Could be wrong but I read this as UCONN "we are set, we got Karaban back but it cost us a lot, we don't have a lot of time or money, so getting a 3* who helps us with his brother, call it a win" I don't think he goes there had his brother Karaban etc arent back
I'm sure his brother being on the team doesn't hurt but I don't picture UCONN as a team that burns scholarships on guys that can't play out of sentimental value. Historically the Gophers always offered the crappy older brother hoping the younger star brother would follow. Seeing UCONN and Gonzaga wanting Ben's recruits is eyebrow raising nonetheless.
This one feels odd to me. I think it is more to keep his older brother happy but not sure. I wasn't bummed when he decommitted and I'm still not, just more so confused.
The rules are moving to 15 scholarships with no walk ons. Many coaches don't want 15 guys who expect playing time on their team. Ben didn't use all 13.

His talent ID was very good and a fair few guys he got in on early have turned out to be great players/some NBA guys. Had Ryan Dunn on campus before he went to Virginia, Danny Wolf visited if I remember, obviously Cam Christie was quite the pull, won’t be a popular opinion but Ben might have been fine if not for NIL. Not great but his lack of experience likely cost him and his inability to bring his vision to fruition due to that inexperience did him in.
Like pretty much 99% of fans, I was not a fan of the hire but in listening to him talk in some of the interviews he did after he got hired, the things he was prioritizing and the influences he talked about having were actually very similar to what Niko’s talked about in offensive and defensive versatility, skill and shooting. Wanting to take a lot of influence from the Big East which the Big Ten is eventually going to evolve into once we move on from the Stone Age. Thought what he was talking about building sounded far more sustainable than really anything Pitino wanted to do in his tenure.
Like with Pitino, I could see Ben doing well at his next stop just at a lower level where he can build a program with less pressure and not be swimming with the sharks when it comes to competing for recruits.
I don’t think Ben’s problem was recruiting the high end talent. He did pretty well with that. His issue was recruiting role players that could contribute and then having a plan on how to use those players. I think a lot of learning how to create a culture where winning and everyone playing their role and being able to accept their role comes from head coaching experience.
