Sources told Sports Headliners this week that Roger Schipper will not return as Gophers athletic trainer. Schipper completed his 28th season last March as the Minnesota trainer.

Go Gophers!!

This is a really sad day for Gopher Basketball. Roger's tenure with the team spanned at least the entire tenure's of Haskins, Monson, and Smith, and I believe (could be wrong) he was with the team for a year or two under Dutcher. The man had a passion for Gopher Basketball, and despite his stubborn personality, was and is a favorite among many gopher basketball alumni. I personally knew Roger, althought I haven't had the pleasure of speaking to him for a couple years. From what my sources tell me, who are much closer to Roger than I, he was more or less pushed out the door which to me is the hardest part for me to swallow. Roger's service to the program over the last 28 years is unparalleled, and he will truly be missed.

Wow---I remember when he was the trainer at my school RCC (Rochester Community College) back in 1977-79!

This aint government work...new coaches with new ideas, new strength and conditioning et al are going to have different ideas. I wish him the best and look forward to the next generation.

more heartless backstabbing by the new regime....what goes around comes around.

Is that what you call it when a coaching staff comes in and hires their own people? Backstabbing? I'd say it is pretty normal ...

REALLY! The guy has been doing a great job for 28 years...throwing to the curb was not the the norm for the past 28 years pal!

Did they push him out by falsely accusing him of malpractice? Or did they simply tell him they were bringing in their own person? One is heartless backstabbing. The other is not.

Even if this situation was "heartless backstabbing", where are the previous examples?

It's not unusual for a new coach to come in to a program and change everything. I certainly feel for anyone who loses their job despite doing it well, but that's certainly part of the game in major college athletics.

Halverson? Coleman?.....They were obviously forced out.

Understood it's a business, but as mentioned....what goes around.

Was he terminated or reassigned to another position. With the years he has in and being close to retirement , you would hope they would find another position for a couple of years. I went to the same high school so I know he has to be 60 or 61 , so he has to be close to retirement eligibility.

Forced out -- is a new coach coming in and immediately letting the person go. Pitino probably has an idea of the type of conditioning and strength training needed to run the style of offense and defense we are looking at. I am guessing he tried to work with what he had, but either you buy into a vision or you don't. The person being "pushed out" could feel that way simply because they would not conform or buy into the vision of the new coach. In reality they probably had a choice to buy in or not and choose not to -- giving Pitino no option. If you want to create a new culture everyone has to buy in -- everyone. It's hard, but I am guessing he was kept on this long out of respect and Pitino really trying to make it work.

Seriously. This stuff happens with every team, every coach, in every single league. It's sports.

But go ahead an make it look like Pitino is some evil guy who has the wrath of the world heading towards him.

Where was the outrage when Adleman got rid of Kurt Rambis' coaching staff? Oh no one cared then?

Pitino fired him straight up. My dad played for the Gophers and immediately told me he doesn't respect Pitino at all. He said Rog was much more than just a trainer. He had a way with words and every player I repeat EVERY player loved him. I know that many fans loved him as well. What an awful move by little Richie.

That is a meaningless comparison. Rog had been there for 28 years, much different.

Who knew all it took for Pitino to lose the fan base was firing a trainer.

Hate to see what happens when the Gophers lose their first game.

Considering every player in every interview and sources close to the players say how much they love Pitino, I'm going to guess he is alright.

But then again, what a back stabber helping Kimani Young overcome his past and rehabilitate his life, or such a backstabbing move to make sure his players from FIU could follow him to Minnesota an keeping offers to them. What a jerk.

Folks are letting their personal affection for a trainer cloud their judgement. It's sports. It happens. Coaches bring in their own guys. I sure hope you were all crying like this when Norwood "back stabbed" Tubby by firing him. Then again, most seemed pretty thrilled about that move.

How does that change things? Have no long tenured coaches ever been fired?

