Rice Lake vs Onalaska tonight in Menomonie

This team really needs a shooter like Blake that is more athletic. Who are our most likely prospects for2013? How many schollies?
Ever think to research this yourself?

3 scholarships (Rodney, Welch, and Ingram). I would think that were probably going after Matt Thomas and Kyle Washington the most.

Realistic recruits other than Thomas and Washington that we've offered:
Alex Foster - 3 stars Rivals and 3 stars ESPN (91) - offers from Minnesota, Purdue, Northwestern, and DePaul
D'Andre Downey - 3 stars Rivals - offers from Minnesota and UW-Green Bay
Gavin Schilling - 3 stars Rivals - offers from Minnesota, USC, Illinois, Oregon State, Vanderbilt, TCU, DePaul, and Colorado State
Marcus Ball - 3 stars Rivals - offers from Minnesota, Illinois, Arizona State, Kent State, Toledo, Bowling Green and Northern Illinois

Marcus Ball is being recruited more heavily for football and will likely be a football scholly/basketball walk-on wherever he ends up, a la Bryant Allen.

Dont forget about Juwan Parker from Oklahoma(?) Supposedly has the gophers high on his list. 64 SG but I dont know much besides that.

ECMEM96-
Glad to see another Big Rivers guy in the forum(Hudson 99). I have heard from some coaches at Hudson the same thing that they wanted a guarantee that all 3 would be on varsity together.

Thanks RiverGopher. Yea it is what it is. I totally wouldn't be surprised about them moving to MN, if it's true. Hudson though does seem to have a pretty sweet Soph in Alex Henrick. He should be on a few folks radar. He had a great game against Kalien and Chi-Hi and went for 27 unforunately kalien had like 39

ECMEM-
What do you see Alex Herinks potential as? Guys at our pick up game were arguing about it on Wednesday. I think Mid-Major as high end and D2 as low end, what do you think. His dad is a helluva guy played for Hudson in the early 90s and now runs Hudsons youth program. You think if he sprouts up another 2 inches he may get those mid-major looks I was talking about. I was at the Chip game that kid for Chi-hi is a talent.

If this is true (that the younger brothers are moving to MN) than that is good news for Gopher basketball. The family is very close and I know that they loved having the brothers playing together. I could very much see them wanting them to play in college together. I've seen them play about 5 times and I believe that the freshman (Henry) is eventually going to be the best player of the three. He's still a baby but very skilled....has a great looking shot....and is going to grow into his body and gain muscle. I think he might become a monste

I know from multiple, and I mean multiple people in the Rice Lake program that there are some huge issues with these kids. How many mistakes does Bo Ryan make recruiting good players.... not many. He never, ever even sniffed at this kid and there is a reason why. Wally is a crazy good athlete - he is built like a linebacker and can high jump 7 feet, but there is more to the game than that. Good Luck Tubby.

No offense, but you're full of crap if you don't think Bo "ever even sniffed at this kid..." That's just not true. My sources indicate that Bo kept telling Wally to "be patient...it'll come" and he got tired of being patient.

“@GophersNow: Thomas might be able to play some point guard in college. But he's more of a shooter in the mold of Blake Hoffarber but more athletic.”

Not sure I agree with the PG comments. Matt has a strong handle, but I think he would struggle handling the ball against pressure defense as a primary PG. Though he's a different player than UW's Josh Gasser, I think his ball-handling skills will be valuable in the same way that Gasser's are. As a SG, they don't have to focus on handling much, but they can help alleviate pressure on the primary PG by bringing the ball up from time to time. It's nice to have a second guard on the floor who can be trusted with the ball, and I believe Matt can do that at the next level.

In regards to the Hoffarber comparison, I do agree that he's a shooter like Blake, but I think he's better athletically than Blake was. Matt is noticably bigger (now about 6'4") and more explosive than he was over the summer. I also think Matt's offensive game is a little more complete than Blake's was. He has a pretty nice mid-range game, and has shown an improved ability to beat defenders off the dribble.

Marcus' other tweet noted that Matt likes the Gophers, and I do believe that is the case. However, I still think they are behind UW and Iowa St. in Matt's recruitment. It will be interesting to see how much attention Matt gets in the upcoming evaluation period in April.

I thought about including him, but he's quite a stretch. Parker has offers from Baylor, Memphis, Vanderbilt, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, Georgia, and Mississippi State. Plus, he still has another year to pick up offers.

Right now, I'd say Schilling, Thomas, and Washington are the three big targets. All three would be excellent to land.

One quick question- I haven't been to any Rice Lake games this year. What class is the second-oldest Ellenson (assuming Wally's the oldest), and how good is he? I've heard a lot of great comments about the freshman, but not much about the other kid.

Thanks.

He is a Junior this year. I have seen him play twice so take it for what its worth, but I would guess his ceiling is the Northern Sun. The youngest brother I believe will end up being the best of the 3.

I was at the game as well. I have heard that the younger two Ellenson brothers are going to be transferring to De La Salle next year. I heard before that they were going to move to the metro, but heard tonight that they decided on De La Salle.

Where did you hear this, just curious? Most I know that are close to the Ellensons have heard nothing about this. Nothing will surprise me however, the move back to Rice Lake was a surprise to everyone. Funny how things work out...my guess is those boys would have had a better chance getting to state staying at ECM and playing in D1 up here. Their D2 section was loaded and Onalaska will have a fight on their hands with Antigo today.

I know nothing definitive about the Ellenson's and DeLasalle, but my sources from within the Big Rivers conference have also heard those rumors. They don't know who the root of the rumor is, (they even asked me where I heard it, and I proudly replied gopherhole!), but they are going to do some investigating...

Also, coming from the same sources, they have seen both Rice Lake and Onalaska play besides just on Thursday, and would take Thomas over Wally simply based on overall game. Wally has freakish athleticism, but his game is still unpolished.

I have heard that Wally wasn't even player of the year in the Big Rivers. Can that be true?

Mom works in Rice Lake and dad works for the Eau Claire schools. I haven't heard anything about kids going to MN. Hopefully things go well for Wally with the Gophers and we eventually land Henry as well. Henry's recruitment will get crazy in the next year.
