San Jose State game time set for 11am on ESPN or ESPN2

Because they want to neatly organize their broadcast slots, and college games are longer than NFL games, so they need to space them out further. If the early games start at noon, then the afternoon games have to start at 3:30, and that would be uncomfortably close to getting those games done in time so they aren't impeding the start of the 7 pm game.
So why not just make it a 7:30 game? Northwestern is playing at 8 this week. Since the networks are adding channels which show college football maybe we will see noon or 1pm kickoffs in the future. I would guess that there are more marginal fans out there who would watch a 1pm game after lunch but not the 11am, and they're not going to watch 2 other teams they don't care about after 2:30 so the channels really wouldn't be competing for that viewer.

Didn't the Michigan St. game start at an odd time last week and it was still on the BTN? 1:00 maybe?

TV ratings and advertising dictate everything.
This is true in every sport.
Remember a few years ago when MLB tried to start World Series games 30 minutes before prime time? They lost a ton in advertising revenue and the concept lasted one season.
The networks do not care what times work best for fans actually attending the games. They cater to those watching on television.
I had a graduate course that covered all of this. It was interesting stuff, especially the part of how NBC determines what events to show in prime time during the Olympics.

A bunch of games Saturday started at 5:00 or so. What was up with that?
