopher fans are class.

Good luck guys!!

This is a true statement.
If they had just scheduled TCU they would have saved 800k. So to say swapping games saved money is just kind of ridiculous.

Not saying I care at all. Just saying North Carolina has 800k of MN's money for doing absolutely nothing.

You should look up the meaning of a "sunk cost". Once UNC was scheduled it was scheduled. Swapping for TCU made the U $. End of story. Saying we never should have scheduled UNC in the first place may be true, but is also changing the narrative.

You should try to be a little less condescending in your posts.

I'm not trying to change the narrative. I'm trying to point out that anyone who says we "saved" money with the swap is changing the actual narrative. Because reality is 800k was paid to North Carolina.

So maybe I am changing the narrative. I'm trying to take the narrative back to reality.

I guess I assumed the title of the article/thread was the narrative. We made money with the swap.

I guess that's true.

My argument was never that it wasn't true. My argument was that it isn't the whole story.

You're right we didn't save money we made money lol

Great response Killjoy. You are such an asset to GH.

Well we all can't be as good as you. I love all the posts where you say you agree with it. That is what i'm hoping from you some day.

Welcome to my ignore list. I suspect we will both be happier this way.

Probably best since you don't seem to do well with "constructive" criticism. In all seriousness I suspected that this wouldn't end well after you blew a gasket about my comment on your prediction for the Gopher/TCU game. I was surprised it offended you so much since it was, as I recall, what happened.

I am going to end this with little black humor and it is just a joke, and yes a bad one. Here goes --- I suppose also this means that I won't ever be getting of one of your coveted "I agree with you posts." Take care and go Gophers.

I feel like this math is different every time I see it, but the comparison always seems to be the money we made on TCU to the $800k we spent to buy out the UNC series. That ignores an important number. The only way we make money on the deal is if the money we make playing TCU is greater than the $800k plus the money we would have made by playing the UNC series. The fact that we would have made money playing against UNC, and would not have had to pay a buyout to do it, always seems to get lost in the math.

Chicken or the Egg!

They can use that $800k to pay for Lawyers to avoid the death penalty! Or they could pay for real Professors for real classes!
