Rodney Williams WILL be in the College Dunk Contest

Yeah Rodney's draft stock could only go up having been in the dunk contest. He's unlikely to even get drafted at the moment.

I agree. But why would you ever pass up any chance to get some national PR? This could have helped his marketability with European clubs.

Thanks, Rodney for that signature alley-oop slam against Indiana.

@nadinebabu: Just heard the reason why Rodney Williams isn't in the dunk contest, is because his agent advised him against it. #Gophers

Go Gophers!!

Odd...I wonder what the reasoning of it was, cause I just assumed he'd want him to get that kind of exposure. Perhaps his agent is worried about the stigma of being "just" a dunker?

Is Rodney going to Portsmouth? If so, then it makes sense. He should be getting his game ready for that camp working on his weaknesses instead of practicing dunking.

Nah they cut me from the team. Sore subject.

My apologies for being a fan of one of our players. Someday maybe you can teach me how to be a real fan.

No problems with you being a fan, but I can't see Rodney as an all-time favorite in light of the legitimately good/great players who have come out of the U of MN and played in the NBA. There are so many fundamental flaws in Rodney's game that I can't put him at a top level. I will give you this, however, Rodney can jump and dunk a basketball.

Do we know if Rodney has fully healed from his shoulder injury? I could see not participating if he might aggravate the injury or if the injury limited what he could do in the competition.

Why do you care if anyone lists Rodney as their favorite player? Seriously, what a stupid thing to question.

u guys have to be kidding right? the kid gave his heart and soul to this team its tubby's fault he didnt utilize him better he should be in the nba. u can blame tubby for not letting him shoot more.. we have any other coach rodney wouldnt have a leash of 1 missed three per game all year.. u haters need to grow up and even be proud he chose us over the offers he had.

I agree. I'd take a fundamentally sound, no-frills player over a Rodney Williams any day. His lack of defensive skills far outweighed anything he did on offense. Unless, of course, you consider the occasional spectacular dunk (and he had some great ones) the most important skill in basketball.

I agree. What good does ragging on Rodney do at this point? The past is the past. Let's support him as moves on.

Haha yeah, I wasn't aware there were any rules in determining what players are allowed to be on someone's all-time favorites? So Rodney's his, more power to him. I've enjoyed watching him play these last four years, even if sometimes he could be frustrating. But there were also many games that we would not have won without him, so in my mind, that means he contributed very positively to the U. Let alone the fact that he was a model citizen and representative of the University.

But nah, he wasn't as good as we wanted him to be, so let's just hate instead lol

Well said, I never understood the comments about Rodney basically being a "one trick pony" and many trashing him. He received his degree, never was in any trouble, and had a nice career. Blake hoffarber was a "one trick pony" and I don't recall many people ever trashing him the way ppl trash Williams

You obviously don't understand what a favorite player is. One of my favorite Twins growing up was Steve Lombardozzi, a career .233 hitter.

If the expectations weren't so high on Williams out of high school, I think most would look back and say he had a solid career. He provided a lot of highlights. He was fun to watch at times, but also frustrating at times. It is what it is.

Yes, a favorite player doesn't necessarily mean an all-time great player. How else can I explain Townsend Orr being one of my all-time favorites? I just always liked his energy, even when he'd take shots that made me pull out my hair.

All the Miles Tarver fans of the world would agree.

Haha, that's ironic because there were plenty of posters here at the time saying Hoff was garbage, very limited, not starter quality, etc. All baseless in my opinion....seriously how many games would he have won us this year (starting alongside both A. Hollins?)

@NSandell

Talked with Rodney Williams. Said he has not signed an agent. Pulled out of dunk contest b/c "I had to deal with a few things here."

I don think Rodney was garbage, I think he was a role player and I hold the same opinion with hoff. Both had very nice careers and but both had some limits to their games. I would just prefer "fans" to not rip the guys that represent our university and our fanbase. I guess I'm in the minority

I agree with you that Tubby's tutelage did not help Rodney reach his potential.

You must have been sleeping when they explained participles in elementary school...

You English majors crack me up.

What is a "participle"? Us non-literary folks need to know...

I wasn't an English major. I am a practitioner of the language nonetheless.

As for the latter, Google is your friend.

Jason Kubel is one of my favorite twins, two of my favorite gopher hockey players were Troy Riddle and Gino Guyer

its sad when people are let down by a guy who was heavily involved in 4 of the best teams we have had since the 97 disaster and put us back on the map but he gets *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# because of tubby.. some fans need to figure it out
