Rutgers coach Chris Ash announced Monday that Rescigno will be the starting quarterback going forward, replacing Laviano. Rescigno took over for a benched Laviano in the second half against Illinois on Saturday and provided a brief lift for the beleaguered offense, throwing his first career touchdown pass before tossing a costly interception that was returned for a game-clinching touchdown by the Illini.
Rescigno (pronounced Re-sheen-yo) will make his first start when Rutgers (2-5, 0-4 Big Ten) visits Minnesota (4-2, 1-2) at noon Saturday.
Ash said he doesn’t want to have a “revolving door” at quarterback.
“We need a spark,” Ash said. “We need to get something going offensively. [I’m] excited to see what Gio can do with the offense moving forward.”
The Scarlet Knights had managed only one touchdown in a span of 17 quarters until Rescigno connected on a 3-yard TD pass to tight end Nick Arcidiacono on the first play of the fourth quarter Saturday.
Ash said immediately after the loss to the Illini that there would be an “open competition” for the position of starting quarterback, and he said he made his decision Sunday after watching an impressive performance in practice by Rescigno.
“He had a lot of energy” Sunday, Ash said. “Other players around him fed off of that energy. We threw and caught the ball and did some things [Sunday] in practice better than what we've done on previous Sundays.
“We need to get a spark,” Ash added. “We need to get something going offensively, and the quarterback position is where we'll make that change to try to provide that spark.”
Rescigno was the third-stringer last season behind Laviano and strong-armed Hayden Rettig, and was third on the depth chart heading into training camp.
