Red-Shirt Shortell?

Maybe someone who has been at the practices can tell me if Parrish is close to Shortell. If Parrish is close to Shortell, then we really need to redshirt Shortell. Having a current D1 football player as a family friend (not at MN) who redshirted and talked about how much it helped, I think we should try to redshirt as many guys as possible. This is down the road, but if Shortell is a senior, I think he will definetely be an above average QB in the B1G. If he is a redshirted Senior, I think he will contend to be the QB in the B1G.

Also, the only reason why I would burn a redshirt with him is if Gray went down in one of the first 6 or 7 games for the rest of the season.

Personally, I think the coaches may sort of be wondering "who do we like better - Nelson, or Shortell?" If they like Nelson better, and feel Shortell is the clear-cut number two this year, then don't redshirt Shortell and let him start his junior and senior year after MG is gone. Nelson then redshirts next year, and then when Shortell graduates, Nelson will be a junior and ready to take over.

You might be right, and I'm all for long term thinking, but it just seems that situations are more fluid than this. Its seems presumptive to be comparing Nelson and Shortell right now, Nelson won't even practice with the team until next spring.

I think it is as simple as who does Kill want at QB if Gray gets hurt and I think Shortell is the answer from all sources.

It is hard to tell if Parrish is close to Shortell because he doesn't get anywhere near the amount of reps. It is very clear to anyone who has attended the practices that Shortell is Kill's No. 2 QB and that will not change before the first game. There is zero chance that Shortell is going to be redshirted.

Furthermore, even though Gray is a lock to start the first couple of games Kill will not hesitate put Shortell in if Gray does not move the offense and turns over the ball too often. There is no way that Kill is going to stick with a QB or any other player who is not performing up to his expectations. Every player is going to be competing his butt off for playing time every day until the end of the season.

Is Shortell that much better at this point than Phillip Nelson is going to be next year?

If Nelson is as good as the super-fans on this message board say, Nelson will be next year's #2 QB. Heck, I might consider red-shirtingNelson next season so he can take the reigns as a RS-Freshman and be the more successful version of Adam Weber.

So, why lose the better back-up option this year if Shortell is not the answer down the stretch?

I think it is safe to say that there is going to be some very healthy competition at the QB spot for the next 4-5 years. I just hope we have a running game so these guys can all develope at a good pace.

This goes along with what I've been saying all along.

The folks screaming they need to redshirt Shortell at all costs are basically saying they assume Shortell will be the best QB the Gophers are going to be able to recruit in the next 2-3+ years. If he's even remotely the second best option at QB on the roster, Shortell CANNOT redshirt this year. Period.

Let's try to have some faith that at LEAST every other year the Gophers will be able to bring in an impressive player at the QB position.

I think the people who are wanting Shortell to RS if at all possible (no one said "at all costs"). Everyone seems to be wanting him to RS rather than play sparingly, I think most of us would be totally cool with him RS and getting significant PT.

However, it really has nothing to do with Nelson or Leidner. I think the best possible way to improve a team is by having talented/experienced players. Shortell will be a more talented/experienced kid going into the 2015 season than he is right now. If Nelson beats him out, then so be it. It's certainly possible, but either way it would be an improvement on the roster as a whole.

As a member of the "try to RS Shortell crowd", I would prefer to keep that option open (whether it be as a future starter or a better backup) to improve our future roster if Shortell isn't going to make a big difference this season. If he makes a difference, we'll all be into it.

Why are we even considering a kid who is still a senior in high school and let that figure into a decision on whether to redshirt a kid this year? I bet someone can find a thread from 3yrs ago and people had already penciled Alipate as the starter today......

The fact is that Kill is going to play MG as much as he can. That is pretty much his best (& only) option at the start of the season. He also has to plan who is going to be the guy in case MG gets his bell rung in the middle of the game, and can hopefully steer the ship. At practice and the scrimmage, he played BOTH Shortell & Parrish with the #2 group. I'd be willing to bet that Kill and Limegrover are trying to get as many reps on film, so they can make the decision on who they think can best run the offense if the worst case scenario happens (i.e. MG cannot play). The doors at practice are closed today. They probably have the #2 guy identified and are preparing him for USC.

I'll place my trust in Kill making the best decision for the team this year.
