Rossow: Gophers unwavering confidence in Leidner is bailed out this week by Smith

Sawvel's kids Martin, Coughlin and Winfield might be the best 3 Defensive Freshmen in the Big Ten. If you rewatch the games watch those three move in and out of coverage. Super smooth. 2016 Mn was 1 decent QB from being a well rounded above avg Big Ten Team.

Excited for all 3 of them. Martin did a great job sniffing out a screen pass in the 2nd half.

As other have said, Carter caught the ball in his elbows when he dove. I'm not blaming him for diving to make sure he gets to the ball but it looked as if he kept running instead of diving it hits his hands.

I still am not buying this.

Given our run/pass ratio I completely disagree with the idea that our staff has any sort of great confidence in Leidner. Occasionally you have to pass the ball, so sometimes we do.

1. Doesn't matter if ML7 is good or bad. Only matters if he is our best option. Simple concept that few seem to be able to grasp.

2. Add me to the list of people that 100% believe EC9 did NOT need to leave his feet on that catch. Should have been 6 as thrown.

True. Really strange all the times the staff doesn't trust him then all of a sudden they try to go 80 yards in 17 seconds with no timeouts

People keep saying this. Is there anreplay video anywhere online. Looked and couldn't find.

There probably is no way to know for sure. I could be wrong. But I don't think it is outrageous either. Some have made it seem like it is (not you).

I looked at it just now and he probably could have kept his feet but he was focused on making the catch. A receiver 4 inches taller or a tiny bit more coordinated or sure of himself takes that to the house. Not criticizing Carter-thinks he's one of our best.

Pretty good for a DII QB!

This is where most miss the point. Minnesota has never been a great program for a QB. There really isn't a good program in the B1G for QB because the style of play in the conference requires running the football and playing defense. Name that last QB from the B1G that was worth a darn in the NFL. So Leidner is what the B1G requires.

Personally, the worst thing that happened prior to this year was that the ESPN mock NFL draft "expert" claimed Leidner would/could be a first round pick. It got many Gophers fans' hopes up, with a majority thinking that ESPN knew something from watching summer practices. But Mitch is still the same: works hard, gets teammates to believe in him, makes some good plays, makes some poor decisions, doesn't throw the best ball. But he is who he is, and we don't, and I repeat, DON'T, have anyone better in the program to take the helm.

If anything has been disappointing about this season, it has been that it just seems the Gophs can't have all three phases of the game show up on Saturday. There is always one of them that didn't make the bus to the field and it makes these weak-opponent games a lot closer than what they should be.

High expectations but ... what do you do, never have him throw?

Mitch blew it on that play, but otherwise he had an alright day.

As I said on another thread, the interception throw was stupid, but almost every B1G team would take his stat line and performance from yesterday. If not for the pick it is more than just alright.

it matters. it truly does matter.

HOFer Drew Brees was pretty good at Purdue. Trevor Semien from NW is the starter for the Broncos. Kirk Cousins is the starter for the Redskins. All that being said your point is fair. BTW there are a bunch of NFL QB's from Texas where playing that position is a year round job and seven on seven is the norm in the summer.

Thanks. That's what I thought I saw.

I think most would agree that Tom Brady has done OK in the NFL. But really this endless complaining about Mitch when the coaches believe he gives us the best option to win is pointless.

Figured someone would point out a few QBs from the B1G. However, Brees is once-in-a-lifetime QB who played 4 years for a Top 25 program (surprise, surprise). Cousins is kind of the same story (4-year Spartan) with MSU but the jury is still out on his NFL career. And Semien won the Broncos job by default and who knows if he'll keep it next year.

My point was understood by HoustonTXGopher. But on the whole, there are so many Gopher fans that think we should land a future hall of famer when B1G programs are not known for being QB hotbeds. It's just not realistic with college football right now. Minnesota would need like 10 straight years of Top-25 rankings to even have a shot at a QB of such caliber, and that's not a guarantee. Is it a bummer to see Leidner's regression? Yeah, but we weren't in the ballpark of recruiting a future No.1 draft pick in the first place when ML7 committed to the U.

I can name two. Brees and Brady

I agree except for the regression comment. He's been remarkably consistent.
