I wouldn't be shocked to see this kid still commit to the U. I've heard people who seem to know make suggestions that there might be another HS QB added to our recruiting class and now MV at FBT said something to make me think that Gregory might still be added to this class (he said something like the U is likely going to announce in a couple days the signing of an offensive player who will surprise a lot of people that he is still being recruited and still interested).

The only position on offense that would really surprise anyone is QB and Gregory is a dual threat QB we had/have been recruiting pretty hard.

I would actually kind of like adding him. He is a tall kid (6'3" 190) and he could certainly move positions. He already has offers from Illinois and Kansas and he seems REALLY athletic.

I don't know if you were being sarcastic but it won't be Michael Floyd and it wouldn't make sense to call it recruiting if Henderson wanted to come home.

I'd be pretty pumped if Gregory committed but if he does I think we're going to have to put an embargo on making fun of Mason's 6 QB class.

I remember that class...the reason they recruited 6 was 2 fold...one they were seriously lacking in QBs and that QBs are considered more flexible athletes and due to their intelligence and athletic ability could play other positions.

I was pretty tongue and cheek with my comments. I'd have to imagine most of these QB's will eventually switch to another position.

But since we're talking about it and you remember the infamous 6 qb class, did many of those kids switch positions?

Let's see ...

John Carlson - Moved to linebacker
Adam Ernst - Stayed at QB
Mike Maciejowski - Stayed at QB
Tony Mortensen - Stayed at QB
Andre Sloan El - Stayed at QB, but transferred I think (he's with the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks now: http://www.lvsteelhawks.com/team/roster.html)
David Wess - Did he even make it to campus? He ended up at Cincinnati I think. Edit: yep, moved to DB: http://www.gobearcats.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/wess_david00.html

And I believe John Carlso would have stayed at QB had he not injured his shoulder.

Thanks guys. I think it'll be really interesting to see who develops into our future QB's from this class.

Yeah, I think what made that 6 QB class so strange is that it had little versatility.

Sloan El could have certainly played another position. Wess obviously could have been moved (was).

However, I think it would be hard to argue that any of the other 4 could really play another position.

You might be able to argue that Mortenson could have bulked up to play TE and maybe Carlson could have played somewhere else because he was pretty athletic. But it wasn't as obvious as guys like Gregory and even Foreman who could certainly move to WR or DB.

Mitch Leidner is a pretty big dude and certainly looks like he could become a Big 10 TE (even attended camps as a TE).

Nelson doesn't offer much versatility (I don't think). He doesn't seem like a Big 10 Defensive Back or like he could get big enough to play TE/H-Back.

Wasn't Marcel Jones (?) from Shakopee in that class of QB's as well? I think he beat a kid so mercilessly at a party that he basically had to transfer out?

I think Marcel Jones was the following season.

Marcel Jones was one of the strangest situations i've ever seen in HS football. It's probably because I was pretty familiar with the circus surrounding this kid, and I usually don't know a thing.. I had seen Marcel Jones play a ton of times and he actually started at Simley as a FR. I kept reading about these gaudy stats he was putting up, however, every game that I saw (a few, my gf at the time's bro was on the team and we'd go to a few games a year), he didn't do a thing. It wasn't even that he was bad, he was fairly athletic and seemed to have a decent arm, but Simley was just really bad. However, i'd always read in the paper the next day that Jones supposedly had 205 yards passing and 95 yards rushing....it never seemed to add up. So after a few years and noticing this about 10 times, I started asking a few people I knew who were coaches in that conference. Well, i guess it was a known fact that the Coach of Simley would inflate his stats when he sent them into the newspaper in order to generate buzz around this kid. Shockingly enough (sarcasm) that coach was also his father, who coincidentally coached at Simley from when Marcel was a FR until he graduated...and then he left. I guess you could see it online at places like maxpreps (this was before youtube highlights were big or anything) and Marcel would be credited for throwing for 225 yards and rushing for 95 and the opposition's books would only show that they gave up a total of 195 yards TOTAL.

Now, this is all people yapping and I have no idea how much of it is true (I wouldn't have ever even brought it up if it hadn't ended the way it did for Jones and it wasn't so long ago), but the entire rumor about Wisconsin offering Jones was supposedly ficticious and made up by his father in order to get the Gophers sniffing, and supposedly the U took the bait.

So needless to say, I was never surprised when Jones got into trouble and couldn't play at the U (didn't he get into a fight with that JuCo RB from Roch?), and I was even less surprised that he wasn't a Division 1 QB (or even able to crack into being the backup at Northern Iowa).