God, for obtuse. Bringing in examples from pro sports or comparing it to people who are in charge of a program doesn't bolster your argument. Makes one think you have no clue as to how people should be treated and have the maturity level of a 14 year old in your perspective of sports. Don't know the facts, but this is someone who seemed to be well respected as a person and a trainer. Chances are pretty great that getting rid of Schipper will make not one iota of a difference in Pitino's won-loss record here. Doubt someone who did his job for that long under several different coaches is stupid enough to defy a new coach. Seems more like Pitino wanting to make a statement, whatever the hell that is, or else bringing it a buddy he's more comfortable with. Evidently his prerogative but that doesn't make it right.

you all want some wahburgers and frenchcries, seriously this is a joke. As for Coleman being forced out ROTFLMFAO. Coleman was a starter, who came here for Tubby, he clearly had no interest in staying, this offense would've been perfect for him.

Didn't realize you are the representative for every, I repeat EVERY gopher basketball player for the last 28 years. How did you get that job? The interview process must have been tough. Daddy must have helped out.

Not on the same wave length

Roger = Old School

Rich P. = Young Hard Charger

Pitino has the right to create his own work atmosphere.....he has to answer for the results.

Haha good one. Btw I know shick personally. Are you him?

Also all I was saying is that from my understanding Rog was a good guy and to fire a guy in their 60s isn't that great because it will be hard for him to find another job. I agree that a new coach should be able to change it up I was just in the heat of the moment and I feel for Rog.

I never really had an opinion on shipper. I have heard multiple players say very nice things about him over the years. It sucks but everyone doesn't get to go out the way they want to. It's nice that he was able to stay here for so long. I remember how ship used to slip Clem a stick of gum right before tip off every game. He will be missed but eventually things have to change and no one is irreplaceable.

I am not shick but he is one of my favorite gophs of all time. How can you beat that name.

Agree.

Don't want anything I've said to be taken as negatives towards the trainer. I am sure he was a great guy and very good at his job.

It is just a bit irritating when people start taking shots at Pitino for doing what every coach in America has the right to do when they take a new job and every employee of the former boss is never guaranteed a job with the new boss.

It does stink to lose a job you've held for 28 years and it is sad to see a staple of a program go, but saying Pitino is evil for doing it and karma is going to get him is way out of line IMO.

Doing what every coach in America has the right to do? Wrong. You need to learn the difference between support staff and coaching staff. The support staff is hired by the athletic department and consists of the athletic trainer, strength and conditioning coordinator, video coordinator, executive assistants, assistant to the recruiting coordinator, etc.

It is absolutely the norm to replace the coaching staff, but not a support staff. Lets count who Pitino has either fired or pushed out the door on the support staff...
Roger Schipper - trainer
Bryan Bender - video coordinator
Emily sherels - assistant to the recruiting coordinator

Barnyard, sounds like your dad had a similar relationship to Roger as I did. He was the constant between many of the generations of gopher basketball, and the first person I made it a point to catch up with when I made it back. Hard for alumni to get excited about a program when they see stuff like this happen.

This is not normal. Like someone said earlier, what goes around...

All one has to do is look at Rodney Williams to see that the program wasn't up to the level needed in this new era of basketball.

I think his firing kind of sucks too, but it comes with the territory. This isn't cute little high junior high basketball. This is big business. I'm sure this guy is a gem - I have many like him in my past athletic endeavors as well. But - without knowing a thing, outside of what I have read here - it sounds as if Schipper, et al, probably fit better with Tubby than they do with Pitino. We've never had a coach this aggressive (on the surface). It seems as if he doesn't like to play the game, but prefers to get things done - and fast. I can't imagine him having much time for "that's how we've always done it."

And as someone above pointed out - it's his program and he will ultimately be held responsible for the results. He has every right to make this move.

Oh please....Brew got rid of a pair of secretaries almost immediately and replaced them with 20-somethings. Mase got rid of the two longtime equipment guys. Kill got rid of the longtime video guy.

It is 100 percent normal.
