I know they've been comepetiive in Football, but they just can't compete in Basketball because of their strict academic requirements. Their roster is seriously undermanned and not up to Div 1 standards. Yeah, I know they've had 2 tough injuries but it was a fluke that they ever got Swopshire for 1 season. That rule allowing transfers when going for a graduate degree has been changed I believe. Tradition has been thrown out the window in recent years, regarding teams moving around like free agents...Wouldn't NW have a better chance at success in Basketball if they left the Big Ten and joined a mid-major? Maybe the Horizon or Summit League would be a good place for them? They could build their way up the way up into a mid-major power in 10 years perhaps.

Watching them play Iowa now, I really feel sorry for Bill Carmody as they fell behind 11-0 after 7 minutes. They just don't have the athletes. I think Carmody has done an amazing job to avoid being 2-16 every year with what he is able to get enrolled there.

I would love to see NW start anew in the Horizon or Summit league. They can stay for Football, but I can't help but think they'll never be competitive in hoops.

I'll vote yes, get them to leave and then please invite us to join. I'd love to see Kentucky in the B1G. :)

Well, they - The 'Cats - seem to bedazzle and beat us at least once a year. Simply incredible. I think this year's loss at Evanston was the most mind-numbing of them all. Inexcusable.

That was probably my "Oh $#!+, we're in big trouble" and "it ain't gonna change with the present regime" moment. I actually officially went to the "Let's find a new voice at the top" camp with the home L to Illinois.

Carmody deserves plaudits, not a firing. Its not his fault he can't get recruits to go there. The administation should either lax the standards or get out.

Pretty stupid question pretty sure the B1G wouldn't let a team play one other sport in a different conference. If you are saying overall to leave I would hate to see that they are an original member and have been more than competitive the last 10 years in football and many other non-revune sports. They have a young football coach who bleeds purple and has proven to be a great coach. And believe it or not but the big ten is more than just an athletic conference, academic implications are huge and I love the fact that of the major conferences we are arguably the best academically and Northwestern is one of our strongest.

BS! Academics don't mean squat anymore....If that were the case, all the Big Ten schools would have the same academic standards for admittance.

Tradition is gone and outdated. Teams out east play in the Big East for one sport and ACC for another...It's a joke! Just like Northwestern's basketball recruits. Camody does an amazing job getting the absolute most out of them. But he'll NEVER win a Big Ten Title and they'll never make the NCAA tourney as long as they have to finish in the top 9 of the Big.

B10 regular season wins in the past five seasons:
Northwestern 34
Minnesota 38

If we're looking at basketball and football combined, we should leave before Northwestern.

Are you serious? Northwestern stays. You don't leave a conference because you can't get to the NCAA tournament because your basketball sucks. Their football sucked for a long time and look at them now. I'm not saying they will be at the top in coming years but the Big 10 can help to make them better because competition breeds excellence. Northwestern is good at other sports but their academics standards filters out a lot of athletic talent. Even if they do leave for the MAC or some other conference they will still suck. Its not the talent that's holding them back or the conference, its the academics which isn't a bad thing if you can get someone who cares about their academics while playing sports.

Absurd proposal. NU beats Gophers yearly and competes harder with less than the Gophers. My guess is that they will beat the Gophers in football(10-3 last year with bowl win) and both basketball games next year. They will get their best player back next year in Drew Crawford and Jershon Cobb arguably their 2nd best player as well. Recruits? Jaren Sina, NU point guard signee is a ESPN100 4 star player and Nate Tapehorn is 6'7" sharp shooter in the John Shurna mold. Nice try.

What did John Shurna get them?

When have they ever finished in the top 5 of the Big 10 let alone top 8? Not very often if ever. There's no shame in stepping down. They could become the next Gonzaga or Butler. Better than being 4-14 every year.

Hey moses......maybe minnshould drop from the big 10! The way i see it - we are the only school thats bottom tier in football and basketball. Summit league here we come......

PSU and Nebraska have been bigger BB doormats. Shurna got them a bunch of signature wins. If Kevin Coble(leading scorer and rebounder as freshman, sophomore and junior and 2nd team B1G as a junior) had not gotten hurt and then had a falling out with Carmody when Shurna was a junior they would have made the dance. See how your arguments persuade the B1G commissioners. Nice try.

Funny Kentucky doesn't even come close to big ten academic standards.

And Moses, not true that academics don't matter, the big ten just won't take anyone.

Do you ever think before you type this crap up?

Your resistence is kinda like the last survivors in the 70's movie "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" Just futile! Go to the Summit League, beat up on Western Illinois, the Dakotas, build up your stature and confidence and come back to the Big 20 someday. There's no shame in taking a step backwards to wind up in a rosier future.

When considering the two major revenue sports together I could make a better arguement for kicking us out of the B1G, over the last five years our basketball and football combined are dead last in the B1G.

TOTAL BS! The Gophers are capable of building a very good basketball program and our football program is only behind NW because of coaching hire decisions.

NW will NEVER EVER EVER EVER be competitive in Basketball in the Big, especially not with Maryland and Rutgers coming. They will flounder and reach new depths if they fire Carmody.

Yes, it's exactly like that movie, if there were only one pod person invading and all the humans spent the movie pointing and laughing at it.

They take in about 500 million every year in grants, not sure how much is related to being in the B1G but I'm sure it exceeds revenue of most of the football programs, it's all about money and Northwestern isn't going anywhere.

They can stay for football but not bb because it's too difficult to be competitive? Either you're just stirring the pot or oblivious to reality.

I'd far rather have all the Big10 teams, in fact ALL colleges, have the academic standards that NW has. Kids who are in college merely to audition for the NBA ought to have a league of their own sponsored by the NBA and let college BB be truly student athletes.

Serious question? You do know it's harder to build a competitive football program than it is a basketball program right?

Why is it not his fault now?

Stanford and Duke seem to do just fine with high academic standards. The Northwestern football team seems to do just fine with high academic standards.

Sounds like accepting mediocrity and making excuses to me. But you would never do that, right?

Wow, seriously one of the dumber topics I have ever seen posted on this board, and that (unfortunately) is saying something.

Why in the hell should Northwestern leave? They have been a charter member of this conference since 1896, with their academic stature being nothing but a massive credit to the B10, and not to mention athletically, their relative football success. They have actually played in a Rose Bowl in my lifetime (and I am 46 years old), while us, not so much, so if you're going to play that game, maybe it's we who should leave.

Sorry, but just an awful and nonsensical topic.
