Richard Pitino on KFAN

Replacing Pitino with Johnson was the hoops equivalent of replacing Mason with Brewster.
We replaced a competent, if not spectacular, coach with a guy who had no business and no resume for the position and it imploded.
Some interesting parallels/contrasts.

Neither had ever been a head coach.

Brewster was a huckster who had no ties to Minnesota and people tired of his hype and used car sales personality.

Ben had plenty of ties to the state but didn’t seem interested or able to sell the program.

Interesting interview.

I do wonder if Williams arena could be renovated where the seating and experience is better then it is. I did get to the barn this year for Women's game for first time in many years and compared to Mariucci the seating was not very steep and no leg room at all and not very comfortable. Then after row 22 it is just old fashioned bench seats. It would be interesting to look at a scenario where the floor is dropped and the seating would be similar to the Taylor Center at MSU but hold 6-8K instead of 4.8K Taylor Center does. I have also heard since Mariucci changed to NHL arena, it would be more capable of being an arena for basketball as well? St. John's is having games at Madison Square Gardens, so why not for possible rivalry games could the Gophers use the Target Center? Sometimes special games at special locations bring a buzz of excitement.

It also seems to be Richard switched is offensive mind set at NM. I do think fans want

1) Top opponents to go against on somewhat regular basis. Not going to spend $ per game on season tickets when high percentage of home games are vs teams not likely to make NCAA tournament.

2) Entertaining team to watch(mostly offensively). I know I would rather go a game where my team loses 87-83 against a good team and fun up and down the floor vs winning 61 to 55 vs a mediocre team and having many shot clock violations. Caitlin Clark did not fill the seats in all those arenas because of her D. It was because she was exciting running up the court making awesome passes and logo 3's.

NIL - There has to be a happy medium of support the revenue sharing for players and knowing there is a lot of talent out there for a coach to be able to get players that fit his style without having to just think paying $ for top end talent that are all just about the $. It is hard for a player these days to not try to get the $ colleges somehow able to throw out. But there are also plenty of smaller teams in same NIL or less than current gophers that know how to make it work. Again Caitlin Clark made more of NIL endorsement outside of what Iowa's NIL I would think. High percentage of college athletes don't play professionally afterwards. Can you sell the vision of NIL through being setup with a career afterwards to be successful? For those top end talent can you sell the NIL opportunities that will come from the outside market, like CC, if they create a buzz like CC did. There also usually is a higher price the more NIL player gets with expectations, media commitments, social media pressure, outside no and not being able to go places without being interrupted. Also building a winning team vs top opponents and make NCAA runs will help your NIL a lot. I am sure many top players of other teams, if given opportunity would play for Duke for no NIL.

Sounds like Niko is more offensive. Did watch some highlights where shot clock was well above 10 to get their first shot. Will he be able to do that in the big 10 is a ?

Rah!
Niko's pace of play this year was slowish- #241. But they do move the ball very well.

Richard wanted to run here as well- he just couldn't bring in the talent to do it in the Big Ten. If you don't have as much talent as the other team, getting more possessions into the game won't help you.

I liked him personally. Always a good interview. Seamed like a nice guy. I wasn’t a fan of his offense don't know if he has changed that much at NM. He missed on a couple of recuits. Bringing in that jelly kid was a big miss and I think he should have figured that out hand writting was on the wall for him. Injuries hurt also but everbody has to deal with them. I think it was time for him to go.
Jelly was an amazing ball handler and saw the floor well. The problem with him was he was a bad three point shooter and he couldn't get off the floor well enough to finish at the rim in the Big Ten. I really don't know if he can dunk- I sure don't recall seeing it and those finger rolls just didn't cut it in Big Ten play. So no outside shot, no ability to finish and he was toast in the Big Ten. He did have a 13 ppg year at Long Beach State as a senior.

Yeah, injuries were definitely an issue for Pitino's teams. Wouldve been interesting to see if the 2016-17 team could've made an NCAA run had Springs not gotten injured in the Big10 tourney semis. Then of course in 2018-19 we best Louisville in the first round but lose Murphy to injury 🙄.
Still, as others have said, was time to move on. Problem was we moved on in the wrong direction. So four yrs later here we are.
Good post and I would add 17-18, when they went from ranked in the teen's to finishing 15-17. That was the year Lynch got in trouble and Coffey missed nearly half the season.

Albuquerque is nice (I've been there twice). Perhaps, Raleigh, NC is better.

With how flux the Mountain West is, perhaps the ACC is better. No guarantees there though either.

Apparently, the Pitino family will not be house hunting the Raleigh, NC area in the near future.

Pitino has been a class act. I wish him a great career and I agree with NateDawg, he'll have a nice long career - MN was too soon for him/us, but it wasn't his fault for taking the opportunity.

