Roy Williams is retiring

Could we fire Johnson and convince Williams to coach the Gophers for 10 years. He is retiring pretty young! ;)

Wes Miller, I'd bet on him
The big names listed so far have to be in the running but this would be my bet as well. When Wake was hiring last year, Miller was in the running (he has some connection there too) but there was a lot of concern he’d leave for UNC once it opened up.

A place I could see Eric Mussleman going.

Anyone have any good guesses/suggestions on his replacement?

Miller TIme baby @ Wes Miller

He's had ten years with UNCG, voted best coach under 40 by ESPN and was on a championship team for Roy as a starting PG - he's the next Fleck, Nate Oats, etc....IMO.

He ain't no Matt Doherty!!

UNc's provincialism makes MN look like like a D3 team by the comparison; they always want a Carolina Man. I saw an interview with him and they interviewed Roy as well and Roy encouraged him to walk on from James Madison when he decided to transfer (he was considering Penn or Colombia), as thier staff was so impressed with him when they got to know him in high school, that he told him while he couldn't guarantee playing time, he would groom him to be a coach (they knew Miller as he prepped with Rashad McCants and he used to talk them - they called Miller's phone as McCants didn't own one at the time).

I'd take this record in a heartbeat -

You think there was no chance that, as far as Roy honestly knew, "Afro studies" was just an "easy class" that students often took where they didn't have to do much work to get good grades?

Obviously the class went far and above that, to an unacceptable level.

Just wondering if there was any evidence that Roy knew exactly what was going on ... or if it was just a rouge professor who thought that Black students were being taken advantage of and so this was her way of "giving back" to them or some such?

The truth can be mixtures of these, as well. Doesn't have to be binary (and usually isn't).
I agree, the truth is a mixture. I don't know if there was any evidence or not, but I find it very hard to believe that someone in Roy's standing at UNC, that he didn't know what was going on. Just like Clem knew what was going on at Minnesota.

Roy got away with a huge academic cheating scandal at UNC. Lost respect for him because of that.

Until the NCAA does something about it (which they won’t), we have to accept that cheating is the way of the world at the elite level in the sport. Wooden cheated, Roy cheated, Coach K continues to cheat, Self cheats, Calipari cheats, I mean the whole SEC cheats whether the coaches want it to happen or not, Izzo’s no different than the rest of these guys so what’s there to do?

For better or worse, I’ve come to accept it. When there’s billions of dollars to be made, the idea of amateurism goes out the window. If a coach is going to make generational money, they may look away when a booster hands a recruit a dufflebag of money. If Duke in the final 4 makes us a little more money, we might see favorable officiating. It’s business and unless money is taken out of it, this is the way of the sport unfortunately.

If we all didn’t shield our eyes to certain aspects of the sport, we probably wouldn’t enjoy it as much would we? So I still like Roy

Won't happen though he probably deserves it. It will be a black hire. Stephen A Smith (idiot) was talking about how it would be disgraceful if it wasn't and mentioned some other coach that no one has ever heard of being fit for the job because he checks off the tenure and diversity boxes.

So does Ole Roy sign the retirement papers himself or does he have someone else do it for him?

Unfortunately this isn't really accurate. The truth is much worse than this. The investigation and resulting report fully admitted the whole thing was a farce, but it was a farce that "benefited" all students, not just athletes.

Fake classes in some "social sciences" are a big part of academia now. It would almost be unfair to not let the athletes in on the joke. If school accreditation was still an actual honest thing, UNC(along with many, many colleges, the U of M included) would have faced the consequences, but that is not the world we live in.

Granted that you're closer to the truth than people who want to believe that the UNC athletic department concocted a special class just for athletes.

But you're still wildly wrong and taking it way too far in the direction you went in.

It was a rouge professor, who thought she was doing something she felt was right, and got away with it for far too long. Nothing more.

Not saying the athletic department shouldn't have received stiffer penalties. Not saying that no one in the athletic department knew about it and chose to look the other way. They probably did, at some level.

But people saying the school (a top medical research university in the country) should lose accreditation??? That scientists researching cancer treatments, and have literally zero to do with athletics, should lose their federal grants to continue their work ... because of an athletics scandal??? (if they lost accreditation, PI's there would lose the ability to receive federal grants)

Just silly.

Will be interesting to see if they hire Hubert Davis. Would be an very equivalent hire to ours, and in line with the current cultural "moment" these days.

- played at UNC (and in the NBA)
- assistant coach under Roy since 2012
- Black

Checks many boxes. Just not the "has (any) head coaching experience" box.

"Old Roy" ran a very academically crooked program with academic fraud that made MN's look like kindergarten.
The NCAA bent over backwards to find a loophole that let them escape punishment like MN got.

Pete Thamel at Yahoo Sports: Top 5 Candidates to Replace Roy Williams at UNC

Tony Bennett, Virginia
Chris Holtmann, Ohio State
Porter Moser, Loyola Chicago
Hubert Davis, UNC assistant

Wes Miller, UNC Greensboro

If they go with one of their assistant coaches, Hubert Davis would be my guess. I saw him up in Minnesota with Williams watching high school games a couple of years ago.

I'm shocked they didn't go with a coach with head coaching experience....he must have been an associate assistant head coach or something....
