I'll always appreciate the guy, he thought he could do it and he couldn't. I don't believe for one second he was fraudulent at any point like a lot of people seem to think, he was just in over his head.

And, without Brew we don't get Kill, and without Kill we don't end up in a situation where we're vying for a young coach who will eventually bring us to some of the highest peaks many of us will have seen in our Gopher football fandom. And I don't think we're at the top of the mountain yet!

Not really remarkable IMO
A lot of guys that are good assistants who don’t work out as head coaches.

A lot of guys who are good assistants because they don’t what the HC asks them to do, not because they are some football genius.
 

If you set aside his chili temperature enthusiasm and general buffoonery during his head coaching stint, given that he has managed to find coaching work for almost 40 years, as an assistant for Mack Brown, Mike Shanahan, Jimbo Fisher, and Dan Mullen, among others, I think it's fair to assume that Brewster does bring something valuable to the table as an assistant.

I don't think Brew intended to deceive anyone. I have no doubt he poured his heart and soul into the job, he simply wasn't qualified for the position. It's not his fault that Maturi was a moron and hired him - what was he supposed to do, turn the job down?

He also exited with grace and class and hasn't said a bad word about the U since he left, which can't be said about all former gopher coaches.

I'll call B.S. on this one. We all thought we were on the right track after beating Juice Williams & Illinois, won @ Purdue 2 weeks later & were 7-1 going in to November.

It definitely went downhill very quickly after that for sure, but I don't believe anyone who says the whole time they always knew Brewster couldn't get it done. There was a small window where we all thought maybe this thing is turning around.
 



I do believe that Brewster knows that he wasn't quite ready to be a head coach at the time after his firing, and perhaps he enjoys being able to contribute to a program without having to be the head coach. He certainty has seen the country.

It's always hard to know for sure but I agree, there's those guys you get as a rental (to some extent everyone is) where it is what it is and there's no magic to keeping them.

I agree that Roof may very well have always longed to be 'home' in the south. Perhaps we could have convinced him to say with a raise and a higher figurehead type role.

Edit: Anyway, it all appears to have worked out.
