We have taken several recruits away from NIU. Are there any "rules" for this (mostly unspoken I'm sure)?

It's natural that these young men would want to follow the coaches for whom they had made an initial commitment. My question is what, if anything, has to happen for Kill to offer them at Minnesota? Do they need to first officially decommit? Is this exodus fairly normal? Do they have to get a Gopher tattoo (joke) before we can offer?

I'm not claiming a foul on Kill & staff, just curious.
 

No rules that I know of. Nothing is more than verbal at this point. MN just needs to give an official offer starting the 3rd of Jan and they can come on over.

I think the consensus is that its a "dick move" to lure someone away at the last minute. I would guess that the West Virginia staff doesn't have a whole lot of respect for Brewster (Michael Carter situation).

But I was expecting Kill to get his prior NIU commits. His staff probably spent a lot of time watching these kids and they obviously "like" them as players. Every time a coach goes from one school to another, you have to assume he'll be taking his recruits with him.
 

I think the only actual rule would be if Kill was recruiting these kids before he officially was hired at the U. BTW No one is saying he did that.

I don't know if it's such a dick move, (I seriously doubt if any program had any respect for Brew for any reason. Outside of Fitz at NW...) recruits switch all the time, nothing is set in stone until NSD.
 

Unspoken rule or not, I wouldn't feel too bad about this given what we could have had if Holtz had stuck around for a couple of more years.
 


The unofficial rule used to be, many years ago, that it was okay if both schools had been recruiting the kid, but if only the former school was recruiting the kid, the kid had to call the staff after they moved. Don't know what the "rule" is now, but since these days commitments don't even slow down other teams recruitment, I doubt there are very many rules left.
 

They are all fair game until formal offers are tendered and letter of intent signed and returned. Anything else is fantasy.

Coaches sometimes don't recruit kids who have shown a strong preference for another school because basically - it is a waste of time and money and both are usually in short supply. Anytime there is a coaching change other schools immediately put out feelers to kids they like just to see if their commitment has softened. Frequently they have and frankly that's fair.

Its just the way it is.
 

I don't thiinking taking a guy away at the last minute is even looked at as bad form anymore. bobby bowden made an art of it at FSU. If you have been recruiting the kid the whole time, he is absolutely fair game until the LOI is signed. It is the kid's future, it's his choice.
