LESS THAN 2 MONTHS UNTIL THE MADNESS, U.S.A. -- Gopher basketball fans still have about two months to endure the remainder of this forgettable season, but there is good news on the horizon. We're less than two months until Selection Sunday (March 13), when 68 other schools not named Minnesota will hear their names called by Jim Nantz. There is no such thing as a bad Selection Sunday, even when your team does not join the party.

Here's Road to Selection Sunday's latest NCAA Tournament Field of 68 projection. The B1G Conference is up two bids since we last met on Dec. 21, as Michigan and Ohio State (one of our "last 4 in") with recent hot streaks have forged their way into the field. The Big XII and, somewhat surprisingly the Pac 12, lead the way with 8 bids apiece. However, as we all know, a lot will change between now March 13.

RPI rankings are noted in parentheses. An * denotes the current conference leader and/or best RPI in a multiple-bid conference.

Power 6 Peer Group Update: Gophers Bringing Up The Rear

Here's as good a spot as any for an update on the Gophers Power 6 peer group. All of these teams prior to the season were expected to finish near the bottom of their respective conferences.

At least for now, 4 of the Gophers' 6 peers solidly are in contention for NCAA bids. Road to Selection Sunday currently has 2 of 'em (K-State and Washington) in the Field of 68, though the Huskies are in only because they're the Pac 12 leader.

Gophers Power 6 Peer Group
#42 Georgia Tech (11-6, 1-3 ACC) -- "others considered" in latest Field of 68 projection
#43 Alabama (10-5, 1-2 SEC) -- "others considered"
#45 Kansas State (11-5, 1-3 Big XII) -- one of the 7 at-larges from Big XII
#74 Washington (11-4, 3-0 Pac 12) -- automatic qualifier as conference leader
#106 Creighton (12-6, 3-2 Big East)
#190 Nebraska (10-8, 2-3 B1G)
#208 GOPHERS (6-11, 0-5, B1G)

USC could be on that peer group list as well. it's early but USC is starting off great and becoming a good story after winning just 5 games in the last two years. After beating Arizona at home and UCLA on the road and they won't be under the radar much longer. And yes, it's Enfield's 3rd year (sound familiar?) and even last year many were calling for his head. Again, it's early but USC could be a very interesting story this season. One more note...Andy's wife is still hot. Below is a link to a "fire Enfield" story from last year.
