Run Game

The slow delayed hand off has aged like mold. Our OL is blown up by the time our RB gets the ball and starts forward. Can we just get a quick hitter, let them hit the hole with some momentum instead of flat footed?

I don't fully understand the running game like I would like to.

Still seemed like we caught Penn St. often enough that the run game worked.

Our run game, vs. Mason's run game (for example) essentially gives the defense an extra second to react.

Would be different if we had a QB run threat,

I dunno, I give the game plan today and the execution a high grade as they moved the ball on the ground and in the air against a top 10 defense in the country. The offensive line played much better today.

We have an amazing RB, and 80% of his carries are with 5 guys all over him.

Mason had outstanding OLs at times but he wasn't a run game genius or anything...

Just watched the first half on the VCR and our running was better than it seemed in person. I think when Tailor gets holed up for a 1 or 2 yard loss just stuck in my mind like Rutgers but that was not the case. Will have to watch the second half tomorrow and see if my thinking changes.

Anywho, that was a very entertaining half of football on all sides, counting PSU too. The commentators certainly were enjoying themselves. Nice to see Minnesota as part of that level of play with the recognition.

Yep, and when Gophs had a QB who was a run threat, the same people said they wished the QB was a better passer.

AAK was not a bad passer, especially in hindsight comparing to the string of quarterbacks since him.

We run a lot of compact formations. Even our WR are not split as wide as they could be. However yesterday we weren’t going to win in the screen and quick pass game.

Every week is a different battle and matchup.

Leidner overall had better passing stats (other than INTs)and was way more productive as a runner.

They have almost identical completion percentage but Leidner was a much better runner.

I don't recall the AAK days very well due to my youth and inattention to things beyond the score of the game but did AAK pummel himself against defenders the way Leidner did? Mitch was an absolute gamer. He gets a lot of criticism from some and he threw the lamest of ducks on occasion, but man, he left it all out there.

Totally agree, it has worked in the past but not this year at all. Seems like Taylor is missing a little something as well, not breaking that tackle that he needs for the big play.

I remember that xray image of his foot before he got surgery prior to his senior season. He was running on that withered thing and running well lol

Right, so he was a pretty good passer if he’s 4th all time. I didn’t imply that he was better than those who came after him, just that there is/was often a perception that QBs tagged as “dual threat,” are not thought of as strong passers. He is right up there with all those guys. And if sports-reference.com is accurate AAK has the second highest passer rating in history.

Hmm, maybe in the first several games. Saw a lot of spread out formations in the last 5-6 games for sure.

Brosmer under center and quick hitters. I don't like Dariius eight yards behind the line of scrimmage.

Was Leinster much better? I don’t recall them dialing AAK’s # in the run game a whole lot, but he had wheels. I wonder how he would have faired in a spread option.
