Rumors?????

Joel Maturi has done a very credible job as the AD at the University of Minnesota. That being said the hiring of a Head Football Coach at Minnesota was his first time making a significant hire as an AD. As it appears he whiffed on this miserably. The hiring of a coach that lacked the qualifications to take over a program that had been lackluster for decades may have been a mistake that does Maturi in.

I makes me wonder what happened or what exactly Maturi saw in or Brewster said or did during the interview process that proceed Maturi to make the decision to hire him. It maybe as simple as looking for someone that was the complete opposite direction of the previous coach in personality and demeanor.

Whatever it was Maturi made the hire. It is on him and he needs to be held accountable for the huge decision on the hiring of Brewster that looks to have completely backfired on him.

Though I do not think Maturi should be fired. If a change is made with the football coach President Bruininks probably will need to think long and hard if Maturi should be the one making the decision who the next coach will be.

I think it is because of that funny green colored paper, though Brews optimism and energy, along with recruiting zeal I am certain made an impression.

Mason as AD

Mason would be a good AD, I think, but I don't know how cozy he is with his new gig at
Marquette.

Didnt he run the timberwolves into the ground or am I mistaken?

Do you mean Glen Taylor. i never heard of a Stein that work for the Timberwolves. I know Glren Taylor has and still running the Timberwolves right into the ground.

Stein ran the Wolves under Harv and Marv when he was the son-in-law to one of them. Then there was a divorce...

That would be a huge shock - but then, the firing of Mason was a huge shock (largely because of the timing). I'm not much in favor of ever firing a coach, much less an AD, during a season. Bruininks should have his discreet feelers out to various top coaches preliminary to a change at the end of the season. Seriously doubt anything this dramatic will happen.

The same thing came to mind when I heard he was speaking out against the current regime. I thought it was pretty rich for a former Timberwolves executive to be criticizing others for mismanagement.

As you gopherholers know, I take rumors to be worth what I pay for them. But I would like to share: Today, my son, whom I would trust with my checkbook, called me. He has a very close friend inside the Gopher Athletic Department. This "rumor" is that on Monday, both Brewster and Maturi will be gone. Any other holers heard anything? I do not want opinions. I want to know if any of you have anything to add to this rumor.
I heard jimmy Hoffa is alive and working at PDQ in Hopkins.

Speaking of rumors, did WLA get abducted by ailens?

remember, Maturi was responsible for extending Monson and then firing him, for extending Mason and then firing him. For the Jimmy Williams fiasco and then the Mbakwe disaster. Last but not least he extended Rooster and he hired the moron. enough of this minor sport loving idiot.

..or was it Col. Mustard, in the Living Room with a candlestick?

Dungy is a pro football man. He will not come here. He has made it clear. Firing the coach and AD is very very unlikely mid-season. It is easier to do in basketball. It is possible only if Brewster resigns and I don't see that happening.

While Dr. Don isn't my favorite because he is such a folksy old homer, he does not strike me as the kind of guy to start these types of threads willy-nilly. If he is posting this, I believe there's something to it. It might not be Monday, but maybe both will get the chop sometime soon.

If Maturi is to go, wouldn't he need to go soon? If Bruinicks thinks his tenure has been a fiasco, or just plain doesn't trust him hiring another FB coach, I think Maturi needs to get the hook now. Maybe Brewster stays on, but the guy picking Brews replacement needs to be in place and ready to search the minute the lights go out for the last time at TCF this season.

Yes, the AD will go first if he is going. The AD needs to hire the new coach.

I'm not a Maturi fan, but was Maturi in Florida the night of the alleged assault and does he bear a not-so striking resemblance to Trevor Mbakwe or something? How was this "disaster" his fault?

I think he's talking about him not letting Mbakwe play while he still hadn't been proven guilty

Even though I think there is a less than 1% chance of this happening tomorrow, it's fun to think about why it might happen. Here are some things to consider:

-By all accounts Bruininks ordered the firing of Mason & Monson so he's capable of a move like this

-Bruininks stuck his neck out to get the new stadium, perhaps he's more than a bit displeased at the thought of a stadium half full of WI and IA fans in year 2? Perhaps he places great importance on the momentum created by a new stadium and doesn't want to lose it?

-By all accounts Bruininks did not do anything to hide his displeasure after the SD game

-Lastly, Bruininks is done in June. Maybe he wants to set things in motion before he leaves and leave a legacy as "the" guy who turned revenue sports around at the U?

I find it hard to believe that with news like this ESPN/CNNSI/Yahoo Sports/ or a million other sport networks hasnt recieved a tip about this. Therefor I think this is complete BS and is not happening. I will believe it when I see it. People, stop mentioning Mason's name...The guy is a deusche and why would you ever want that piece of @#$# back here....Idiots, Gosh

hahahaha, if something like this was going to happen you think a national media outlet would break it?!?! first, someone outside of MN would have to give a sh!t about gopher football for that to happen, currently, they would take the tip and throw it to the trash. if this were to happen a local media person would be the first to break it and the national media types would follow.

anyone who doesnt want maturi gone, must be thickheaded about the football team and entirely oblivious as to anything to do with the basketball tam

Could be on to something here. While there's probably no way that Bruininks is able to leave a legacy as the guy that turned revenue sports around, I would bet there is a little more reverse incentive: he probably REALLY doesn't want to go out as 'the guy' that left football an absolute disaster. At least if he gets the wheels in motion for change, he can avoid that legacy.

The football program is in a real jam right now. And it IS on the administration (even though it's really Maturi, it reflects on Buininks). Four years ago we made the proper decision to remove Mason in order to take the next step UP to the level of WI, and IA. Four years in and unless we get some breaks there's now a real possibility we become the next Indiana due to the amateur way replacing Mason was handled.

Bruininks doesn't want Gopher football to look like Indiana in 5-10 years and have people talk about how it started with the Brewster fiasco on his watch.

Well, if anything's happening today Maturi knows nothing about it. He was just on WCCO encouraging everyone to come out to the rowing event this weekend (not kidding).

He has to stop this, the constant mention and praise of non-revenue sports is nauseating and something fans probably don't want to hear right now.

There's nothing nauseating about the non-revenue sports. I will never go to a Gophers golf match, (or to any golf match), but I want all the Gophers teams to do well.

It's nauseating when it comes in the context of trying to deflect attention away from the failure of the football program.
