Hey Gophers,
Just wanted to stop by to talk a little football in advance of our game on Thursday. I apologize on behalf of some of my fellow MT fans on the board that have gotten a little carried away. I am as diehard a fan as they come, but I try to look at things as objectively as I can. I'm not here to troll, just to gain (and hopefully share) some insight about the other side.
That said, this is what I know at present-
-The Colin Boss/stolen checks issue is dead. Truthful or not, Boss dropped his complaint (not charge, there never was one) because he said he didn't realize Dwight had "borrowed" a check. Either he's playing CYA now for Dasher, or he let Dwight borrow a check and was covering his own when he filed the complaint when things blew up. Regardless, this is a dead issue.
-I am convinced there are no legal issues in play. That said, we pragamatists in Murfreesboro still have an eye on the NCAA. Ultimately, from the info we have I don't think the NCAA will pursue any further action. Massaro (our AD) immediately brought Michael Glazier on board to do some in-house snooping. Glazier, if not mentioned on the board already, is a former NCAA investigator who operates a private consulting firm for universities that are concerned with running afoul of the NCAA. He is currently working with UNC as well on their issues, and is a valuable asset for a program making a legitimate effort to stay clean. As of yesterday afternoon, Massaro, Glazier and Stockstill were all heading into Dr. McPhee's office for a meeting, all smiles. Just FWIW.
-Regardless of whether he broke the law or not, whether he sits or not, etc...from everything I have heard over the last few years Dwight has a problem. My two primary concerns in this situation are for the long-term success and image of our athletic department and unviersity first and foremost, and for Dasher's well-being. I hope that this incident serves as a wake-up call to him, regardless of the outcome, and I hope that he doesn't have other similar issues lying in the weeds.
-That said, I have seen and heard enough of our AD and coach that I trust them implicitly with the task of upholding the standards I expect from Middle Tennessee. Massaro and Stock truly are men of character, and I believe our university is largely reflective of that. If this matter is handled strictly in-house (which I believe it will be), I think they will make the right decisions.
-My own personal opinion? If the information we possess now is accurate...Dasher met Donnell through his friend at the V.A.... and the man lent him $1500 to gamble...and Donnell has no ties to MT....Dwight should sit for the first two games. Under this scenario, no laws or NCAA policies were violated, but extremely poor judgement was excercised and MT has taken a big PR blow. I think a punishment of two games fits the "crime", so to speak.
Thoughts? I can't wait to be able to talk about the game itself.
