Reusse column: Mathieu joining list of elite Gophers' JUCOs

What's wrong with that? Assists are a guarantee of at least two points. Turnovers aren't a guarantee of anything. If a player is directly responsible for at least four points for every chance that they give the opponent, I'd take that day in and day out.

Turnovers are guarantee of a lost offensive possession and in many cases an easy basket on the other end. Assists are worth a positive 2 or 3 points. Are turnover can be worth a negative 6 point swing.

If we could have kept him in school, he would have made the list. Great basketball player after leaving U and going to UCF - still has records there for pts & rebounds. Got a cup of coffee in NBA with Orlando.

Jones came in with Bobby Jackson, I think, but never caught on here. A nice player, but he was also competing against guys who would take us to the Final Four. We were pretty loaded at the time. He would not have had the playing time here that he got at UCF, and probably made a good basketball decision by moving on. I don't recall the situation being one of him needing to transfer based on academics, but that may have been a quiet reason he left as well.

Larry Davis was a darn good recruiter.

As all big ten? I don't think so.

I agree. Many of the other names you listed in your original post wouldn't be candidates either. Again assuming that a PG is guaranteed a spot on the All Big Ten team.

I don't believe anyone on that team needed "to transfer based on acadmics". Jan made sure of that.

Got me there. I almost had put Jan out of my mind. The heaviness has returned. Ugh!

He's been a very pleasant surprise, but he's not a first-team Big Ten player. He was outclassed by Appling in the last game (granted he is a senior). Mathieu is fearless, no doubt, but he is still 5'9" and will be next year too.

My apologies to Mathieu. He was terrific last night.

I was sitting close enough to see and hear Dre Mathieu pull both Hollinses aside in the second half warmups and give them a pep talk. It's amazing to see such a new guy have the confidence to take the lead like that.

Mathieu has been fantastic so far. Playing in the Big Ten, you really need at least one guy who isn't scared to take over the game. Andre is certainly another player with that sort of mindset, but he hasn't really had the same impact as last year when he played point. That last second shot against MSU to send the game into OT was huge. Dre didn't hesitate and made an aggressive drive to the rim. That's something that we have been missing since losing Westbrook.

Key word bolded. A turnover could also be worth a 0 point swing.
