Setting Expectations: Andre Hollins

Looks like you missed the part about poise and being a better outside shooting weapon, as well as seeing both players prior to their arrival at their current school.

Unless things change - this is a no brainer. Hollins is younger with a higher upside and quickness. If the competition is close, you have to go with Hollins in the hope that his development curve brings the whole team up a notch by the end of the year. Last game Tubby had Welch playing at the 2 guard most of the time as Ahanmisi is now the PG backup. Things could change, I like a lot of things about Welch, he's got quick hands and long arms on defense and it looks like he can shoot. We may see him used in a lot of ways - sometimes at the 2 with a smaller lineup that moves Hollins to the 3 or perhaps at the point in big lineup.

Julian is the better option to start at point guard this year because he gives the team a better chance to win.

Disagree.

I also think Welch is capable of knocking down threes with more accuracy this year than Dre is.

Disagree.

This team has stars on the inside.

Ralph is not a star.

I would also remind you that Welch has been injured.

He was said to be completly healed up the last two games and has been unimpressive.

They have both played the same number of minutes.. about 17 a game. Andre has taken a lot more shots but otherwise their stats look pretty identical. Combined they are averaging 34 minutes a game, 12 pts, 3.5 assists and 4 TO with a steal a game. Gotta have a positive assist to turnover ratio. Other than that, i'd say you would take what they are giving you all year long with 6 minutes from someone else playing PG.

Neither one is going to end up being a great passer since they are scoring guards first. As long as they make the solid plays when they are supposed to you'll be fine. You don't have to handle the ball like a yoyo to be an effective point at any level in basketball. I give you Chauncy Billups.

The formula is pretty simple for these 2 guys. Feed the beast(mbakwe), make open jump shots when you have them, be strong with the ball and don't turn it over, when shots aren't falling attack the paint to get yourself to the free throw line and defend like hell without fouling too much.

I thought Julian wasn't supposed to be much of an outside shooter either. If he is, is there really that much of a difference?

It's certainly a small sample but they look far from identical in two pretty important categories: points and fg %. Andre has only taken 5 more shots and he's certainly converted his better so far. I do think their numbers will end up looking fairly similar though.

I was glad to see HOOP DREAMS finally post on this website again two days ago... he hadn't posted since 11/22/11. Reminded me of this thread...

I'm certainly not going to make a determination either way having seen him play only 18 minutes of basketball on a bum wheel. Clearly, you have.

While we're here, define difference-maker for me. 1st team All-American? 2nd-team All-American? 1st-team All-Big Ten? 2nd-team All-Big Ten?

IMO a difference maker is in the mold of Burton, Lenard, Rickert, Humphries, Bobby Jackson, Quincy Lewis, Joel P, etc...a all big 10 level player...I just dont think that Welch is that good, that is all. He is a 5-10 minute a game player on a good team.
