Wow, I didn't think he would leave Baylor. This is a big shock to his players I'm sure....
 

I figured he'd leave Baylor but crazy all the NFL love he got. It'll be interesting to see if it works out for the Panthers. I can't think of too many current/recent successful NFL head coaches who came straight from a college head coaching job.

Out of curiosity why are you surprised he went to the NFL? Seemed pretty clear he was going to get one of the openings from pretty early on in the process.
 

I'm pretty sure I read right before their bowl game that he stated he had no interest in any NFL position.
 


What are the chances Fleck's name comes up as a possible replacement?

If you're referring to Baylor, there's no way. A lesser team in a lesser conference where MN has a 50% higher athletic budget (with room to grow much higher if football stays strong).

PJ has established a pretty good reputation now.

Gonna have to get used to it coming up (even if not seriously) all the time.

I feel like Fleck is now at the Chris Peterson (Boise State years) stage where he will be the first, or one of the first coach's mentioned on the wish list by fan bases pretty much any time their program loses or fires its coach. As others have said, we are just going to have to get used to that. Eventually the right thing may come along for Fleck to make a change, but I think this year has taught us he is not looking for the first big paycheck that presents itself, which is good for the Gopher program.

I'm hoping he does become our Alvarez or Hayden Fry, but as we all know - there are no guarantees in the business of college coaching.

Holy cow! The 7-year $60 mill piece alone ($8.6M per year) puts him as one of the top paid NFL coaches and is probably twice the average. No way he's turning that down.
 

Matt Rhule is one of the first coaches to handle this the right way.

He had a meeting with his players about the opportunities and he told them that if the opportunity came up and the players publicly said they supported their coach. It is the only time this has gone down the right way for as long as I can remember.

Chris Petersen is probably a good comparison for Fleck right now in terms of how fans see him. Big difference between them though is that Petersen was coaching at a non Power 5 school in Boise State even though pretty much any power 5 program would have loved to have him.

It was hard to pry Petersen from Boise, took a dream job in Washington (from that area I think) to get him to leave. I honestly think it will take something pretty amazing job wise to get Fleck to leave here given the great situation he currently has.

Wow, hadn't heard the terms. Coaching salaries are growing at such an extreme rate I wonder where the breaking point is where NFL and college teams say enough is enough.

Agreed.

Side note: Rhule has a similar career trajectory as Fleck. In my mind, this deal might be a benchmark for Fleck's future compensation.

Whoa, good point. 4 year rebuild at a G5 school followed by a 3 year build to an 11-win season at a P5. He even had a 1 year stint as an NFL assistant if I'm not mistaken.
 

The NFL is for strategists. It matters little how much of a salesman or motivational speaker you are. The players are professionals, and job security, accolades, and pay are plenty enough motivation. Are any Chiefs or Patriots motivated by gloomy/glum Andy Reid or Bill Belichick standing up in front of them? I doubt it ... but they want to be there because they know they'll win. NFL teams are fairly even with talent, and all pay the same (cap). You don't have to bother with recruiting.

College is the opposite. Scheme matters of course, but winning is a matter of motivating and coaching the players you have, and being able to sell your campus, facilities, and program to the best athletes available. The best college teams aren't anywhere near on a level playing field with the rest of even the P5. They get absurdly higher level of players.


Baylor I can only imagine is a difficult place to recruit to, if the recruit's family isn't highly entrenched in that religion. Similar to BYU. Honor code, unaccepting of other lifestyles, etc. I have no idea how much they allow athletes to bend or break the honor code, defacto.
