Nov. 1, 2008, Metrodome: Football coach Tim Brewster was 7-1 in his second season had Gopher Nation what remains the most excited it has been in the 60 years since the second Rose Bowl.

The Gophers had possession and were trying to break a 17-17 tie in the fourth quarter. Transmissions recovered recently show Northwestern brainiacs interfered with communications and sent in a fake punt from the Wildcats 31.

That failed and Northwestern won 24-17.

Conclusion: Big Ten's fear of this dynamic recruiter turning the Gophers into an unwanted power led to a conspiracy against Coach Brew.

Go Gophers!!

This is a terrible re-telling of that game. Somehow Reusse focuses on a failed fake punt at a no-mans-land spot on the field with 14 minutes left to go in the game, and neglects to mention the way that game ended, with one of the most appalling defeat plays in Gopher history.

Remember this one?

I remember wondering at the time, “How in God’s name did we not tackle that guy?” and watching this again confirmed that sentiment.

Slow news day…come on Reusse you can troll better than this.

that excerpt was taken out of context.

Reusse was doing a satirical piece based on the notion that MN teams always get screwed by fate or bad luck. so he took several games that featured bad losses and came up with "reasons" why the Gophers and other teams lost. Afterwards, even Reusse admitted that most people didn't get the joke.

If you read the entire piece, it becomes a little more clear that it was not meant to be taken seriously.

he's just not very good at jokes, but I get it was satire

My favorite: Can it get any worse for Minnesota? (yup, it just did)

Football is a game in inches and seconds. All these teams are over training resulting in injury, fatigue, and burnout. You add to this coaches with grade school teaching degrees making millions of dollars, this results in believing squeezing's your fist harder will result in success. In reality, by taking their extra time working on the mental aspect, plenty rest, and preparing for moments would translate into more wins, less injuries, and less burnout.

Yep. That play was right in front of us and that unforced drop was an epic fail. Ran into Arne after the game walking to the car and we both just couldn't believe that happened.

Here's to better times...

Wow I forgot how devastating of a loss this was. My gosh. And off Decker's hands no less, and then we sort of stood around and watched them seal the win.

Go Gophers!!

Yep, Decker gets hurt on the play as well, and the Gophers don't win again the rest of the year. It pairs nicely with the Northwestern loss from 2000 where the Gophers manage to blow a 35-14 lead with 2 minutes left in the 3rd quarter, and lose on a Hail Mary 42-35. There's video of that too, but enough trauma for one thread.

I was in Vegas during this in the sportsbook at the Hilton. The place started laughing. I was probably never more embarrassed to be a Gopher fan than that moment.....

Loved the Dick Jonckowski reference. Only met Dick a couple of times and he would have never remembered me, but he was a hoot and could spin a yarn.

You mean our best player dropping a ball at midfield that leads to an interception and instead of us being 20 yards from game winning field goal range they are in field goal range

Plus best player gets injured on play and isn’t the same the rest of the season?

They didn't just get into FG range the Northwestern guy makes a wild yakety sax run through our entire starting offense and takes out the tuba player in the end zone.
