I just had a chance to watch a replay of the Pac12 Championship Game where they lost to Oregon. I came away with a better idea of what we'll be up against. Here are some key observations.

* Larry Drew - The Bruins offense is controlled by their PG Larry Drew about 80% of the time. He has a really nice handle and can really pass the ball. His 7.4 to 2.4 assists to turnover ratio is one of the best in the nation. He's a senior and plays like it. He is a pass 1st PG so, I believe Dre has to sag off him a little and force him to make shots. He can make 3's and with a late hot spell he has got his 3 point shooting % up to 45% after starting slowly. But he's only made 29 for the season, so its not the biggest sample size. I say force him to shoot and don't double him. I would rather go down with him having to make shots as opposed to watching our wing players leave Muhammad or Wear open for 3's. Defensively, he's just average and allowed a bunch of open 3's for Oregon. Drew is the guy to foul late in games if we are behind or close. His FT shooting is only 59% for the season.

* Travis Wear is a nice forward. He's not athletic or dominent physically but he has a nice array of shots and shows pretty good form and shooting. He's a decent rebounder, but not great. Averaged just 5.4 for the season. Many Bruin fan lement about his lack of toughness and finishing problems.

* Shabazz Muhammad - Most observers had him pegged as the #1 recruit in the nation. After seeing him play against Oregon and the bulk of the season, I think he's an over-rated gunner. Doug Gottlieb also pointed out that he has 26 assists in 28 games. For a guy getting doubled and seeing so much of the ball, that's an awful number. I checked his box-scores...15 games with ZERO assists. He's a selfish player and once he gets the ball, you know what he's going to do. He's also a bit of a finesse player. He likes to hang out on the wing and wait for Drew to drive and kick to him. Whoever draws this assignement, be it Austin, Joe or Rodney is small doses, CAN NOT leave him or be tempted to help Andre chase Drew around. YOU CAN NOT LEAVE HIM. He shot 40% on 3's this year and can get very hot. I would overplay him and force him to drive in the paint where he's less effective. Keep him from heating up and he might just pull a vanishing act. Force the other guys on that team to beat you.

* Kyle Anderson - He's a nice Freshman and the Bruins best rebounder, averaging 8.4 a game...He's also a decent and gritty defender at 6-9. He can handle the ball in traffic and score in the paint. He's not a great shooter, only hitting on 42%. I'd say, back off him, force him to launch from the outside.

* Norman Powell is the new shooting guard for the Bruins and will get the majority of the minutes vacated by Adams' injury. He's not a great shooter and definitely has hurt them this year. He's capable, so I wouldn't wanna totally leave him open. But we'd rather have him shooting than Muhammad.

* The bench is headed up by Travis Wear's brother David and he's a solid Freshman who can score and rebound a little. Like his brother, he's not overly athletic but certinaly servicable. Tony Parker (This one is kinda portly) is a decent player for them. He has been in and out of Ben Howland's doghouse all season. Looks like Howland is planning to use him more.

Bottom Line: Gopher players need to be aware of their assignments and who you can leave open and cant. Play with passion and energy, make some shots, run in transition and make FT's down the stretch. I came away thinking the Gophers will win this 71-63. I really hope the tempo is fast because we will kill them in transition.

Nice analysis. I don't pretend to know a ton about hoops but I was at the game too and agree with what you wrote. I also think that Shabazz is selfish and whines about the reffing too much instead of playing the game. When I watched Anderson he looked very slow, but still managed to get rebounds and seems to be a heady player. I'm pretty sure that David Wear is not a frosh. He and Travis are twins and they both transferred from North Carolina. I think that Howland is still trying to figure out his substitution patterns after the Adams injury. Sometimes both Wears would be in, at times he would put David in, pull him, and put him back in 90 seconds later. I saw that as odd, but maybe its not. UCLA is beatable, Go Gophers!

i agree... nice analysis.
let's hope tubby sees it the same way..
seems like a favorable matchup for us.. if the zebras let us play..

but i'm scarred from the past.. in these types of games, someone from the opposite team always blows up for a career high.. i predict Muhammad goes for 35 against us as we look at each other and shrug our shoulders

on paper, it shouldn't happen... Austin/Rodney should lock him down with similar althleticism and b1G grit.

but this is why i haven't watch a game for 6 weeks... the easy things are made so hard... and there is nothing left to throw at the t.v.

Was watching the experts last night, on ESPN, make their picks for the tournament, I believe all 5 agreed Minnesota will win against UCLA. I for one don't believe they will win because I don't see anything changing from the way they have been playing away from the barn. I hope I am proved wrong.

