Rick on Richard at Minn "it's a perfect place for him to become something special"

per Shooter:

Richard, who has a six-year contract worth $1.2 million annually, was associate head coach at Louisville two seasons ago.

"He knows my athletic director very well," his dad said. "But he's his own man and wants to blaze his own trail, and he is thoroughly enthralled with Minnesota. He loves the people. He loves the university. He thinks it's a very special place with special people.

"To me, it's a perfect place to raise my grandchildren, it's a perfect place for him to become something special like Bo Ryan has become at Wisconsin. That was my advice to him -- become a Billy Donovan at Florida, a Bo Ryan at Wisconsin, a Tom Izzo at Michigan State. Build something very special at Minnesota and build longevity.

"My feeling, personally, is why, good or bad, follow your dad? Why leave a place that can be something special?"

Go Gophers!!

god I hope everything in this is sincere. No reason Richard can't make us something special here. Would be incredible if Rick would retire and join on with Richard as a asst coach or some type of mentor. I think it would help immensely with recruiting

Under statement of the year. Haha

So they've stopped recruiting Mahmoud...nice and thanks :) This is a great article and good to know that Rick feels Richard can build something special here. I sure hope he can.

Wow this is great! Even just an article with these kind's of quotes from a coaching legend like Rick go a long way on the recruiting trail. Very excited about the future here!

This article is like a late Christmas present. Everything from Rick TELLING Richard to stay at Minnesota, to finding out just how much they help each other. Such a great read.

This also made me laugh.

So will Richard's dad. The pair will face each other next Nov. 14 when Louisville plays Minnesota in the Armed Forces Classic on ESPN in a U.S. Coast Guard's military hangar in Puerto Rico.

"I said to Richard, two things: Look, if this helps you, we'll do it; if it hurts you in any way...,' he said no," Rick said. "I think it's great for recruiting. So I said, 'Then we'll do it.'

"Were losing everybody, so he realizes he'll be a 20-point favorite over us -- that's why he did it."

Awesome article! I love the family Pitino and of course Coach P. Now lets work on getting that practice facility.

I have to say, they both seem to really enjoy William's Arena. I love that.

Yup, cool! All good!

I think he's the first coach since Clem who really gets the Barn and why we all love it so much. Richard has been such a great fit so far.

I like what he said about losing close games the first year. The last thing a good team learns is how to win. Next season I think we win most of those close games.

To think of all those coaches on our radar that didn't come here and we were all bummed but Norwood got the best of them all. He pulled one out of the hat that no one was thinking about. I can't think of a coach I would want more than Pitino. I have also become a big Louisville fan because the Pitinos just rock. What a cool family. I just love watching this team. These guys work and it is because of Pitino.

This makes me want the new practices facility even more. I feel like that is the one thing that could completely screw us over. That and Norwood leaving in the next year or two.

Those quotes are pitch perfect. Let's hope they don't screw it up and let him slip away.

They can start with this....

...Richard, who has a six-year contract worth $1.2 million annually....

Also....lets hope for a warmer winter next year.

LOL....

.....Rick Pitino, asked if there's any chance that Louisville will come to Williams Arena: "I don't think so, only because we're joining the ACC. We have to play Kentucky, we're playing Memphis, and it's very difficult to get another game on your schedule because of all the rivals that we have to play now as it is."....

Sure, Rick.

Sounds like Rick Pitino gets it. Really starting to dig the Pitino family. Love how they seem to understand what the important things to focus on are. If Richard has settled in here, you think he's worried over some practice facility? No doubt the dude knows, build a winner, and a practice facility will be a foregone conclusion. Build a winning program and resource needs won't ever be an issue.

I sure hope nobody digs up these same exact quotes from one year ago about Florida International. ;)

Dream scenario: Rick Pitino retires from Louisville and comes and helps out the UofM in some type of consultant role. So much do I want MN to become a Louisville type of program with Richard leading the charge.

My dream scenario is strikingly similar, except it also includes Anna Kendrick doing some unspeakable things that don't involve basketball in the slightest.

I just told a good friend of mine last night that the Pitinos seem like the type of people that would be awesome to have over for a BBQ...I bet they cut on each other constantly.

I love that Richard and Rick are all saying the right things & I am super excited about the direction of the basketball program on the court and that will only help with getting a practice facility off the court, but I for one am not going to take everything they say hook, line, & sinker. Rick has been around a long time and he moved up the ladder (and down from the NBA). I am sure he is telling Richard to say all the right things whether he loves it here or (God forbid) he doesn't (remember the Mrs. has say in this and who knows how they feel about his winter!). A lot of his program's success will hinge on recruiting and whether he is able to get the players he needs and if he runs into trouble there, I can see him moving to a place that might be 'easier' to recruit to.

Yeah, Father Pitino and Richard say all the right things but there's a reason Rick has been so successful, he's a great coach but he's also a great salesman. All of these comments I have to take with a grain of salt and just hope him and Richard are sincere.

Glad Pitino is here and hope he brings the program to another level.

That said, I put these comments under the category of, "what else is he supposed to say?"

Beat Bucky.

I prefer to take them at their word. As a life long Gopher fan, I have been thru the highs and oh so many lows of this team. The positive vibe the Pitinos are creating here is good for everything. As they say, action speak louder than words. Until their action shows me otherwise, I'm staying on the optimistic path.

Richard has mentioned his dad's moving around and failures in the NBA as things he's taken away from his dad's career. So I think he'll be moving around less than his dad did. Who knows how long he is here, but if I were forced to guess, I'd say it's a pretty long time.

As a life long Gopher fan, I am wary. Love what I've seen so far, but too many things have happened in the past. Just hoping recruiting success and progress on facilities happen quickly enough so Rich doesn't start looking elsewhere. I really do think he sees the potential. Hell, after the Wisconsin and Indiana games, how could you not? We're starved for a team to embrace.

I like what he said about losing close games the first year. The last thing a good team learns is how to win. Next season I think we win most of those close games.

That's what Tom Kelly said when he took over the Twins and what Bud Grant says about when he joined the Vikings: it's about the team learning how to win.

Hope Richard takes his dad's advice. He already ignored his advice to not go into coaching. :)

Can we get Ryan Pitino on staff? I think the lack of him on the sideline in a chicken suit is the only thing separating us from a conference title.

A quick Google Search of Richard or Rick Pitino and FIU find no similarities in rhetoric when showing up at the two universities. When he got to FIU he said we've aren't rebuilding, we are building.

I think hes a blunt and honest guy. Quote me and rub it in my face when he leaves for Kentucky.
