Schiano: “Rutgers will be #1”

Don't be too quick to laugh. Rutgers is in a talent-rich area, Schiano is a heck of a college coach, and New Jersey high school coaches revere him.
 



I actually saw him give this speech during their halftime basketball game. He has a tough road ahead, but he will be infinitely better than what they had last year. He gives them hope and that's a very good thing.

Schiano did almost pull that off for a week in their Big East days, but rising to the top of the Big Ten East will be much tougher. Even a program with the stature of Nebraska, in the West, found out that this conference is no joke.
 

Nebraska had no present stature only a distant past.
They were refugees from the Long Horn Network that Alvarez let in because he played there and felt sorry for St Tom.
 

Rutgers has a big in-state recruiting base. They are the very definition of a sleeping giant because of that. Right now for the 2020 class, there are eight four-star players from New Jersey. Minnesota has one and Wisconsin has two. Barry Alvarez convincing three-star kids to stay home helped turn around Wisconsin. I know it's a big "if," but if Schiano can somehow convince New Jersey kids to stay home, who knows?

They still had their big, always sold-out stadium, amazing facilities everyone always talked about, national titles in the living memory of their recruits, and were adding the wealth that came with joining the Big Ten. They have simply gotten outmaneuvered since joining by Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Wisconsin, Iowa, and increasingly Minnesota and Northwestern.
 


Schiano can probably bring some respectability back through sheer coaching and recruiting chops, but Rutgers historically has been a total joke from an institutional support perspective. It sounds like their current athletic director pushed several new facility upgrades the last few years to get them on the right track, but they're way behind competition in the BG10.
 

I googled the whole CHOP! thing that is in that clip. Check out this article. Replace "Chop" with "Row", the Axe with an Oar, and the Tree with a Boat, and it's easy to see that PJF is part of the Schiano coaching tree. Will be fun having the two face off in the coming years.
 




In his 11 years at Rutgers they topped 10 wins one time. And that was all before Rutgers joined the Big Ten. I don't think there is any doubt he will improve them from the dumpster fire they are right now but getting to #1 means leapfrogging Ohio State, Penn State, and Michigan and I just don't see that happening anytime soon (if ever) at Rutgers.
 

He's a good coach and did some great things before at Rutgers. It's going to be tough but I certainly see him doing what Kill did here. Being a quality team, being a tough out to play, keeping them in the conversation. I don't see him getting to the upper echelon, but back to a very respectable level I think yes.
 



Rutgers was the worst P5 team I recall seeing this year. Anything they can do to improve would be welcomed by the rest of the B1G. Great Hire.

Nebraska was 1st in the North Big XII the three years preceding moving to B1G.
 

They will still be #2. A big pile of steaming #2, and I don't see it changing.

So I am not the only...Nebraska will never return to their past.

Minnesota. You forgot Minnesota.
 

It's a great hire, he should be saying those types of things.

I'm not too worried about Rutgers being a sleeping giant. Maryland could get scary if that program takes off, but Rutgers is such an afterthought in that area.
 


Where do you think Fleck got his salesmanship skills?? Schiano was his mentor.
 

Rutgers best chance to get back to respectable. He only managed 4 seasons with better than .500 results in Big East conference games.
 

Number 1 in number of players with MRSA infections probably.
