Paraphrased:
Dave Mona wrong guy to be on the inside of this hire because he thinks Gopher Football is relevant because that's how he feels. Only him and the other 60 year olds in maroon sweaters.

Went on to say, if top targets saying no, take Leach if he's saying he wants it. Sumlin's attraction is his offense, Leach is the one who perfected it. Craig James' kid was spoiled and it was about playing time. James had a big platform to tell his story, wants to hear Leach's side.

Best take:
Mike Leach is the only guy left who can make Gopher Football relevant to the few who are still interested.

My Take:
I didn't have Leach on my radar and didn't want him until today. If you aren't willing to give a coordinator like Gus Malzahn a shot and Mullen, Hoke, Calhoun, Belotti, or a surprise won't take the job, then roll the dice.

Sumlin might fly, but wouldn't expect a lot of excitement. Trestman might hold the season ticket base and get a chance, but doesn't regain any momentum for the program.

Jagodinzski or some stretch spells trouble for TCF and Gopher Football. Mike Leach behaving and winning here is a smaller risk than rolling with a Jagz or even Trestman, probably less a risk than Sumlin. I don't see a lot of room for error this time. TCF is one more poor coaching regime away from being a poor investment for anyone other than the 50,000-100,000 hardcore fans who are getting older and smaller by the year.

I can't wait till Maturi names an obscure coordinator as the head coach and all of Gopherhole leaps off a bridge! Then we will hear Maturi say something like "For those who don't do their homework [insert name] doesn't look like a head coaching candidate. Well I did my homework."

Now Reusse's opinion should be listened to and is credible? The world has truly turned upside down.

Ruesse has actually been a roll as the media member making the most sense regarding gopher football for about a month and a half now.
Coincidentally that is about the time Brewster was fired.

The obvious retort being: "Did he do his homework hiring Brewster too?"

The Mona take was brilliant. Wrong guy!! Dave is a sweetheart, but he's got rose-colored glasses when it comes to Gopher Football and his loyalty was rewarded. He's not the guy to tell Maturi what he doesn't want to hear and truly believes that we're a few breaks away from playing on that Pasadena grass and TCF will be the hardest ticket in town.

What scares me about Mona, is I wonder if he's content with a rotten team because he's got his booth gig and fewer people would be a more intimate experience for him and his wife at TCF and the band's halftime show makes it all worthwhile and is the silver-lining because they're worth the price of admission. A quality football performance is a bonus.

Are Maturi and Co. at all concerned with the public perception regarding the Mike Leach situation? Short of "Fire Brewster", I haven't seen Gopher fans this vocal about anything in a long time. I wonder if they're even noticing?

Gopher fans are even agreeing with Reusse! Is Maturi this far removed from reality?

No because he truly thinks that hiring Leach would be a mistake. That is the only way he can realistically look at it and not hire him.

Why has it taken the media this long to get on the Leach bandwagon? They should have been pulling for Leach weeks ago.

Whoever he hires, it would do Maturi well to let the incoming Pres know about it first and get his nod of approval along with arranging some communication between the new Pres and Coach.

If Leach is hired, how long before the media jumps right back off the Leach bandwagon? These same people in the media who are saying we should hire Leach will go on a feeding frenzy against him. I'm not against a Leach hire, but I don't expect that just because the local media favors him now doesn't mean that their attitudes are going to be the same after he is hired.

True but hopefully we will be winning football games and will care very little about the haters.

This is exactly what will happen.

Think about Rosen backing Trestman....The only reason Mason wants Trestman is because it would confirm his longheld belief that Gopherfootball is irrelevant.

If you think Mona built his business and contacts by just being a nice guy, i don't think you are giving him close to enough credit. He gets stuff done in the community, and is a really smart guy. He did not get rewarded with this role, I doubt he personally wanted any part of it. Bruininks has been trying to get him into the athletic dept for a while because he knows how to build relationships and figure out what people need, but he has been too busy to accept.
He may not be a football expert, but his knowledge of sports is pretty good. I think his Dad was a high school coach, and he grew up around football. I am thrilled JM is not completely on his own doing this search.

Thing about Leach, though, is he can take care of himself. He may be vilified by the media, but he'll be savvy enough to turn it back around on them. He won't run and hide or respond by getting pissy. He'll take every question and respond with just enough pith to give the ink-stained wretches what they need and subtly rip on them if they're ripping the program.

Honestly, dude is just what we need to become relevant again.

My only question about Dave Mona is "What in the h*ll does Dave Mona know about football?"

If Reusse told me the sky was blue I'd take a step back and reconsider.

Thanks for contributing. Doesn't 1500 have something else for you to do? I think Pat would like some coffee.

shalalala created the foundation for the success that Wisconsin is having today in ALL sports. I hate her politics, however, he vision for College Athletics and what it means to the reputation of a University is inspiring and results tested.

This has got to be the worst thread I have ever read....
e.g.
1. Reusse "making sense"? Reusse hates the U and just recommends this to cause problems for the U.
2. Mona is for mediocrity so he can broadcast to a small audience and have a good seat for his wife??? What the hell are you talking about? Whre are your facts?
I cannot believe for one minute you actually think the people involved in this process aren't being thorough, aren't evaluating things you can't see, aren't trying to build this team into the best one it can be. (Yes, they can and do make mistakes...but who hasn't done that? You can have the best information in the world and still make a mistake in this kind of hiring).
Sorry, but when posters start mimicking Reusse's attitude, you've got to wonder what their motives are.
(Reusse would be the 1st one to jump on Leach when he raised his voice in a practice...the headline would be: "Has the U hired a wildman?"

Days like today are probably why it's good we live in a representative democracy.

Reusse is the single biggest Gopher hater in the media. Even Barreiro looks like a booster next to fat Pat. he gets his jollies watching the U lose. He wasn't happy going all the way back to Salem. I won't give him any credit at all.

The big question is which station will Leach choose to do the weather.

Ruesse hates the U? Frankly, I don't know that there's a member of the media that gets more giddy at the thought of the Barn rocking than Pat Ruesse. Ruesse explained in a recent article that when he became a journalist, that he than had to become objective (I don't buy all this crap about journalists been able to put themselves above the fray) and I believe he paints a pretty accurate picture about the status of U athletics and of the pro sports teams in Minnesota, too. He was a Gopher fan before there were pro sports in Minnesota and I believe he still is. Because Ruesse managed to see in Tim Brewster what immediately what it took nearly 4 years for other to see he is somehow a Gopher hater?

This applies to all the media that routinely get ripped on here because they dare point out the flaws in U athletics: Journalists like to cover successful programs. Why would they hope the teams they cover suck?