Worth noting, Larry Drew was the PG for UNC when the Gophers beat them.

We held the then junior to 2 points (1-5), 0-1 from 3, 3 assists and 4 turnovers in 24 minutes.

Tubby an some player have at least seen the guy before.

I know what you mean...It's kinda hard to see us flicking a switch and just turning on the magic, but here are few reasons for hope:

* Another week has elapsed for Rodney's shoulder to heal and get stronger....if that was still a legit problem I'm not sure.

* Austin H came out of his funk and shot the ball very well in Chicago.

* Trevor, if he can avoid foul trouble should have a double double and dominate Wear.

* Howland is scrambling to figure out the best rotation and minutes for guys with Jordan's injury so fresh.

* Their weaknesses (rebounding and defense) kinda play into our hands.

* And for the love of god, Rodney HAS to wake up sometime.

all sounds good... but..
Wear will be a flop machine.. can Trevor be patient or will he be a bull in a china shop?
Muhammad will hit 3 straight 3's at one point.. will Rodney man-up or shrug his shoulders and look at Tubby?
Drew was at UNC when Harrision Barnes was a Jr.. AT AMES, IOWA.. that's a long college career.. he will head-fake and arm-flail his way to 15 FTs..
etc.

i'm digging a hole out back and sticking my head in it.. see you Saturday.

UCLA will watch the Illinois-MN game see how they doubled Trevor with the pf, as Rodney cannot shoot. I think this will be a key to the game. Can Trevor either make a play before the double or can he pass it out, we rotate it to the open man, and that guy make a play?

Thanks for the good analysis. Maybe a win and then comes Florida.

Rodney is going to have to hit some shots and score for the Gophers to go anywhere. Remember in the NIT last year, he scored over 20 points a few times and was absolutely HUGE in that run. The Gophers need THAT Rodney to come back to life to have any chance. Maybe with him being a senior, he will step up. That's really our biggest wildcard we can play. Rodney must take shots and hit some.

Pretty good breakdown, I have also noticed towards the end of some of their close games there seems to be some tension on the team on who should have the ball. IMO both Drew and Muhammad can be pretty selfish and at times I've noticed the two have seem pretty annoyed at each other when the other has the ball in late game situations. I think Muhammad has some very good skills but he doesn't scare me as much as some players we have already faced this season.

Muhammed is very much like DeShaun Thomas, only a bit smaller and not quite as aggressive or physical. They have similar skills and shooting capabilities...With both, I would over-play the three and make them put the ball on the floor. Thomas is less selfish and a better passer.

Rodney IS the key - as he almost always is. When he's playing, the Gophs are tough to beat.

As far as Trevor, yes we have to assume they'll do to him what the Illini did. If they don't, he'll still have to use his nimble feet to avoid charging and getting into foul trouble. Either way it'll be interesting to see whether we utilize the high-low set and whether they double him on the catch. If so, he has to be ready to catch and score before the double comes. I think the high-low will be more effective than the conventional post feed.

The Adams injury is huge for UCLA. No other way around it.

> Second leading scorer
> Best FT shooter
> He turned it over LESS than any of the other starting five for UCLA all season
> He took the most and made the most 3PT than anyone for the Bruins, and the Gophers defend the 3-ball POORLY
> Getting injured so late in the PAC Tournament, the Bruins have little to no experience playing WITHOUT Adams on the floor.
> They essentially played 7 guys almost all season; that makes losing one of those much more impactful

Other than beating Arizona 3 times this season, and a home OT win against Mizzou, UCLA boasts no notable wins this year. If the Gophers get out to a good start, it could get out hand early. Allow the Bruins to gain some early confidence, it'll be a battle.

For Muhammed, this game and a tournament run (let's hope that doesn't happen) are his chance to elevate his lottery pick number. I've watched him a few times this year and he is a pure shooter and scorer, but Zeb H posted, an extremely selfish player (think Kris Humphries). Let's hope the Gopher's D can keep him from getting on a role. I don't think UCLA can win without him having a huge game.

good-start = hockey-line-substitutions... = loss.

I think rodney and joe will have good games.. when we went on the NIT run rodney woke after getting beat on in the big team... i believe there will be lanes for joe and rodney to run and get easy buckets... which makes this team very tough rodney 2 dunks tomm... this is not a big ten defensive team.

Also UCLA does not put up tons of 3's the gopher weakness.. i really think we win this game
