Seth Davis: Ben Johnson has done an incredible job with this team. One of the elite coaches in one of the toughest jobs in America.

I get the feeling Coyle started the propaganda storm about 3 weeks ago, and the shills are drumming up support as hard as they can.

Ben is getting year 5.

It's becoming more obvious every day.

Thus the continuing suck that is Minnesota basketball. And a few clowns here will cheer the decision.

Where does Seth Davis live in Minnesota? I thought it was just Ben's friends defending him. Maybe he's black?

I think he will too. Do I agree with it? Only if they
A: make a miraculous run to the NCAA tournament
B: make a run into the NIT of more than 1 game.
Will I agree with it if neither of those things happen and he still stays? No. I'll get it, but i wont like it. The revenue sharing is definitely playing a part in this future decision. If it wasn't for that, there would be zero percent chance he's back without a miracle run after losing at home to teams like Washington, Penn State and Northwestern at home.

Well Ben isnt coming back for free so expect 3.2 mill/ yr for 5 yr contract. That’ll go over like church.

Elite? Your credibility has left the building Seth. Coaches as far as I know are judged by wins and losses.

Poor taste. Doesn't belong here.
Not poor taste at all.

You will never convince me that Ben wasn't hired due to race.

right after the George Floyd riots, we hire another person with no experience.

I can't think of any other possible reason for all the Ben love other than race.

If it isn't race........please fill me in.

I'd love any other explanation.

I don't know if this is one of the "toughest jobs in the country" but I think it's clearly one of the toughest jobs in the conference. There was a survey of Big Ten basketball coaches some years back and they rated this as the second worst job (above only Northwestern - credit to Collins for making his team pretty competitive the last few years).

The location is a big factor. I worked in a field where it was a candidate's market and it was difficult to find candidates who wanted to re-locate here. The fact that hockey is so popular in this state, provides significant in-state collegiate rivalries, and directly competes with basketball for fans, NIL, or other funding is an additional drawback. About two thirds of the conference teams don't even field hockey teams.

Calling Ben Johnson an "elite" coach certainly feels hyperbolic and maybe even "good" is a stretch but he's improved over the years and I don't think he's as "terrible" as his most rancorous critics allege. After all, there are 5 Big Ten teams looking up at us right now and Johnson's harshest critics would have jeered anyone suggesting that situation could be possible three months ago.

Crazy to go 5-4 on the road and 2-7 at home. 2 home wins over top 15 opponents. Almost seems they get energy from larger challenges. Gotta fix the let down issue.

As I said earlier, maybe the Gophers don't like playing in the Barn either.

But, yes, I do think they are a little more energized when they are underdogs. They even seem to be uncomfortable when they get a sizeable lead. Good thing that they'll be underdogs in both of their remaining games.

Budget I believe was also a factor, but that doesn’t mean race was not a factor.
