I would have no problem predicting a .500 record for next year depending on who the coach is. Despite everything we have seen I still believe that there is a ton of untapped talent and athleticism on this squad.

Do we really have the talent of a 1-win team? Was the defensive talent really so awful that we couldn't help giving up 6 TD to South Dakota? There's a question of how much is talent and how much is coaching. Even with the inexperienced defense, we should have been able to make some second half adjustments. This team is going to get a total housecleaning on the coaching staff, and we need it. I think there will be more talent here than we realize for the next coach. Holtz took over a team that had been 1-10, and they won 4 games the next year.

The 1983 defense made the 2010 defense look good. 518 points given up in 1983. That blowout we had this year against Ohio State? That would have been an average amount of points given up in 1983. So, even after a truly awful season, you still can put together a respectable season, bad coaching can hide how much talent is there. I'm not saying the team is brimming with talent, just more talent than you would expect for a 1-win team; a better coach would have gotten more wins from this same talent.

Glen Mason was by most accounts an above average coach At-BEST. He was an overtime loss to Wisconsin away from winning the Big Ten in just his third season in Minnesota. Glen Mason was taking over for Jim Wacker who had been the coach in what was the worst period of gopher football history. He was doing it with Wackers players and running a different system and he turned it around in just 3 years.

It doesn't take 5-10 years to rebuild. It takes 5-10 years to build into a consistent winner year in and year out. People have vastly overinflated the period of time in which it takes to get a program back to a competitive level.
