Yes, after defeating Monsignor Scanlan for the Catholic High School Athletic Association City Championship Class AA, Christ the King, a couple of days later, again defeated Scanlan this time for the CHSAA State Championship Class AA. Christ the King now advances to the NYS Federation Tournament of Champions Class AA.

If it wasn't Demry finishing on drives to the rim, it was Klarke Sconiers '19 finishing off shots inside, or it was Natalija Marshall '20 connecting on short jumpers, and with the offense clicking on all cylinders, along with a stifling defensive beginning, Christ the King jumped out to a commanding 16-0 lead just over five minutes into the game.

Pretty much the perfect start for the Royals, Sconiers said she knew this kind of start from them was coming. Starts to games haven't always been the best this season for Christ the King and she wanted to set a tone and show that they could change that way when the game mattered most.

"We expressed in the locker room how we need to come with intensity," Sconiers admitted. "We usually get off to sluggish starts and that's what usually let's teams stay with us. We didn't want that happening today."

Scoring a game high 20 points was Demry, while Sconiers added 16 points and 11 rebounds while still sick and full of Mucinex after sitting out most of Friday's semifinal game.

The win puts Christ the King now back in a familiar position of going to Glens Falls to play for a NYS Federation Tournament of Champions Class AA title in two weeks time. They fell short of winning the championship a year ago, losing to Baldwin in heartbreaking fashion, and with so much to play for this time around Sconiers says it's going to be near impossible to deny them this time around.

"That is something that pushes us every day knowing how close we were, and we want to do it for Clare," Sconiers said referring to former Christ the King player and assistant coach Clare Droesch who passed away over the summer after a long battle with breast cancer. "Clarke knows how special this group is and this is something we definitely owe to her."

Klarke Sconiers and Christ the King advance to title game:
After coming up to Glens Falls and the NYS Federation Tournament of Champions a year ago and losing in the title game it's been the goal for this year's Christ the King team to get back and this time around finish the job.

That's been the desire for this Royals team since last season ended a year ago, and while there have been bumps in the road along the way Christ the King is there with a chance to this time win the championship after defeating Long Island Lutheran on Friday afternoon, 57-42.

Coming up clutch again it was Demry's stellar defensive effort in limiting Taylor to just 4 points on 2-19 shooting from the floor that carried the Christ the King attack as Klarke Sconiers '19 had 19 points, while Demry had a strong offensive outing as well with 14 points to pace the Royals.

There were moments in early on that Christ the King was playing too much from the outside and settling for perimeter jumpers, not getting it inside to Sconiers and Natalija Marshall '20 and playing through the paint, though Sconiers said that quickly changed.

"We talked after the first quarter and said we had to use our height more," Sconiers said. "They could match us on the outside but we felt as if we had an advantage with our size down low and we started using that more."

With Sconiers pacing the way with a big second quarter where she had 9 points the Royals took a 26-20 lead into the break, but it was the play of Demry that would carry them the rest of the way.

Sconiers and CTK win title with fourth quarter comeback.

But public high school champ Ossining matched that star power with three Division I-bound players of its own, led by University of Connecticut recruit Aubrey Griffin. By late in the third quarter Saturday night in the Class AA girls championship game, Ossining had built a 10-point lead and had Christ the King on the ropes.

“That’s exactly how I thought it would be,” Christ the King coach Bob Mackey said. “It was a war. Did I think we would be down 10? No.”

“We kept revisiting that locker room from last year,” said senior Klarke Sconiers, recalling the 58-49 defeat to Baldwin in the championship game last year. “We used that as motivation. We never wanted to feel that way again.”

With Kaelynn Sattersfield and Sconiers leading the way, Christ the King rushed past Ossining with a 29-21 fourth quarter burst on its way to an 81-76 triumph and the overall state championship.

“Nobody played the schedule that we do,” Sconiers said after scoring 17 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. “We used that as motivation to impose our will.”

Justice Ross, Des Moines East, was a unanimous selection to the Central Iowa Metropolitan League first team. Grace Cumming, Des Moines Roosevelt, was also named to the CIML first team.

Justice was named to the Des Moines Register second team and the State Class 5A Third Team.

Just so happens the school colors for Christ the King are maroon, gold and red. A nice coincidence for Klarke!