Go Gophers!!
Told this before, but he ended up filling in for Fleck at an event. Great story teller. Definitely a guy who you'd have a beer or two with...which we did with him as the event wound down.

Yep. Every team has injury issues to some degree but Pitino's teams went far above and beyond in that dept.

The 16-17 team had little depth as well so losing Springs in that big ten semi was a death knell.
I remember being at work during the 18-19 game against Louisville. Was able to check the score in the second half and being shocked that we were up by that much. Quickly took lunch and ran to a local establishment to catch the end of the game. I believe the game was at Des Moines and we had a huge contingent of fans there. Really fun.
Nothing quite like the big dance, really hope we can get to being regular participants.

Pitino was very likable, I was pulling for him to succeed. If I recall, many felt he didn’t immerse himself enough in the Minnesota basketball community. He is a class act who speaks positively regarding his time here, I wish him the best

His teams defend much better than his teams here did.
To be fair it's probably easier to defend MWC teams than Big Ten squads...same with offensive scheming I bet.

I think Richard is at the perfect level for the way he coaches.

That was the word and part of Ben got the job. Problem is sucking up to the AAU coaches doesn't mean they will get players to play here.

He did coach 1 year at FIU (Florida International) before coming to Minnesota, and did fairly well too.

Bill Murray was indeed at the game as his son Luke was on the Louisville Coaching Staff. He's moved on to UCONN.

I was in Des Moines that weekend too. Good time. I knew it was going to be a big Gopher contingent after stopping at the Albert Lea/McDonald's truck stop early that morning. The place was buzzing with Maroon & Gold.

Buzzard Billy's was hopping that morning!

I missed the first part of the game, I bought tickets online on my way to Des Moines and thought I'd be able to get in once I got to Wells Fargo Arena. As it turns out, I had to run to a hotel south of the arena, pick up paper tickets, and run back. I deserved a Gopher win that day!

To quote the Who: “Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss”—(in the event of a Coyle search emergency).

I believe that the age of his kids at the time likely played a role in how immersed he was in the basketball scene here. His kids are now older and more independent and want to spend less time with boring ol' Pops and all of his dad jokes!

All be said, I'd rather be in the ABQ!
I'm a fan of green chili, so me too.

Looking at who is going to be in the Mtn West though starting next year would probably have me keeping my options open as a basketball Head Coach.

Seems to be a 2 bid league at most going forward with Boise St, Colorado St, Utah St, San Diego St & Fresno St hitching their wagon to the remains of the PAC 8-10-12.

Adding Hawaii which will make for a nice road trip and UTEP, a former WAC rival.

Two things. First, Coach Brew was the interim head coach at Charlotte this fall and expressed an interest in being named HC going forward. He didn't get the job and it doesn't appear that he was retained on staff by the new coach. I am not aware of him getting a new job.

Second, notwithstanding any of that, I would think Dan would be thrilled to get an opportunity to interview Tim Brewster at any time. He'd milk that audio until he retires.
Yep - doesn't look like Brew was retained. He's 64 and unless he was really financially irresponsible, he should have more than enough money to retire. But like Kill, he seems like the type who could never walk away. Wonder where he'll be getting his chili hot next.

I actually wouldn't mind if Pitino came back to the U.

His biggest problem was not filling out a team with enough depth. His teams always had large holes to fill when various starters could not play. He had so many players out of position and counted on walk-ons to start at times.

What walk on started for Pitino? I don't recall that happening, at least not in his last 4-5 seasons here.

I think if you drop the floor you might as well blow the thing up. There are two things that make Williams Arena "cool" and the raised floor is one of them, the barn design is the other. I would assume even those that think the arena is the reason we don't win would like part of those incorporated into a new stadium design.

Great interview, as he usually is. He was very open about his time here. My one nit: He says he's not a better coach now than he was here. I disagree.
His teams defend much better than his teams here did.

Only thing I would say... he isn't facing the quality of talent/depth night in and night out.

Also, I used to coach high school football. We had a season where we were 0-8 and had another season where we were 9-2. That was my best and worst season and I can't honestly say I coached better one season than the other. I can tell you I had better players and the plays I called actually worked. One year I had a bunch of seniors that would run through a brick wall and the other year I had a senior class that I felt like I had to hit with a stick to get them to do anything. If anything, I may have actually worked harder the year we were 0-8 because everything was hard.

Go watch films of the games, not much defense and give it to a guy like Carr and let him do his thing. That was about it, he got lucky with Coffey who had good coaching before he got to the U and was a really good player.

Amir was/is awesome, but I don't think it had anything to do with him having "good coaching" before he got to us haha
