Path of Least Resistance to Weakling Wednesday
It appears 7 conference wins (perhaps only 6) will be the number needed for teams to insure themselves a spot in the Big Ten Tournament. The Gophers’ smoothest path to Weakling Wednesday seems obvious. Back-to-back home games Feb. 22 vs. Penn State and Feb. 25 vs. Northwestern (minus out-for-the-season starters Brooks Barnhizer & Jalen Leach) have to be wins. HAVE TO. Win those two and then it’s just a matter of picking up one other win (they’ll be underdogs in the other 5) somewhere along the line.

Conquerors of Champions?
The Gophers hold victories over three opponents leading their respective conferences: Omaha (Summit League); Yale (Ivy League); and Cleveland State (Horizon League). And then there’s Michigan, currently in a 3-way dogfight with Purdue and Michigan State for the Big Ten regular season title.

Nothing But Blue Skies vs. the Big Sky
Three of St. Thomas’ 10 non-conference victories have come vs. the three teams sitting atop the Big Sky standings, co-leaders Northern Colorado & Montana, as well as (tied for) third-place Portland State. Interestingly, in their fourth season of Division 1, the Tommies have yet to defeat a NCAA Tournament qualifier. There’s a decent chance that will change in March with those wins over Northern Colorado/Montana combined with a Summit League win over SL kingpin South Dakota State.

Potential Bid-Stealing Conferences
Several conferences are looking like potential “bid-stealers” if the conference favorite(s) fails to win the conference tournament:

American: if Memphis loses
Atlantic 10: if VCU loses
Big West: if UC-San Diego loses in title game to UC-Irvine
Missouri Valley: if Drake loses
WCC: if someone other than Saint Mary’s or Gonzaga wins it

Beware of the Championship Week bid thieves!!!!

Not A Great Bubble (again) This Season
In recent years, the bubble more often than not has been weak. That's likely the case once again this season. How else can I explain returning middling North Carolina (14-10, 7-5 in a weak ACC) and its 1-9 Quad 1 record to the Field of 68 this week, with “first 4 out” teams VCU (zero NET top 50 wins) and SMU (zero Quad 1 wins) right there waiting in the wings?

And to think two seasons from now, you can bet the farm the tournament will expand to 72 or 76 teams, adding more garbage to the end of the bracket. Yuck!

A Shortlist, But There Are Plenty Others Out There
A compilation of some names thrown out there for a Big Ten job, if one were to become available. I would have no issue with any of these guys.

Bryce Drew (Grand Canyon)
Andy Kennedy (UAB)
Chris Mack (Charleston)
Ben McCollum (Drake)
Niko Medved (Colorado State)
Ryan Odom (VCU)
Micah Shrewsberry (Notre Dame)

There are plenty quality sitting head coaches who’d love a shot at a Big Ten job. It doesn't have to be one of these dudes (in case that needs to be said).

Deep (College Hoops) Thoughts, by Buzz Studley
Duke is really good, and Cooper Flagg is living up to his billing. But despite being in my preseason Final Four, I now can’t see the Dukies making it to the final weekend. They’ll get tripped up by a veteran team, perhaps even in the second round. Playing in a weak ACC where they’re rarely challenged probably isn’t the best prep for the one-and-done meat grinder of March Madness.

I
So Shrewsberry is going to leave the b1g for n.d. then decide I want to go back to the b1g
I don’t know, Coyle would have to ask him.

It’s been a so-so 2 years for Shrewsberry in South Bend, but I still really like him. He got Penn State to the NCAA Tournament. That’s enough for me. And he has a kid that can play ball.

Field of 68 Names for Indiana Big Ten Job...many different names...
1 Brad Stevens
2. TJ Otz
3. Scott Drew
4 Billy Donovan
if they say no, which are all likely...
Big push for best possible candidate to get Indiana to a final four...Rick Pitino
Chris Beard would take the job if they ask
Dusty May if he'd leave Michigan
other candidates to ask:
Mark Byington,
Randy Bennett
Ben McCollum
Todd Golden
Mick Cronin
didn't think Texas Tech coach would leave Texas but another name they mentioned

I know we are in the same conference as Indiana and then the basketball comparisons mostly end but can't the Gophers go a little higher on the ladder and approach at least the bottom group of the above list? I like Ben McCollum but I think Iowa goes after him unless they don't want to fight with instate Drake?

For the few folks on here interested in the Summit League and/or the team we shall not name, here's how their league tournament is shaping up through Feb. 11. Two big games this week, league-leading Omaha @ 3rd-place South Dakota State on Thursday, then Omaha @ The Team We Shall Not Name on Saturday night in St. Paul.

