We want to know what kind of "men" are part of your disgraceful organization.

Here are the ones who at least had the guts to put their names on the website, but there are no doubt several others, like Adam "Cap Gun" Kelly, who are slithering around the shadows trying to destroy our program because Maturi won't hire Marc Trestman:

Crawford Jordan
David Nixon
Wally Pribyl
Steve "Iver" Thompson
Karl Mecklenburg
Ron Johnson
Tom Sakal
Sean Hoffman
Mark Carlson
Jeff Wright
Ken Dallafior
Steve Thompson
"Fast" Freddy Hartwig
Jay Carroll
Terry H. Addison
Mark Slater
Steve Cunningham
Dr. Steve Edling
Jeff Selleck
John M. Williams
Bob Stein
Steve Nestor
Chris Thome
Mike Hohensee
Ivan Zubar
Michael Baker
Alvin Ray "Gopher" Hawes
Bill Light
Mike Steidl

Gopher football needs to be rebuilt. I'm sure Trestman is a good coach in the CFL, but what leads them to believe he can rebuild a football team better than a guy like Hoke or Golden? He has never done anything near what those two coaches have.

I'm not saying that Ball State and Temple are now college football powerhouses, but both those programs were two of the worst in college football until they got there.

What a collection of irrelevant nobodies...

You know I was always going to stay neutral about Trestman. I just didn't know enough to be for or against him, and would have given him a chance to make an impression on me if he was hired. But now, after the actions of this group of ninjas I not only will be extremely pissed if Trestman is hired (he won't), I am going to become a fan of Montreal's greatest rival in whatever that sport is that he currently coaches.

The names on that list aren't necessarily members. The guys running savegopherfootball reached out to former players for comment and then posted them on the site.

GopherHomer - while you do not have to like their methods, I think they're disgraceful too, I would refer to an individual like Karl Mecklenberg as an irrelevant nobody...he had a solid NFL career...many of the other names such as Ron Johnson, Bob Stein (also played in the NFL) and Mark Carlson all were solid contibuting players for the Gophers.

I was just talking smack...nothing too serious. Of course Mecklenberg is an important name. His father actually delivered me into this world.

I wonder how big Bob Stein's role is in this organization. I too think it's a group with an agenda to get Trestman in. I also speculate if deep down Stein desires to be the AD here.

If these guys really wanted to "save" Gopher football, they'd be better off concentrating their efforts in raising some serious cash to lure a more credible coach than Trestman and make sure that coach has a Lexus operating budget.

Did a single player on that list

play for the Gophers under Maturi's reign?

Unless the names aren't clicking, I think the 2 youngest guys on that list are Hoffman and Johnson, and those guys were late Wacker/early Mason recruits by my memory.

Maturi hasn't done the best job, but he did get a stadium built and merge two horrible athletic departments into one mediocre one. I can understand not liking him, but perhaps the opinion of someone who has first hand experience would help? Players who were here from the early 70's through the mid 90's would seem to know little about what it takes to win.

Haven't really paid attention to this group in the past, but in light of Adam Kelley's recent activities and statements, I think this group needs probably needs to be watched more closely and not for good reasons. If anything that Kelley has done or said to other schools is reflective of this bunch's views, then they are a major major problem in this search.

I know people that are part of the SaveGopherFootball group and I can honestly tell you that they are not trying to be obstructionist. Just because a few have their own agenda does not mean the group as a whole wants to destroy Maturi. Maturi has met with these people and wants to meet with them to get their help, because whoever they hire we all need to be behind this hire to take this program to the next level. If they were being that horrible as some like to claim, then why is Maturi still consulting with them on this hiring process.

Honestly, I believe they have their guy lined up and are looking for the right time to make the annoucement. They seem to be throwing a lot smoke screens out to keep the press off guard because whoever does not get the job does not want to put themselves in a tough situation at their own job.

You could be absolutely correct. But in light of Adam Kelley's latest statements, which implicate "former players at the University of Minnesota", I have some doubt about just what is going on with some of the members of this group. I don't want to condemn anybody, but Kelley's statements are a BIG problem and if he is truly speaking for a group of representative individuals (meaning former players), it indicates concerted efforts to undermine the process, which is reprehensible.

I know that Nestor sent out an email to a poster on this board denying any connections with Adam Kelley. But like I said, there is enough there for suspicions to arise.

I can see your point, but at the same time you cant blame an entire group for one moron going rogue. If that is the case, you could say the same thing about the political parties every time that somebody does or says something stupid. You blame the moron, not the group.

The problem I have seen with Save Gopher Football is that they need one spokesman talking rather than having multiple people because something like this happens and you dont know who it is that is talking for the group or what they really want to accomplish.

According to this: http://www.mndaily.com/2010/11/16/boosters-ex-players-criticize-coach-search they are not real organized.

Yes, they need one person to speak for the group, and it would be nice if they actually said something publicly that was supportive of the efforts to hire a coach. They can say whatever they want in private to Maturi and Bruiniks, but they should be supportive in public or say nothing at all.

At this point, they need to decide who is their spokesperson and have that person clear up what their role is and whether Kelly speaks for the group. E-mails to people like me who objected to their tactics are fine, but they need to make a public statement at this point.

Well said.

They are waaaay too late and waaaay too disorganized to do anything constructive at this point. STFU and get out of the way please. Thank you!

We do not have our guy in my opinion and this group is affirmatively trashing Maturi and the University of Minnesota in order to get the "respect" they think they deserve. I corresponded with Joel Maturi within the past day (just a nobody sending him an email to see how the search was going) and he indicated we "will find" a coach that is excited about the opportunity. He also indicated this group of terrorists is doing affirmative harm to the search.

I am no Maturi fan, but he and Bruininks are making the decision. That is reality and that is not going to change no matter how much whining and bitching Save Gopher Football carries on with.

GopherHomer needs to be called out

They are not irrelevant nobodies. Maybe you dont have a sense of gopher history!! Yikes.

You don't honestly think that maturi is going to tell you that they have a coach already, do you?

I guess I'm officially called out now...Like I said before, I was just stirring the pot. They may not be 'nobodies' but as far as the coaching search goes they are (should be at least) irrelevant. Let's allow the professionals to conduct the search unfettered, and all the ex-jocks and insurance salesman should stand to the side and support the decision instead of stumping for their buddy.

What Steve said. I know personally that there was one player that I know that was contacted - he replied back that he would do anything to help the Gophers, and was upset with the state of the program...all the sudden, he's listed as one of the members when he's done nothing with them. I also know they used a few of my excerpts from one of my STrib blogs, even though I have nothing to do with them, except responded to emails trying to find out what they were trying to do. When it was unclear to me, I just backed down.

I certainly wouldn't knock any of our players that gave their blood, sweat and tears to this football program.

Me too. I've been a Gopher fan ever since.

Stein, if I'm not mistaken, is already a member of the state combat sports commission (boxing/MMA) and is a pretty busy guy in his professional life. It isn't for me to say that he wouldn't like to be AD, but it doesn't seem likely that he's angling for it.

If they are undermining the program I absolutely would, which is what this group is doing.
