Hopkins girls’ basketball coach Brian Cosgriff is retiring and told players of his decision this morning. He has been the Royals’ head coach for 21 seasons, with seven state titles, 19 Lake Conference championships and 14 section titles. Wishing all the best to Brian who is one of the state’s great coaches ever, and a classy gentleman.

Go Gophers!!

He has done an outstanding job @ Hopkins. I hope Whalen can develop a good relationship with the new coach quickly.

He has done a good job, but truth be told, very very few of his players live in the Hopkins area.

When are people going to stop beating this dead horse? It's 2020. Kids open enroll all over the place and rosters across the region are populated by players who don't reside in the same community where the school is located. Do you think all of the players at Minnetonka or Roseville or Stillwater or St. Michael-Albertville or Wayzata or St. Louis Park or Lakeville North or Park Center or any of the private schools live where they attend school? They don't and there's nothing wrong with it.

The schools you mentioned are not in the same category as Hopkins, they may have a few players outside their area, but not very many. I can tell you that 100% of the Lakeville North girls basketball players live in Lakeville, and has been that way for many years.

And how many of those Lakeville North girls actually live in Lakeville South territory but made the decision to attend North because of their sport? It happens everywhere. Get over it.

There were 2 younger players this past year, but prior to that, not one player lived within the South boundaries. When Hopkins has an all-star lineup of players that do not live within the Hopkins boundaries, it makes for a very unfair advantage. It does not happen everywhere, compared to the Hopkins situation. I said Cosgrove did a good job.

Wild guess: girls want to play with their club teammates, and if it can be at a top school program, all the better.

The state should simply collect school taxes and disperse them equally, statewide to all schools. No more districts. Any student can enroll anywhere, and the school gets the same funding per student. Not allowed to enroll more than X/students per teacher on the payroll. Each student is guaranteed a spot only at their nearest school, but otherwise any school they can get into is up to them and that school.
