We're 4-4 right now and on par to win between 5-7 games which is right where every sane person thought we'd end up.

SD St is a win so that's 5 wins.

At Iowa is likely a loss so that's 5 losses.

We have Illinois and Michigan St at home both of which are winnable. If we win both we're 7-5 against one of the toughest schedules in the NCAA and head to our second straight bowl game and Brewster gets at least a 2 year extension and anyone complaining about the season or the extension need their heads examined.

If we split those two games we end 6-6 again against a brutal schedule and we'll be in a bowl game as well and Brewster gets his 2 year extension. There will be criticism but he's earned the right to get his players on the field as upperclassmen.

Only if we can't win either of those two and we end 5-7 does Brewster not get an extension. In that case he plays out his last year of his contract and we go from there.

Now, since we're right where we all thought we'd be we need to understand that Brewster is not going to throw in the towel and play all the kids for the sake of the future as some are already calling for. Sure, we'll see Gray get more snaps but that's been the plan since the get-go and is nothing new.

Bottom line is many people are panicking and talking about firing the coach, throwing in the towel on the whole season when in reality we're right where we thought we'd be. Everyone stay calm, keep your heads in the game and let's support the team and the coaching staff to a bowl game.

Honestly I think SD State will be a tougher game than Illinois. This is the superbowl for SD State, Illinois clearly has quit.

Also, doesn't Brewster have 2 years left on his contract?

SDSU doesn't have the athletes to make it a game even if we don't show. I'd bet Brew starts younger guys with something to prove in that game to avoid a letdown. Illinois may appear to have quit but they should start playing for next year which means they will try to score as much as possible and they do have some very good athletes which will make it tough.

Do you think this will hold up at season end? I'm certain there is a stat out there right now that says we have the ____ toughest schedule in the country, but that is a dynamic stat. In other words, it will adjust as the season goes on and all of the teams on the schedule continue to win and lose. So at season end will we look back and say "wow, that was one tough schedule"? Or will we look back and say "that wasn't as tough as we once thought it was"? I certainly don't know the answer - just asking the question. The good thing is that the question will indeed be answered as we watch the strength-of-schedule stat through year end.

It's the WAY we've lost the last two weeks that has people questioning the coach. Losses were expected. Not even being close to competitive wasn't.

Sagarin currently has our schedule at the 18th toughest in college football, although that may drop with the 4 remaining games we have left. The only B10 team tougher is Iowa, and there's will surely drop with only OSU left as a highly ranked team.

Washington currently has the toughest schedule according to Sagarin, but that's due in large part to the fact that he thinks the Pac-10 is the top conference in football this year, and Washington has already played USC, Oregon, and Arizona.

It's been a tough schedule no doubt.

I am unsure why it was unrealistic to expect improvement from 2008 to 2009. The team that started out 2008 7-1 has never appeared in 2009. We had everyone of consequence coming back this year with the exception of VanDeSteeg, Brock, and Jack Simmons. Simmons was replaced well by Tow-Arnett, but we've missed VanDeSteeg and Brock.

If your scenario unfolds, Brewster will be 0-6 in his tenure against Wisconsin and Iowa which is completely unacceptable by anyones standards.

7-5 is not terrible and I could see a 2 year extension if that happens. An extension at 6-6? That's Mason Era thinking in my opinion. I certainly believe Brewster should stick around if he finishes 6-6, but he's got to bring the goods in 2010.

This seems to be a pretty logical/sane thread so I'm gonna post my question here. If we don't pick up Brew's option and let him go through next year (seems like the most likely scenario), how will it affect our recruiting? With the coaching uncertainty will recruiting the good players get tougher?

I'll give you Ohio State, but we lost to Penn State on the road by 20 points. Michigan lost to Penn State at home by 25 points. We were 1 yard away from losing by 13 points and an additional big play or accurate call from the officials away from being in a 1 score game against PSU.

Obviously, we fell apart in the 3rd quarter against OSU.

I am very curious as to how well Brewster rallies the troops this week.

MSU is a tough team, but are beatable with the right playcalling and execution. We'll see in 6 days.

I'm not ready to throw in the towel on this team yet - I hope they have not given up.

How about the 2008 team that ended the season 0-5?

We've certainly seen that team, but at least in 2008 we had did not have a healthy Decker during that time period.

Great post, however, I think a lot of people on here are upset because Minnesota hasn't even stayed competitive against Penn State and OSU. That's the troubling part. You can measure how far a program has progressed by how well it performs against the best...and against the best, Minnesota has looked the worst.

We went 7-1 by racking up wins against the same teams we've beaten this year. I think you'd be hard pressed to say we've gotten worse this year, we beat Northwestern this time, and Air Force is probably better than any team we beat last year.. Whether we've gotten better is debateable.

You bring up interesting points, but when Minnesota lines up against Penn State and Ohio State, it's a mismatch, plain and simple. Why hire a guy that will keep the program in neutral?

Who is going to make us better than Ohio State and Penn State in three years?

I'll give you a hint: nobody.

What's worse is it's funny to me how sometimes "casual" viewers can notice something about our team that some posters on this board are blind to........

I've seen the idea of people being bothered by the way we were beaten a lot the past couple of days and I've noticed for the most part (Not accusing this poster) the people who say getting steamrolled is unacceptbale are the same ones who said hanging tight with Cal and Wisconsin counted for nothing. To those people I ask which way is it?
