Reusse: A fan can't be sane and justify this Gophers loss

I'm a sane Gopher fan and old enough (60) to where I don't allow myself to get riled up about stuff anymore. When I was younger, I used to, so I don't hold it against younger fans who go batsh*t crazy about games and what is written afterward.

It was a disappointing game. No question. I don't know if we were out-coached on this particular night, but I think Syracuse schemed well, especially on defense. They used their speed to great advantage and we couldn't counter-punch. Coaches or players? Probably a bit of both.

I don't know if it's Kill, Limegrover, or other assistants, but we have to do something about our passing game. Nelson and Leidner have been woefully inconsistent throwing the ball, but I wonder if scheme contributes to that. I saw the same thing in the NIU game where Utah State shut them down. If you put pressure on the QB and have guys stay in their lanes, it shuts down the run option that Nelson and Leidner seem to go to almost automatically instead of checking down to other receivers. Is that the QB, the WRs not getting open, or the design of the passing game? Just something to think about. Kill and staff know a ton more than I do, but after watching NIU and us falling prey to pretty much the same defensive strategy, it made me wonder.

As per Reusse. Best sportswriter in town. Has historical context and understands what he's writing about. Not a beat writer so he doesn't have to suck up to anybody. A tad too acerbic at times, but (and this doesn't seem to dawn on anyone anymore even in the era of Fox News and MSNBC) he's trying to generate buzz and vanilla doesn't do that.

Very well stated

I won't click on the strib, so whatever is written there is irrelevant.

Even Reusse gets it right once in awhile.

Yep. He might be "right" in this case, but he's so often wrong it's laughable. He's become increasingly cranky over the past year or so. I think he's taking the whole "ballsy" sports reporting thing they have going at ESPN 1500 to the extreme. Kind of sad to see him act like a buffoon.

gophs left a birdie putt short.

Reusse's right. The game was an embarrassment.

Right now, I don't know if this team overachieved for a few weeks and fell back to earth or regressed. Right now I think we overachieved, but I keep flipping between the two.

In any event, I'm worried about this team regressing next season. I don't see the horses on offense, especially at quarterback, for that side of the ball to improve dramatically. I also don't see the defense being better next season. I think it will be worse, but I don't know how much worse.

I'd be happy with another bowl appearance in Texas at this point. Anything better than that would be great.

Don't think anyone is justifying the loss, we played like crap, simple as that, but doesn't erase the progress the program made as a whole this season. Reminds me of when the 01 gopher hockey team lost to Maine in the NCAA. the loss lingered and they cameback and won back to back national titles in 02 and 03

On the bright side, the Gophers didn't look as bad as Michigan did against K-State.

Two dreadful performances by the Big Ten so far.

Michigan State, Ohio State, Wisconsin, and Iowa need to carry the flag for the Big Ten this season. Those are the 4 bowl games that truly matter for the conference. Winning 3 of those 4 would be a signiciant accomplishment for the Big Ten.

Georgia-Nebraska is pretty much a battle of disappointing, beat-up teams & fan bases, so I'm not going to put much stock in that one, even though it's Big Ten vs. SEC.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Big Ten wins only a game or two in the bowls, and the stories about the Big Ten being an afterthought for football appear everywhere. I don't think the Big Ten is very good at football but others do. Let's hope the next round of games goes better.

First of all, the premise of Reusse's statement and how he worded it is so juvenile and so poorly articulated it's an embarrassment that he is a professional writer. How could his boss allow such a poorly written statement. You can't be sane and justify this loss? What kind of insane statement is that? If what he meant to say was "you must be delusional if you still believe the Gophers and coaching staff are a top-notch program after watching them lose to Syracuse", then he should've stated that. What he wrote was something a person with a very scattered and unorganized mind would say; something a man with poor writing skills would write. Seriously, I think Pat Reusse is mentally and emotionally ill. I'm not kidding either. The man can not put together a cohesive, smoothly written piece. He writes like a man who has all these random thoughts who tries to tie them together with poorly reasoned thinking. I would bet a lot of money that he has early-onset dementia or alzheimers.

Hey Pat, the Gophers played a sub-par game against Syracuse. They lost a game they could've won. Guess what, this happens every single fvking day in collegiate and professional sports. I'm a Golden Gopher fan. I'm sane. And I believe Jerry Kill and staff did some remarkable things this year to beat Nebraska and Penn St. You, Pat, also stated that beating Nebraska and Penn St. were great accomplishments. Pat, why can't you be a normal and sane human being and just say that you're disappointed the Gophers lost without calling people insane and trashing Jerry Kill and company. Pat, you're a very troubled man with a lot of emotional scars. You need intense therapy and to learn how to deal with the world in a rational manner.

The Big Ten will have Rutgers and Maryland coming in so those thoughts should subside next year.

Why does the attendance affect Minnesota and not Syracuse?

Perhaps it did. Neither team looked great. Regarding Reusse: Another attempt to rile up Gopher faithful. I won't click on Strib, like some others on here, so won't comment on the entire article. But fans being insane? Hopefully. And hopefully as a group we end up standing behind our team. I must be insane. Even though football is way down the list of what's important in my life, I still manage to do extraordinary things to follow the Gophers and also manage to drop a significant amount of money in the process. I don't need a sportswriter to frame what's right or wrong with how I feel about my favorite team. And none of us should need to justify our fandom regardless of how well the team is performing at a given time.

Bad, Mr.Bigelow, very bad.

Happy New Year to you anyway!

Don't understand why there has been virtually NO mention of the fact the Gophers were missing 40% of their starting O-Line. How is this not a major consideration? Because they're not sexy positions or there is supposed depth on the line now? Bush was making his third start ever and had almost ZERO experience prior to that first start. Tommy O is incredibly inexperienced at Center

With Bak and Christenson in the lineup, I would bet a months salary the Gophers win. Period. But those two players missing gets no ink, just a few mentions of Engel missing, which I would put well beneath the two linemen I regards to their importance.

It's not a total coincidence that the offense went in the toilet when Bak and Christenson left the lineup. I think Bak had started like 22 straight games?

Hopefully they're both back 100% next August.

The Gophers are also just as good as Ohio St. then because we lost to Michigan St. by 11, the same as Ohio St.

After further thought, I think we are better than OSU because we lost to MSU by 11 on the road, while their game was on a neutral site.

I also enjoyed the comment about the Gopher fans only selling 3,000 tickets, while NDSU sold over 7,000 to a pep fest this Friday in Texas. Yes, a regular bowl game at the same location as last year is very comparable to a National Championship. Not that it is surprising, but some of these NDSU fans act like they've always been huge supporters of their team. They forget that just a few years ago they were having games with barely 12,000 fans there.

Yea, it was a poor life decision.

Happy New Year to you as well, Ice!

I didn't read it, of course, but your critique seems reasonable. Good job.

That's crazy talk. You are not insane.

Excellent comment.

...AND best receiver. QBs still should have played better, but your post is excellent.
Yea, it was a poor life decision.
Nobody's perfect.
