I'm not entirely sure if this is correct. I thought the Orange had to take the highest ranked team from B1G/SEC/Notre Dame BUT the conference could only be picked a maximum of 3 times between 2016-2025 (and we've been picked twice now). So if Minnesota were ranked high enough there might be a slim possibility, especially if Alabama loses to Auburn.
I've been wrong before though....
Thanks, I was wrong in a few aspects here. Let me correct myself, based on the official published selection procedure here:
https://bigten.org/documents/2019/10/7//2019_Bowl_Determination_Procedures.pdf?id=6568
- as you said, the Orange is required to select the
highest ranked of Big Ten/SEC/Notre Dame that are available (Rose and Sugar have a higher selection priority)
- so if Minn was the highest ranked team that was available, after the CFP (top 4) and the Rose and Sugar had selected, as far as I understand it, the Orange would have to select us. That's because, as you noted, we haven't hit our limit of three selections over the 12 years of the current CFP deal (2014-2025).
- if a Big Ten team is taken for the Orange, then the Citrus is off the table, but if the BT doesn't get the Orange then the Citrus is on
- two pertinent pieces of language exist in the document linked above, and apply to both the Citrus and the Outback:
1 - "For all non-CFP partners, bowl will request a Big Ten school, subject to Conference approval based on selection parameters."
2 - "Will feature at least five different Big Ten schools during the six-year agreement."
- The six year period in question would be the 2014 - 2019 seasons. And for those seasons, the Citrus has only selected a Big Ten team three times (Minn 2014, Mich 2015, Penn St 2018). So as far as I read it, the Citrus would be free to select any Big Ten team it wishes, including any of those three, for the 2019 season, if the Big Ten does not get the Orange.
