If a kid gopher football is recruiting works in the service industry at a business I go to how much can I tip him and not get anyone or the U in trouble? Asking for a friend. Thx.

Most states allow NIL deals for High school. I doubt you could get in trouble for a very nice tip. I have read several stories of people being very generous.

I don’t think the U would get in trouble from a “rogue fan” doing something, if they had plausible deniability in knowing anything about it. If anything, I think the recruit could be more at risk, if accepting some kind of gift with any even whiff of a quid pro quo attached.

Also, I think staffs at a lot of places pool and then evenly split tips (or are supposed to).

I don't think the U is in any sort of jeopardy as long as you (or your friend) aren't boosters for the school already. That said, if you are giving the kid the money for the purpose of getting him to go to the U of M....that opens up a whole new set of issues.

If kid is in an industry that allows tips he is probably fine as well unless it is an amount that is so far above and beyond anything that would be considered normal that it raises red flags.

Actually is an interesting question and I am sure one with a lot of grey area on both sides.

There are no real rules anymore. The U wouldn't say that, but there aren't. Tip as much as you want.
