With 20 days remaining until the 2020 NFL Draft, mock drafts have continued to flood the internet. As the popularity of “Build Your Own Mock Draft” machines have increased — especially with many confined to their houses — there seems to be a consensus around everyone that has conducted a mock for the Minnesota Vikings.

That is, taking Tyler Johnson in the fourth or fifth round.

Just like Sonny Weaver Jr. was obsessed with Vontae Mack in Draft Day, Vikings fans are enamored in keeping the Minneapolis native at home. Part of that is the numbers he put up in his senior season with the Minnesota Golden Gophers, leading the Big Ten with 86 catches and 1,318 yards while adding 13 touchdowns. It may also be a leftover wave of euphoria since Minnesota’s best season in nearly a century.

But Johnson’s emergence as an NFL Draft prospect coincides with a need for the Vikings heading into the draft. The Vikings jettisoned Stefon Diggs in a trade with Buffalo and even after the signing of Tajae Sharpe, they have just Adam Thielen, Olabisi Johnson and Chad Beebe on the roster.

An influx of talent is needed and as other mocks have chiseled Justin Jefferson in stone, Johnson could be a cheaper alternative later in the draft, allowing the Vikings to spend their early picks on a cornerback or the offensive line. But will he actually be there by the time the Vikings are on the clock? And could he be available much later than many anticipate?

The answer lies in what Johnson does well as a wide receiver. Pro Football Focus gave him the highest receiving grade (92.2) of anyone in this year’s class and his 3.64 yards per route run ranked fifth in the nation among receivers with over 300 snaps.

Go Gophers!!

Hopefully for his sake no.
Hopefully Johnson goes to a team that wants to throw the ball.
Getting numbers early in his career will be imperative to him having a long one

I agree with this and if Tyler Johnson can have a long career he will help showcase Gopher football. Vikings should take Winfield Jr. early.

The lack of speed turns me off at the next level. Treadwell for example.

Why would they take Winfield when they have Harrison Smith and just tagged Harris, the other safety?

They need help in the trenches and they need a receiver. They need these badly. I will bet they go wr with one of their first round picks.

i think Zimmer is still shopping Harris for picks.

I think Treadwell’s issue is less his 40 speed and more his lack of quickness and route running.

he can’t get separation. I’m not sure Johnson will ever be Diggs, But Johnson reminds me an awful lot of Diggs stylistically but with a little less big play positional. I think Johnson would be well worth a 4th round pick for anyone. A 2nd 3rd round pick for teams that run a lot of 3 and 4 wideout sets.

He is first round material. He can change a game on a dime. Fabulous addition to any roster. I am not a football mind. But, I do have eyes.

In the NFL, I could see TJ becoming more of a slot-type receiver. A guy who can go over the middle, run the slant route (!), or release down the seam for a deeper route.

a lot of guys have done very well in that position without having blazing speed. it's more about route-running, body positioning and catching the ball in traffic - all things that Johnson can do.

As always, it's a matter of not trying to squeeze a square peg into a round hole. anyone with eyes can see what Johnson does well. So, any team drafting him needs to understand that and use him properly.

With all due respect, TJ is not first round material. I like him a lot, but he will probably be drafted in the 5th round range. I hope the Vikings take him.

Like I said, I am not a football mind. By the way, what is a round anyway? Ammunition? A drink? An ordinal number?

I'd love to see the Vikes take Winfield with 1 of their first 2 if it makes sense. Gonna be a stud! Harris would have to go. We really could use corner and O-Line help but come on bring in the Goph

I hope Johnson will be drafted by the Patriots. He would be a good addition to that offense and they are going to need a replacement for Edelman someday soon. No, I am not a Patriots fan but they know how to win.

They couldn't stop the run and have one pass rusher(Hunter). The Vikings were destroyed up front offensively in multiple, multiple, games.

If they go safety with one first round pick, and then something like corner or receiver with the other first round pick..........well, it would be so Vikings!

it’s about the money too. We are already stretched so thin with the salary cap if they think they could bring in a draft pick for significantly less it wouldgive them some more room to upgrade other positions. Winfield in the 2nd would look pretty good back there. Just saying.

All I know Paulser21 is they are keeping the draft as scheduled right now. It may be one of the most joyous sporting events ever, as for the first time in a month, sports are back for a couple of days.

It will be a couple of days to escape what's going on. I plan to be all in.

it’s going to be one of the oddest drafts to watch. It sounds like they will all be at their own team headquarters and there will be virtually no one present for the actual draft. The networks are going to have to get super creative to make it as entertaining of a show as previous years. It could be fun or a complete disaster.

The lack of speed turns me off at the next level. Treadwell for example.

Jerry Rice, Chris carter, Edelman, many others were slow. Speed is not the top requirement. It is getting open, catching the ball and knowing how to improvise. There are blazers out there with alligator arms that other teams can pick. Treadwell has other issues, speed is the last of it.

Who are the slower receivers in the NFL today that make an impact?

Doesn't Edelman run a 4.5?

What is slow? What is "lack of speed"? Running between some cones and running during a route are two different things. Johnson will be just fine. How about Anquan Boldin? Slower that my 83 ma. larry Fitzgerald sucks with 11X pro bowl, slow at 4.7. Excuse the extra curricular but Antonio Brown is no blazer. It is splitting hairs.

Vikings will not take safety in round one. They need a left tackle. Plan on a LT if one is there.

I really don't want to watch TJ languishing under the classic Zimmer team where the offense just disappears for a while....in the playoffs.

Michael Thomas is probably the best receiver in the NFL and he ran a 4.57 I think.
