I was at the National Football Foundation (NFF) dinner last night, where they award Scholar-Athletes. When I say scholar, I mean it - the average GPA of the high school recipients was a 3.82.

Eric Decker was also honored there, for being the 4th Gopher football player to obtain the college level award.

Adam Weber was there to support him - and I could not have been more impressed with him. He stuck around, signing autographs, taking photos with people, etc. On a personal note, one of my little friends is a huge gopher fan, and has been battling Leukemia for the past year and a half. She is 7 and is every involved with the organization Hope Kids - which both Decker and Weber volunteer for. I actually went up to him to thank him for his efforts, as she always talks about him, and thinks he is just the greatest. His face just lit up, and was actually apologizing to me for not being able to volunteer more with them with his busy schedule, and talked about how much he loved it, the kids, and the organization.

I know not many will read this thread, but I was very impressed, and wanted to show that some of our players are representing the Gopher Football Program well.

Gopher Lady keep posting positive stories like this I will always read and appreciate them.

Great post and story GopherLady. Thanks!

Go Gophers!!

I love reading stories like this! When athletes do things like this off the field it shows what kind of people they actually are inside! Thanks GL

Thanks, guys - I'm glad some do read the good stuff too! Here's a great photo that was just sent to me of Decker with all of the High School players that received scholarships...I tell you, they were a very impressive group of young men!

One of them is going to be playing for the Gophers, Gabe Mezzenga:

I also believe they said he had a 3.9 gpa. He is the one top row, on the right I recall.

Thanks for sharing this. I had the chance to talk to Eric briefly the other day as well. A class act. If only all of the players could represent the U as well as he does. I wish him the best of luck on Thursday night and next season wherever he ends up.

These are the kinds of athletes we want our kids looking up to as role models. Thanks for sharing the story, GL, and congrats to the guys.

Go Gophers!

Thanks for the post. I enjoy seeing good athletes who are also good students.

Great to hear! Sometimes we only see the athlete on the field and not the person under the helmet. Easy to forget that these players are young men.

Thank You, Gopher Lady, for a very nice story about two very classy young men, Erik Decker and Adam Weber, and the young men, who will follow in their footsteps. The general public doesn't really know how much time these young men volunteer to visit children in hospitals, schools and other venues where children may be encouraged and inspired by their visits.
