Can anyone recommend a good, portable propane grill for tailgating. Doesn't need to be huge and would love to have an official U of MN one or school colors if they make them. I think someone on this forum had one but I believe it was custom.

Thanks for the recommendations.

I have a Weber Q220 and it's one of the best purchases I've ever made. I went through a couple cheap $20-$50 portable propane grills and screwed up a fair amount of food on their inconsistent heating before biting the bullet and buying the Weber. I also have a stand for it and an adapter that allows me to run it off of a 20# propane tank instead of the disposables so I don't have to worry as much about running out of gas. The cooking surface is quite large and the heating is powerful and very even.

With the number of early games this year, I just picked up a griddle that is specially built for it so I can make eggs, bacon, french toast, etc. more easily.

It depends on how many people you plan to entertain and what kind of stuff you want to make. I bought a Weber Q and wish I'd bought the smaller one. It's a great grill but my tailgates are usually no more than 4-6 people and it is overkill. I bought it thinking it'd double as a home grill, but I usually use the Weber kettle with charcoal at home.

Please turn in your man card immediately. TV's, engines and grills are just a few things that no man should never discuss by using the phrase "I wish I'd bought the smaller one". :)

+1 When I did tailgate at the MetroDump, that was the grill of choice. I had a Q200 as well. Both are great. The thermometer on the 220 is a nice feature. Like you, I also bought the stand, the griddle accessory, the adapter hose, and the led light that attaches to the handle (awesome little light). The 20lb tank will more than cover an entire season. I still use them all of the time. You can smoke food with it, You can grill two chickens, a small turkey about 18 decent sized burgers, etc.. You can't go wrong with the Weber Q 220!http://www.weber.com/explore/grills/gas-portable/weber-q-220-2

if there are no budget considerations, you should look into a wood pellet grill from the WoodMaster company out of northern Minnesota. digital start and thermostat as well as a smoke mode. i own a deck model, with an optional gopher logo myself, and it cooks fantastic. unfortunately, it's not cheap, but if you want great grilling/cooking with the flair of a gopher logo, it's spectacular! plus the one of the link i'm sending has a built in towing hookup.

Thanks! one more thing to lust after. :p

I looked at a Traeger a while back. Sounds like they are similar. The Traegers are a little cheaper, but no customization. Well I guess one could with Rust-o-leum.

Are wood grills allowed? I thought it was gas only.

Pro tip: If you make pancakes, you'll probably end up making the batter the previous night, so get some of these (pictured below) for easy pancake making.

Propane grills only. No wood pellet or charcoal.

I bought the Coleman Road Trip grill back in 2008 and have never had a problem. Easy set up, easy start. No complaints.

It is good for grilling and tolerable for cooking something up in a pan. Wish it wasn't red though. Someone awhile back posted a modified version where they painted theirs white with maroon & gold accents, a la our storm troopers road unis... looked pretty BA.

The Weber 220 is perfect. I was talked into getting the smaller version by the little woman( I know, shame on me). It works great but takes a while to get going when it gets real cold. Can never have too many BTU's. I have 220 envy. Weber makes a great product!

Hey I found a "cheap" one at Sears.

That would be sweet, but the nice thing about the squeeze bottles are that you can just put 2 - 4 already loaded with batter in your cooler and you're done.

You are correct! Back when my group had a tailgate spot at the Dome, I looked into pancake dispensers and almost fainted. They were asking north of a hundred. I was actually shocked Sears had one for so cheap. The squeeze bottle is a great idea. Plus you won't cry if one is forgotten at the tailgate.

Dang! now I'm hungry for tailgate food.

Here's the one we've used for several years - no complaints. It's not huge but packs up really easily and gets the job done on the cooking side:

Here's the "next step up" model too: http://www.coleman.com/product/roadtripreg-lxx-grill/2000010225#.UDPpHqmPVBk

Got that also. Really like ours. Bought a griddle that replaces one of the grates and a trivet so you can use it like a gas stove.

The thing I like about it is the cooking height. I hate having to bend over constantly to check things, flip things, etc...

I agree with those who say the 220 is nice. It's just too much grill for 4-6 people.

The temp gauge is really nice. No more grill marks on the palm of my hand from checking to see how hot it is.