If Summit League Tournament were held today:
March 5 (1st Round)

#8 Oral Roberts (2-8) vs. #9 Denver (2-9)

March 6 (Quarterfinals)
#1 Omaha (10-1) vs. Oral Roberts/Denver winner
#2 The Team We Shall Not Name (9-2) vs. #7 Kansas City (3-8)

March 7 (Quarterfinals)
#4 South Dakota (6-4) vs. #5 North Dakota State (6-5)
#3 South Dakota State (7-3) vs. #6 North Dakota (3-8)

March 8 & 9 (Semifinals/Title Game)

In a perfect world, The Team We Shall Not Name ends up on the opposite side of the bracket of South Dakota State. The Denny Sanford Premier Center is pretty much a home-court advantage for the Jackrabbits, teams likely want to avoid the Jacks as long as possible.

Is Omaha Ben's best preseason win of his head coaching career?

@ Miss St. was good in Year 1, but I believe they were NIT that year.

Mississippi State definitely the best non-conference win under Ben. Bulldogs went 18-16 and lost in first round of NIT. Good memory!

Gophers actually had back-to-back road wins vs. Power 6 teams that year, beating Pitt (who was bad) before the Mississippi State game.

Femi Odukale played in that Pitt-Minnesota game!

Ben's tenure peaked right about then when they won at Michigan. Perhaps it's nosed out when they were up 18 at Iowa last year.

Interesting topic, and I've been ruminating on this for the last month or so. There are a couple of other options.

Feels like a new thread starter when the cord is officially pulled next month.

In the Big Ten category of ...It shouldn't be surprising but it is almost every time...
Wisconsin, once again is in the top four of the Big Ten standings. The system wins for Wisconsin.

Doh! Wisconsin travels to Purdue and wins. Michigan State travels to Illinois and wins, making Izzo the all time Big Ten wins leader.
Gophers sabotage inaugural USC/MN Big Ten matchup for Musselman.

So...if the Gophers somehow run the table...win their last 5. Maybe 8 or 9 seed?
Play the one seed....shock the world and win for 20 victories. Then wake up and lose the next game....are they in the NCAA Tournament? Or by some other path ... #10 seed say... and get to the final four of the Big Ten Tournament and lose...are they in? I believe they'd have 20 wins minimum in either scenario.
Does 10 and 10 in conference...with one win the Big Ten Tournament do it?

It seems 7 Big Ten teams are pretty much on the road to in?
Beating Nebraska would maybe help the most to put them behind us? Beating Wisconsin is awesome under any circumstances but very helpful to not lose to lesser teams in the run to finish for it be a significant difference maker by itself.

Can we jump Nebraska, Oregon, USC, Indiana and Ohio St...do we only need to jump two of them? Will only 10 get in? We did beat Michigan, UCLA, Oregon, USC above us in the standings. Almost have to add a Nebraska win to push them down and Wisconsin win would then be helpful but maybe not critical?

For us to have a chance, we'd need to win out and likely win 2 games in the B1GT. We still aren't all that close because of loss accumulation and our OOC SOS and overall OOC performance. The resume would look a lot better had we not blown the Wichita State game and simply played Florida, even had we lost by 20+. Since Jan 1, were playing like a bubble team. We just have nothing in OOC to fall back on. Omaha, Yale, North Texas and Cleveland State all actually turned out to be good to decent games. But if you schedule Bethune, FDU and Morgan State you know exactly how those teams are gonna go. ORU being this bad is a surprise given their history. Just caught them on a really bad down turn.

I think if we can beat Nebraska, it's gets a lot harder to say no to us, assuming we win the games we're supposed to and winning a BTT game or 2. The Wisconsin game will be tough and beating them this go around would be extra sweet, although I'm not counting on it.
Momentum has carried teams like ours in the past into crazy March runs in past years ( NC State last year) so let's keep it going!

Win out and you finish with a winning conference record 11-9. You finish with at least 6 Quad 1 wins, multiple top 25 wins and a 7 game winning streak. Put that resume next to all the other bubble teams and it's going to be very difficult to argue against an invitation.

Just keep winning

Those top 25 wins will help offset some of those early season disappointments. Keep winning and the fans will show up.

UCONN as well when they won 5 games in five days to win the Big East and qualify for the Dance, as they grabbed a title in 2011 as they rode Dawson Garcia, err, Kemba Walker all the way to a championship.

Belief is a powerful thing and the more you achieve the more you believe.

I've seen few teams that have consistently played as hard as the Gophers, on both ends, even when we started 0-6 in the B1G. I completely forgot about Cardiac Kemba's historic run. That's another good run. Let's keep things rolling

Silly stuff happens all the time.

Why not us? Why not now?
